Yikes man. Those reviews have me starting to worry I'm not going to like this thing. I wondered from the beginning if Joaquin was the right fit. Napoleon seems to have had some issues in his romantic life but was also a certified badass who was nearly worshipped by those who served under and alongside him. Guessing most those going to see this are hoping for a lot more of battlefield genius and less romantic failure, but casting Joaquin kind of hints at wanting to emphasize his strange qualities. But, I'll still see it and hope for the best. At worst I'm sure it's a movie where I'll love many scenes and forget the rest.

I'm looking forward to seeing this. Joaquin Phoenix is a weird dude in real life but he is a very good actor. I still love his role in gladiator.

My issue is that he's a weird dude in real life that really can't (or hasn't) played a role of someone not wacko. Which works in a lot of the roles he chooses (Commodus was a legit wacko), but Napoleon was not what British propaganda made him out to be. I'll withhold judgement until I've seen it, but I'm guessing I'm going to love a lot of this but wish it had been cast and written a bit differently.

I really like this guy's channel. My hopes for a great film are a bit dashed after watching his review. I don't know if I'd call it spoilers since it is a historical film, but he does summarize all of the scenes.

I have a question TCTSS
When you link all the various tweets/reviews on a movie release, are these people that you actively follow?
Or just searching for the movie title and just posting all the reviews you see without really knowing who they all are?
Reading all the ones on this thread made me realize I don't really have a reviewer I put stock into since Siskel/Roeper & Ebert stopped really being a thing.
I don't mind going to see a movie and figuring it out for myself, but it's also nice to have some indicator of if a movie is worth going to the theater to see now that I cant just go every week easily, lol.

Ottomans held the balkans in Europe, but quite a bit of North African coastline and middle eastern territory beyond that.

Mongols never really established control in Europe. They basically sent a big scouting expedition that kicked a lot of butt, but every time they seemed to be gearing up to invade, the khan died and a fight for control broke out.

The Hapsburg empire comes to mind as a recent major land empire in Europe. There was a moment when they controlled the Holy Roman Empire *and* Spain, a bunch of other land (south Italy), and Spain's overseas possessions. It was the first empire the sun never set on.

This is the correct answer. Charles V's empire was probably the last large continental European empire (I'm strictly talking about continental Europe, not colonial possessions) before Napoleon.

This has me a bit worried. Apple needs a banger after Killers of the Flower Moon fell flat.

I agree with some of the posters above. Napoleon was petty, but the dude was a military genius and not near the weasel the Brits attempt to make him out to be. Great case study for all the veterans out there. Hoping to see it next week.

Saw the movie last night. I thought it was horrible. Acting was not good at all. They tried to jam in too many events and they did it with no flair or drama. Save your money.

second what you said. I've watched a lot of his stuff. He's entertaining and knowledgeable.

Thanks. I will take my dunce card and sit down.
If you're really interested, I might suggest this two-part series for a quick summary. It's presented in a cartoony way but the history is accurate and there's lots of humor to keep it entertaining and fun. And it really highlights the degree to which he towered over the other powers. Oversimplified has a bunch of really great ones like this. The Punic Wars one is absolutely hysterically funny but also spot on.

Wanted to bring this back up as well.

Oversimplified is a great 30,000' view of wars/conflicts done in an entertaining and funny way. I do an annual watch of all of the videos because of the entertainment value.

I am STILL waiting on the Second Punic Wars video he teased.

Here is a case where I'm actually letting reviews determine whether I'll see a movie. I was really looking forward to this, but the reviews I'm seeing have given me enough pause to not spend the $$ or time on going to the theater. Doesn't sound like Ridley Scott has another Gladiator classic here. I'll just wait for its streaming debut.

Though who knows how any classic/great movie would be 'reviewed' on Twitter if it released into theaters today.
Something to keep in mind.

Before Elon screwed up the verified process, it was way easier to just post all the reactions from "official" critics/journalist/bloggers. Now I have to do a bit more keyword searching, or the "For You" tab will often feed me reactions from people I don't otherwise follow. Either way, I still try to post reactions from all the more trusted usual suspects I know and follow, but it's definitely harder now to know how legit all the other reactions are (not in terms of whether they're telling the truth or not, but in terms of their bonafides).

Reluctantly seeing this tonight, btw. I've warned my parents that reviews aren't great, but my dad is insisting on still seeing it anyway, and my mom is begrudgingly going. No one else in the family will go with us. Will report back.

They didn't really show Napoleon the strategist, he's just kind of boning his wife then all of the sudden there's a battle scene. I really liked this movie though, I thought overall it was entertaining.

I'm surprised you're not more amped for this. I mean come on, it's a new Ridley Scott epic, on the big screen.

I'm not really paying attention to reviews for now.

6:40 pm tonight for me.

It's a minor thing, but all the different accents kind of turn me off. And it's not that I'm not excited otherwise, I think I'd just rather wait on the four-hour cut coming to Apple TV+, since that version seems to be Scott's true intention.

Just saw it and I thought it was very underwhelming…it was a 2 hour and 40 minute autobiography basically. Nothing really awe inspiring about it.
