1. The drones were coming from an Iranian mothership off the coast.
2. The drones were hobby and commercial drones.
3. They are not drones, they are airplanes…

1. I posted a link or two some pages back, about US military brass itching to confront China over the Taiwan Strait using drones to slow their approach. There was a Center for Strategic International Studies conference on drone warfare earlier this year that addressed a gap between US drone technology and Chinese drone technology, outlining a need for the US to catch up.
So, it is a known that the US has an imperative to develop and test new generations of drones in different environments.
2. I think that after some real sightings of drones being tested, and possibly even some spy drones in operation, a social media telephone game kicked off with random yahoos looking for internet likes by pointing their cellphones at the sky and screaming about ordinary airplanes, helicopters and lights in the sky. And amateurs sending up consumer drones trying to get shots.
- The above game makes it easy for authorities to dismiss all sightings as no big deal.
3. Small town politicians love national attention, and are probably genuinely frustrated about not having answers for all the calls they're getting.
4. I'm skeptical of the "car size drone over my backyard" claims. Living in the tranquil paradise of Houston, I see police helicopters, fixed-wings, and occasionally police drones. It's really hard to accurately estimate size of an object in the dark more than 100 feet up.
So, uh...I dunno. But it's possible for more than one explanation to be true at the same time.
This guy videoed them for a couple of hours on his property tonight in MD. Nothing earth shattering, but didn't seem like planes, possibly helicopters though; although it would be a bit odd for there to be several of them loitering around his farm for that long. I watched that video. I will say with 95-99% confidence that is an airplane. With my headphones on and volume turned up, you can very easily hear the propeller sounds.
I cannot guess as to his claim of chasing one, but I live next to a small municipal airport. At night time, when those things are flying around, at certain angles of approach they look stationary for a long time and then are suddenly on top of you.

Meanwhile the White House points to widespread misidentifications by civilians and says "nothing nefarious" to downplay the underlying gravity of a problem Senators on Intel and Armed Services like @marcorubio and @SenGillibrand have been calling out for years.
The stakes are much higher now. Once opened this door doesn't close.
Why has this indifference lasted so long?
