I beg to differ. For instance, last year we took a family trip to Nantucket and the ferry ride was an hour from Hyannis, MA. There was a significant chunk of that ride where we could hardly see land in any direction, and it absolutely felt like being "in the middle of the ocean."
Feeling like being in the middle of the ocean & actually being in the middle of the ocean are two different things.
The former means you are not terribly far from land, and thus drones, lanterns, other ships, etc.
Random lights in the sky shown for a few seconds on a shaky phone camera doesn't mean much.

Be that as it may, I just looked it up and there are multiple, multi-day ferry rides across the globe. I'm seeing ferry rides ranging from a few hours to three days.

Just FYI, it's not an official Apple TV release. Fox simply linked to their platform, where it will be available for purchase, same as on Amazon, Google, Roku, etc.
