To give people an idea about the guy Zava is based on, here are some real-life quotes and stories from Zlatan Ibrahimovic:
  • "Who is most deserving of all the money that I, Zlatan, am paid? The answer is Zlatan."
  • "I can't help but laugh at how perfect I am."
  • "One thing is for sure: a World Cup without me is nothing to watch."
  • "Nothing, she already has Zlatan." [when asked what he got his wife for Valentine's Day]
  • "I heard the crowd chanting 'We want Zlatan' so I gave them Zlatan." [after scoring two goals in his LA Galaxy debut]
  • "Now LA has a God and a King!" [when Lebron James announced he was going to the Lakers]
  • "Dear Los Angeles, You're welcome. -Zlatan" [a full-page ad in the LA Times when he moved to Los Angeles]
  • Lebron James very famously sent Zlatan one of his Lakers jerseys, as a show of respect. Zlatan signed it and sent it back to him.

That last one is maybe my favorite ever!

One of my favs of his:

"First I went left; he did too. Then I went right and he did too. Then I went left again and he went to buy a hot dog."

More recently, at age 40 last year and still playing at a high level for AC Milan, he said the following about retirement:

"I want to play as long as I can. The reality is I'll play until I see that someone is better than me, so I'm still playing."

"I think the greatest sadness will be yours, as you won't get to watch me play anymore. You should enjoy it now, because you'll never see the likes of me again."

When he moved to Paris to play for PSG:

"We are looking for an apartment. But if we don't find anything, then I'll probably buy the hotel."

Editing my post above to respond to this part, because this one really is peak Zlatan in full-context. Bond-villain level ego. It's incredible.

While Zlatan played for Paris, David Beckham announced he was donating his salary to a children's charity, to which Zlatan humbly responded…

"Who is most deserving of all of the money that I, Zlatan, am paid? The answer is Zlatan. The children of Paris are not leading Ligue 1 in goals this season. I am. I have 20 goals. The next best players have 12. Twelve! If anything, the children of Paris should be giving me even more money for having the privilege of being in the same city as my incredible quality. And so should David Beckham. Call it a Zlaritable donation."

My favorite Zlatan story(fromthis article, which is full of gems https://theathletic.com/2607878/2021/05/25/zlatan-ibrahimovic-galaxy-mls/?source=user_shared_article):

Quote:

In early May of 2018, the Galaxy were facing off against the Houston Dynamo on the road. As Pontius tells it, LA looked gutless in the game's early goings and, at halftime, Zlatan made his frustrations known.

"We need more guys to get stuck in on tackles," Ibrahimovic bellowed. "Like Kevin."

Ibrahimovic's teammates were intimidated by the giant, ferocious Swede, who was prowling around the locker room, unloading on each and every one of them. But mostly they were confused. You see, there was no Kevin on the team. Zlatan, at this point, had been with them for weeks.

"Finally someone musters up the courage to ask him," says Pontius, "who is Kevin?"

Ibrahimovic motioned toward defensive midfielder Perry Kitchen, who was seated at his locker. "Him," said Ibrahimovic. "Kevin."

Like any good mythology, the Kevin story has different versions. We're first introduced to Kevin by Toronto FC defender Eriq Zavaleta.

The game (in 2019) that we won 5-3 where Zlatan scored his 500th (career) goal I heard Zlatan screaming at his teammates," Zavaleta says. "He was yelling, 'KEVIN! KEVIN! PLAY FORWARD.' Perry Kitchen had the ball at that point so I thought to myself, 'Who the hell is Kevin?' There was no Kevin on that team, to my knowledge."

"Chris is wrong," Kitchen says. "That was a different time. The Kevin thing started immediately."

The day after the Galaxy's stunning, come-from-behind 4-3 victory over LAFC a game in which Zlatan scored arguably the most memorable goal in MLS history within his first 36 hours of arriving in the United States Schmid gathered his team for a post-game tape session. While going through the film, the veteran MLS coach asked his charges if they had any observations.

"Zlatan spoke up and said something along the lines of: 'In games like these we need to have more bite, we need to be nastier. Like Kevin,'" says Kevin Kitchen. "And he pointed to me, over in my direction. I was like, looking around, to my left, to my right, making sure there wasn't a Kevin on the team. I said, 'Are you pointing to me? My name is Perry. It's right above my locker.'"

"Yes," replied Ibrahimovic. "You are Kevin."

"The guy was so confident that he stood there and just tried to tell me I didn't know my own name, man."

"He called Perry 'Kevin' every day for the next year and a half," Pontius says, still laughing. "I swear, to this very day, if he saw Perry again he would just say, 'What's up, Kevin?'"

Does Ted seem too deferential of Zava? His characterization seemed a touch off to me. Otherwise I thought it was a great episode. Thought it was a nice twist that Zava is actually a good teammate, even if he's a self centered individual.

Nothing to do with Ted Lasso but I know someone that this happened to. In a slightly more twisted aspect of it, the guy providing the "counseling" was the couple's preacher. The preacher/counselor began having an affair with the wife between couple's counseling sessions.

Let's just say the marriage didn't last.

no doubt, and that's a pretty smart/interesting wrinkle.

given that Ted has hooked up with Sassy a few times, it would be hypocritical for Ted to be upset that Michelle is just seeing someone. but to have it be their marriage counselor, who Ted previously expressed frustration/distrust toward to Dr. Sharon and basically caused him to reject therapy completely, could really send Ted on a spiral.

I wasn't crazy about the episode, but I liked it ok. Seemed like a necessary transition episode to really set up the Jamie vs Zava dynamic going forward.

I do agree that they're doing am interesting thing with Zava being self-centered but still apparently a decent guy. I'm sure there's a flip coming on that somehow

Rewatched episode 2 to prep for tonight. Zlatan's press conference at Chelsea was great because he chose Richmond but also because, after he asked the Chelsea guy if he could keep the pen, he shook the Chelsea guy's hand and posed for pictures, having successfully acquired a pen.
And the Chelsea guy mouthing "What the ****?" put a nice bow on that scene.

The Zava storyline seems a bit unnecessary. We've already had such a plot line in the first season with Jamie being the cocky superstar that creates turmoil in the ranks.

Granted, I'm under the impression that Zava will be Zava throughout his story arc with Ted failing at bringing him around using the "methods" that worked so effectively on Jamie, Roy, etc. This is a variation to the Jamie story but one that seems somewhat lazy as it's been done already.

I think Ted is going to have to deal with his good ol' boy coaching style not working on someone as transcendent as Zlatan and it'll eventually push Jamie away. All of the Me First stuff that Zlatan does simply doesn't appear to matter because they're winning, which means Ted is losing himself again. Jamie or Zlatan will end up at West Ham soon.

I always look for clutter to mean lack of peace in the show. Collin waking up in a cluttered room but it being clean by the time he got dressed played with that trope that the show has created.

I could see this going more in the direction of Rebecca vs. Ted.

In Ep1 she already confronted Ted about everyone laughing at Richmond and how she needed him to 'fight'. While the Zava thing was about her showing up Rupert, I think it's also Rebecca trying to help the club win as she doubts that Ted is doing enough.

Rebecca wants Zava on the team to win, but Ted and the team have a difficult time dealing with Zava - so the team continues to struggle.

Zava eventually leaves, Rebecca gets more upset with Ted, and Ted has to get the team to come together and win as a unit...which in the end wins Rebecca back over. Maybe Rupert ends up with Zava...only to lose everything.

Maybe that's it, Zava goes to West Ham and exposes Nate for being so cruel, which causes Nate to explode and finally get his comeuppance, after which Ted brings him back and AFC Richmond take on West Ham in one final match, led by Roy-trained Jamie Tartt, letting Ted and Beard walk away on top, going back to football in the States and handing the keys to Roy.

Once Trent was fired from the paper I envisioned him being hired by Richmond to handle their PR department. Trent is too valuable a character to just send off into the sunset after he was canned. Embedding him as a reporter writing a book makes a lot more sense and presents more possibilities for interesting story lines.

Finally watched the final 5 minutes of this episode which, for me, had one point that did not ring very true.

A closeted professional footballer who, in the first scene, was seen to be quite nervous at merely leaving the house of his BF is now so comfortable that he is seen making out with said BF in an alley a few feet away from where his entire team is partying. Also, that he even invited him to the party in the first place was a bit of a stretch. No way he'd invite a guy who, while not flaming, isn't exactly fooling anyone.

As a former closet case myself I have a hard time buying Collin, given his situation, being that bold.

I don't see this as a repeat of the Jamie storyline, I see it as the culmination of Jamie's redemption arc. I am very happy to see Jamie and Roy on the road to full reconciliation and Jamie finally get the father figure he needs. It seems Jamie will become the dominant player who is selfless and carries Richmond as the leader when Zava either gets hurt or leaves the team.

My guess is this was a feel good episode for Zava but the road will become rocky and he will get benched/canned/loaned out because he starts destroying team chemistry. We saw a little glimpse of that when he made the avocado remark to Sam and him stealing Jamie's brilliant goal by tapping it in. This is the honeymoon phase of his time on Richmond through 5 games, now it will get interesting. No way they win the whole F'ing thing just by hiring a mercenary to carry them. They will win it based on Ted creating a highly motivated and cohesive team that is better than its individual parts.

Don't forget these Zlatan quotes about Covid back in 2020.
