If you didn't read it in the link you should read the letter the texas student body vp wrote about the experience.
I did read it. Thanks for sharing that link.
Since they were still taking Stack apart that night, I had no idea there was any memorial service going on.

I'm aware that my music tastes don't match most on this board, but I very much love a song that I can empathize with even if I haven't experienced what the lyrics are describing.

Brand New - Limousine

La Dispute - King Park

La Dispute - Edward Benz, 27 Times

Manchester Orchestra - I Can Feel a Hot One

Manchester Orchestra - The Silence

Yeah Limousine is right up there knowing the backstory. Absolute gut punch of a song.

Being from the Tyler area, any song that references Timeout just makes me laugh. Can't take it seriously

Two Pearl Jam songs on this list and neither of them are even Pearl Jam's saddest song. That would be "Release".

Robert Cray has a bunch of gut punch songs. The first three tracks of "Strong Persuader" are a blues haymaker of regret and despair. "Don't Break This Ring" from "Shame + A Sin" kills me everytime. The soul searing anguish in "I Can't Go Home" as Bob sings "a friend told me that my girl is calling some other man daddy" would make most men curl up in the fetal position, or, in Bob's case, inspire fantasies of murder.

But "Sonny" from "False Accusations" may be the biggest gut punch of them all. Young Bob, what the hell did you do?

Sonny was my best friend
He went away to Vietnam

Said, "Watch out for my wife and baby"
"And I'll count on you when I'm gone."

For a guy with three young daughters, this song makes me tear up every time.

You are correct. Thanks. I was in 8th grade in 99

Indeed. It hits so hard. Limousine is their magnum opus IMO.

The ending lyrics though.

We'll never have to buy adjacent plots of earth
We'll never have to rot together underneath the dirt
I'll never have to lose my baby in the crowd
I should be laughing right now

We all know my love of Jason Isbell, so 25% of his catalogue?

Also, this song is so sweet it hurts

I listened to this with my niece after my father's funeral.

If you think I am a liberal, you are incorrect. Assume sarcasm on my part. Sorry if something I post has already been posted. Just the way it is!!

Now that I have kids, "That's My Job" by Conway always brings a tear to my eye.

This.

That song made me tear up way before I had kids. Now that I do, I can't even make it to the end.

Recently it's Lances Song by Zach Brown Band.

My uncle was like a big brother to me and my favorite relative not named Mom or Dad. He was an incredible piano player that played every week for his church, tons of weddings, events, etc. He could hear a song and work it out on the piano in a matter of minutes or hours. Growing up I was always on one of his knees while his hands danced up and down the keys on either side of me. He died a couple of years ago at a relatively young age after a sudden unexpected health issue. I've got sentimental favorites that he played a lot for me as a kid that aren't sad songs yet still bring me to tears but lately when I hear Lances Song it changes from the drummer that dies in the song to my uncle the piano player. Rocks me every time…but I love it and the visual it provides.

Miranda Lambert - The House that Built Me

"And I bet you didn't know under that live oak
My favorite dog is buried in the yard."
Gets me every time...

"Cowgirls Don't Cry" by B&D w/Reba took on new meaning when I had my daughter. When Reba comes in, it always gets me thinking too much about leaving my daughter "alone" in the world, which kills me.

Quote:

If we were vampires and death was a joke
We'd go out on the sidewalk and smoke
And laugh at all the lovers and their plans
I wouldn't feel the need to hold your hand
Maybe time running out is a gift
I'll work hard 'til the end of my shift
And give you every second I can find
And hope it isn't me who's left behind

Dondante by My Morning Jacket
About Jim's childhood friend that committed suicide.

"You had me worried, so worried, that this would last. But now i'm learning, learning, that this will pass"

There are two ways to interpret Lucy by Skillet, but the singer's voice carries the emotion.

These two were mine when I was single again after my divorce. Not so much now that I'm happily remarried.

This one when I was feeling lonely and sorry for myself.

I just finished listening to his debut album. I got it on 180g vinyl for Christmas. So good.

Three songs that evoke a visceral reaction from my body. I don't even have to think about it my body just reacts.

The first two have a similar theme of growing up and trying to hold on/say goodbye to youth theme that really gets me. The third is more a mental health/depression/anxiety song that gut punches me.

Don't even know if my old man liked this song, but for some reason it's always reminded me of him. We were hiking Philmont in 1997 and some staff guy with a guitar played it one night and for some reason always stuck with me.

Played this song at my grandfathers funeral. He was a cowboy until the day he died at 78. He died when I was in 3rd grade and I still miss him.

Amazing Grace on bagpipes. Wayyy too many funerals and memorial services. I'll never listen to it again. I love the hymn Amazing Grace and no issues singing at church though

When it was played at the Bonfire memorial service at FBC Houston, it absolutely wrecked me.

If you listen to a lot of Post Malone's lyrics, especially on his last album, it's full of his internal battle with depression and substance abuse.

Someone really close to me struggles with depression...and this song gets me everytime i hear it:

Another one by Post that really makes me sad for him:
