So this is pretty interesting (and potentially extremely confusing for audiences), as this news can be read one of two ways...

1) Either a standalone Clayface DCU movie is now official, and separately, what would be a different iteration of Clayface is ALSO now heavily rumored to be the/a villain in The Batman Part II...

... or, more likely...

2) A standalone Clayface movie has just been officially announced as part of Matt Reeves' The Batman Saga, set to start shooting "early next year," a movie that will serve as an introduction to/origin story for Clayface, who will also then appear as the/a villain in The Batman Part II. In other words, Clayface releasing in the first of half 2026, with The Batman Part II releasing in the second half (October 2, to be exact).

Again, I think it's almost assuredly the latter, considering Matt Reeves is producing the Clayface standalone movie, but the wording in these articles is not clear at all...

A few more credible rumors, based on the above...

- Jonathan Crane/Scarecrow apparently works at Arkham, where...

- The Joker still resides "for a majority of the film."

- Clayface will apparently be a somewhat separate plot line, as in he's not directly working with Scarecrow.

- Clayface will apparently be the "Matt Hagen" iteration, and Reeves is going for a more realistic, Darkman vibe with the character.

Again, take all of this with a grain salt, but it's from Dan Marcus above, who's a credible presence on Film Twitter, lives in LA//works in the industry, and isn't some DC fanboy account or anything like that.

Big picture for The Batman Part II, it's increasingly sounding like...

- The Penguin will be running the criminal underworld, with obvious political aspirations.

- Scarecrow will be working at/potentially running Arkham, interacting with the Joker, where the Riddler and Sofia Falcone could also come into play.

- As possibly the primary villain, Clayface will likely have his own agenda/beef with Batman.

- And Catwoman will almost assuredly be back, perhaps teaming with Sofia in some way.

How any of this relates to the Court of Owls, which is also heavily rumored, I have no idea. Maybe Clayface/Matt Hagen serves as some kind of connection there?

Matt Hagen Clayface is interesting, as that's the Animated Series version. Going to be really curious to see how they do this as the shapeshifting, mud-monster version - definitely seemed like a stretch for this universe. The Darkman comparison is always what I envisioned when I heard the rumblings.

Hard to imagine Clayface as the true big bad - even though I think he's a great, tragic villain. And although it's a fairly common comic gimmick (shapeshifter) - it will be cool to see one of Batman's villains that we've never seen on the big screen before. I wonder if they were just dead-set on going with a character that's never been in a film.

Welp... it's now official.

Clayface is apparently a DCU movie, NOT a Reeves Bat-verse movie.

Even though Reeves is somehow producing the Clayface movie, which makes zero sense.

Not only that, but Clayface is set for September 11, 2026... less than a month before The Batman Part II is set to release (on October 2).

Which, unfortunately, almost assuredly means The Batman Part II is moving to March 2027.

UNLESS...

Gunn is using "DCU" to simply mean that Clayface is a "DC" movie, one that could still technically take place in the Reeves Bat-verse. In that case, if Clayface and The Batman Part II ARE connected, their respective current release dates would make sense, releasing within a month of each other, the former setting up the latter.

Which could be really cool.

Which means it probably won't happen.

I love James Gunn, I really do... but good lord each and every one of these announcements are so damn confusing...

Get your stories straight, people.

It's just not that hard to communicate this **** clearly...

Clayface before Batman shows up in the DCU is certainly a bold choice.

Starting to think Gunn's DCU is going to be just as disorganized as the previous plan

Also really thought they'd prioritize getting The Batman movies out and done so the DCU Batman can shine on his own

Yeah, now I'm definitely afraid that March 2027 date is being reserved for The Batman Part II...

From a corporate standpoint this would absolutely make the most sense. And in theory, I'm not opposed to Gunn and Reeves basically co-running the DCU creatively. But more than anything I want Reeves' Bat-verse to remain its own thing so that we can see his vision through without getting bogged down by all the goofy/supernatural stuff from the DCU. I'm not at all opposed to goofy/supernatural in general, and am absolutely looking forward to the DCU in that regard. I just don't want any of it mixed in with what Reeves has already established. Keep them separate!

This made me realize why I didn't like Creature Commandos.....Reeves DC universe (so far) is the superior product vs Gunn's universe until such time that Superman is released which will be the defining moment for Gunn's version. I just finished watching The Batman and Penguin in recent weeks so I think seeing Creature Commandos was jarring.

In my mind, Reeves has put out such a good product that it has established itself as the rightful alpha arc in DC (right or wrong). Both universes can exist I guess, but Gunn actually has big shoes to fill at this point with what Reeves has put out. And CC was a bit of a half-assed first entry by Gunn, IMO. I get that it's a cartoon, but still....

I love this basic idea...

Quote:

Matt Reeves reveals more details about The Batman Part II:

"There's a lot of unrest and there's a lot of clamouring because of the revelations of what we find out at the end of the [first] movie," he teased. "There's unrest in the streets to say, 'Well, how could this be?' The idea that this corruption extends as deep as it extends.

"In the first movie, Batman views things very simplistically, he sees things in black and white. What he can represent and how he can affect that."

"As we enter into the next movie, there's a lot more grey," Reeves continued. "There's a lot more people at odds. There's a lot more division in the city. It's a lot more like our world is now, there's a lot of turmoil because people are in their camps and they're not communicating.

"How does Batman fit into that? Where do you fit? It's not as clear as going, 'Oh yeah, bad guy, I go after bad guys'.

"And when things are in grey, it makes it very hard to be Batman, so this is part of the challenge as we enter it."

That could be potentially Court of Owls esque.

But I'm just generally confused after the last 10 or so posts.

Semi related, if anyone is up for some really interesting Batman storytelling in the meantime the new Absolute Batman comic is outstanding.

Written by Scott Snyder (who wrote the Court of Owls storyline), it's a kind of alt origin story for Bruce Wayne that I'm absolutely loving so far.

Don't understand this. Is the script not finished? Why would this get bumped for a random untitled Tom Cruise movie?

To put it in even more insane context, Christopher Nolan will have shot and released Oppenheimer, then written, shot, and released The Odyssey between when The Batman and The Batman: Part II hit theaters. Hell, The Odyssey will have been released a year-and-a-half before The Batman: Part II hits theaters. It's just so nuts, and not at all sustainable for a franchise. No one is going to give a **** by then.
