Following the shocking revelations in the Confessional thread there was talk about having a movie of the week thread to organize watching and discussing "must watch" movies.

A good place to start would be the AFI top 100, but let's not be constrained by the list. We can vote on the weekly movie (it may trend to fortnightly).

I'm definitely in on this. Don't know if the best way is to vote or you just make a pick to save time. I fear if it is too complicated people will flake.

Maybe a random number generator could determine it?

We can do a google form where you select 10 movies from the list and we go from there. We also could do random number if that doesn't get enough traction.

My vote is Chinatown because I saw that a few months ago and loved it.

Select 10 of the top 100 from AFI's list and then add any at the bottom.

What's the logistics of this thing?
Announce a movie on a Monday? Give everyone a week to see it? Announce the next movie on a Monday and spoiler discussion of the previous movie can start?

Avoid spoilers for the future movie regardless of how old it is, the point of this is movies you haven't seen.

Who makes the official announcement? Always powerbelly?

I think announce Monday and start a new thread for it. Start spoiler discussions the following Monday.

Maybe do a movie every two weeks.

I am happy to start the new threads as we go.

Maybe alternate classic AFI list movies and more pop classic movies.

For example, one week would be Chinatown and the next week would be Big Trouble in Little China.

I like that idea.

1. Texags watches the movie.
2. Texags ranks the movie
3. TCTTS puts the rankings up on his website.
4. Texags rankings overtake IMDB and rotten tomatoes
5. TCTTS is revealed as Barnes
6. Listeater is forced to take him out
7. Apple TV does a biopic about it.
8. Texags gets mad when they make listeater black.

2 things

1. Just from a practical perspective, a movie is more likely to be watched if it's on a main streaming service.

2. Isn't this thread the concept for the Bill Simmons podcast The Rewatchables?

Vote 10 times

I voted twice because I could not get it down to ten. Heck it was tough for me to only vote for 20.

To be clear, we will keep going as we watch movies. The top 10 is just a way to prioritize where we start.

I haven't done an inventory or anything, but HBO Max has a Turner Classic Movies selection that should help with the older ones. I've also found some on Prime. Hopefully we don't run into any that aren't on anything

Also like to mention that since the list is from the updated AFI list, here are the ones that were removed when they did the rework 10 years after the original. Some classics in there as well that some might want to add to their write in votes:

Off the top of my head, Lawrence of Arabia is not on free streaming. We can work around that when needed.

I understood that but with my first vote I tried to pick films from a variety of different genres, eras and directors and then regretted I did not vote for some movies I enjoyed more than the my first submission.

And from the old AFI list I also want to vote for:
The Third Man
Stagecoach
Close Encounters of the Third Kind

Vored.

One suggestion is I think requiring 10 movies might complicate things and make it more complex than necessary.

An alternate suggestion is maybe going through all the letters of the alphabet and choosing a movie per letter each week. That would narrow things way down each week.

We're gonna end up discussing Star Wars, so basically nothing new for this board.

If we do, we should watch The Searchers, The Hidden Fortress, and Flash Gordon first so we can discuss how they inspired star wars.

People should be voting for a movie they haven't seen, since the idea isn't to push your favorite movie but to expand your experience. At least, starting out.
