Yep. Trailer was ****ing amazing. Movies were meh to terrible. Really should have been cut to two, but I believe Warner Brothers wanted 3. Superfluous love story to shoehorn in a fabricated female character was also a horrible decision. So much disappointment after LOTR.
I have the theory that PJ just really wanted to film the Golumn / Bilbo scene and the Bilbo / Smaug scene and decided he needed to build movies around them.
It's funny, but I think WB was ultimately the real problem. It was originally supposed to be two films, then WB announced 3. It also had to be on their release schedule and had less preproduction time than LOTR to meet desired release dates. It's almost they looked at it and said, 'There's a lot less story here, so you should be able to do it faster and cheaper. Oh, but we still want 3 movies again to milk the box office, too. Kthxbye."
Wasn't Guillermo del Toro supposed to direct them and then dropped out? I can't remember my kids were born around then and we had all sorts of complications. I do remember reading the article saying instead of making all the actual props and creatures, it was going to be CGI and feeling like that was a real misstep.
I really enjoyed the Rings of Power, going in with no expectations and not sweating what might be in the Simarillon, etc. I have a daughter who likes sci-fi stuff (loves Strangers Things, now watching Lost with me) and it's a great show for her to puzzle out what's going on and just have a fun Friday night with her dad.
