But then again this is Amazon, lotr is the one only card they have in the stream wars
I think you're forgetting a little something called "Wheel of Time".

Which is fair, because so did the audience.

Quick tangent: I've been reading the Wheel of Time books since 1994 when my cousin gave me a battered paperback of "The Eye of the Word".

Let's just say I've laid down any expectations and pride whatsoever and am at serene peace(coping) with whatever they're making. At least some places like the Ways, Two Rivers, Shadar Logoth was cool.

One thing I wondered in regards to the streaming numbers and people finishing...

Are people more likely to finish a series of it's all dumped at once to binge? I bet this show would have been more successful as a binge.

That would require data most people aren't privy to, but I'm going to say it probably doesn't matter. Anecdotally, I've stopped watching both bingable and weekly release shows in about equal numbers. From a slightly more scientific perspective, HotD's finale drew 9.3 million viewers, down only slightly from the premier's 10 million despite being a weekly release. Very similar backgrounds between the shows including release format, yet still very different outcomes.

Had a spell of insomnia and decided to give this another go as I forgot the story. Got through the Galadriel intro and then it went to the Harfoots… and I just got pissed and turned it off.

Do we just bump this thread or start a new one? I just realized S2 is upon us... sure wish Strangers Things got released at a similar pace.

S2 is Aug 29.

Why am I not excited for this? I'm hoping they make the necessary changes to redeem the garbage that was Season 1. But I'm not holding out hope. Especially since I feel one of the issues with the first season is the casting which clearly can't change. Some of the characters are down right cringe.

How would you rank the IP in the universe? Here's mine:

-The Hobbit (Book) - The GOAT
-LOTR (Movie Trilogy) tied w/ LOTR (Book Trilogy) - Both were so amazing. The movies felt like they were an extension of the books.

-Silmarillion - mad respect for Tolkien's world building skills. But I did not enjoy reading it at all.
-Rings of Power - I enjoy parts of this, more than the Silmarillion, but hard to put it above the Silmarillion with some of the creative decisions made

-The Hobbit (Movie Trilogy) - Did not capture the essence of the books for me.

I hope this thread continues the narrative of the first season's "I ****ing hate this, it's stupid, but I'm going to keep watching it so I can voice my complaints".

I think the first one is in the Hall of Fame for best trailer / worst movie. Having the dwarves sing the Misty Mountains song was so on point for book fans.

There is one great movie in those 3 movies if you pare them down, or even 2 decent movies, but the bloat just ruins it.

I will say those 3 were a good starter set for my daughter to get interested in Middle Earth. We watched those 3 when she was 9 or so, and then LOTR when she was 10 and it was a lot better experience.

Yep. Trailer was ****ing amazing. Movies were meh to terrible. Really should have been cut to two, but I believe Warner Brothers wanted 3. Superfluous love story to shoehorn in a fabricated female character was also a horrible decision. So much disappointment after LOTR.

They'd probably be at the bottom of the list, but as a kid I always liked the Rankin/Bass animated adaptations of The Hobbit and The Return of the King.

Are there any Hobbit supercuts out there in the ether where someone has turned it into a 4 or 5 hour epic that's fun and good?

I have the theory that PJ just really wanted to film the Golumn / Bilbo scene and the Bilbo / Smaug scene and decided he needed to build movies around them.

What's weird for me is that the shortcomings in this show don't really bother me as much as the ones in House of the Dragon.

I still mostly liked this show. Maybe it's because it's a little sillier than HotD.

It's funny, but I think WB was ultimately the real problem. It was originally supposed to be two films, then WB announced 3. It also had to be on their release schedule and had less preproduction time than LOTR to meet desired release dates. It's almost they looked at it and said, 'There's a lot less story here, so you should be able to do it faster and cheaper. Oh, but we still want 3 movies again to milk the box office, too. Kthxbye."

Wasn't Guillermo del Toro supposed to direct them and then dropped out? I can't remember my kids were born around then and we had all sorts of complications. I do remember reading the article saying instead of making all the actual props and creatures, it was going to be CGI and feeling like that was a real misstep.

I really enjoyed the Rings of Power, going in with no expectations and not sweating what might be in the Simarillon, etc. I have a daughter who likes sci-fi stuff (loves Strangers Things, now watching Lost with me) and it's a great show for her to puzzle out what's going on and just have a fun Friday night with her dad.

I gave this a 2nd try in a flight up and back to Boston and got hooked. Overall enjoyed it and pretty good ending. Looking forward to Halbard coming into power as Sauron.

I vaguely recall something like that, but it's been a long time. I do remember WB put their fingers in the pie quite a bit though. I think the CGI was because of the more compressed production schedule though.

I'm going to have to do a rewatch of season 1 before the new season drops. I remember liking the first solely because I dove head first into researching Tolkien and Middle Earth lore while watching. Was seriously blown away by his world building.

Yes there are. I downloaded one several years back where someone condensed it and did some slight editing to the movie to make it basically adhere to the book. It was a much better movie, though I still don't like the look of it.

I remember there was a name for the edit, but I can't remember it.

Kind of a cut rate Morgoth. It's like looking forward to Medvedev finally coming into power.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morgoth

Even Sauron's machinations are derivative.

Quote:

. . . He pretends humility and virtue, but secretly plots harm toward the Elves, whose awakening he blames for his defeat. The Noldor, most skilled of the three kindreds of Elves that had come to Valinor, are most vulnerable to his plots, since they are eager for his knowledge. While instructing them, he awakens unrest and discontent among them. When the Valar become aware of this, they send Tulkas to arrest him, but Melkor has already fled.. . .

I guess if Morgoth liked it he should have put a ring on it.

My unfortunate post aside I enjoyed the show too.

Show starts tomorrow. I guess I'm the minority when I say I really enjoyed the 1st season and I'm pumped to get back to Middle Earth! IGN already delivered their review.

I wouldn't say I "really enjoyed" the first season. I thought it was fine, but I do get the critiques. I will be watching season 2 but it's not on my list of shows to get excited for.

Maybe we'll be able to watch the show this time without twenty posts dedicated to demanding an explanation for the skin color of a black character. Was his mom from Harad? Unless a satisfactory answer is provided to me this fantasy IP is ruined.
