Enjoyed that.

I was glad for the Sauron fake-out, even if predictable, if only because of the way they did it with The Stranger would've been super anticlimactic.

Some cool nods to the trilogy, with Sauron saying the same words Galadriel would later repeat to Frodo when he tempts her with the ring, and The Stranger saying Gandalf's line of always following your nose.

Also that final shot of the three rings is identical to the one in the prologue of FOTR.

Overall this was pretty much just a wrap-up of the season, and I know there'll be complaints about it being slow and not much happening, but I thought it was cool seeing this Tolkien lore come to life.

Still have no clue what they're doing with Isildur, hopefully it's not something like he's been trapped under a pile of rubble all this time.

Also, anyone notice we have two pretty much identical scenes in HotD and RoP in back to back episodes? (A dying king confusing someone for their daughter and revealing secrets to them.)

I think it was a solid finale and setup for S2.
They have built enough trust with me that I think they will handle it fine.

I am excited to see where they go in season 2 with Sauron forging and distributing the rings for the dwarves and men.

Although that may not even happen next season.

After the Southlands to Mordor text transition last week I was worried one of the characters was going to be wearing a "Hello my name is Sauron" badge.

Jokes aside, I thought it was a pretty good finale. Both reveals weren't exactly surprising but I thought they were well handled.

I'm excited for season 2 and think overall season 1 was pretty solid

Worst case scenario S2 cold opens to Isildur in the depths, fighting and running from Durin's Bane

So what does the stranger being Istar mean?

He's just "A" wizard...? Or the first wizard?

Seems like those blokes in Ruhn know a little magic...

His is one of the Istari, almost certainly Gandalf but could be one of the other wizards (Saruman, Radagast, one of the Blue Wizards)

Istar is the singular form.

That's some serious RetCon if he ends up being Gandlaf.

That'd make him about 6,000 years old at the start of LOTR.

I thought the "follow your noise" line confirms it's Gandalf. It looks like a younger version of him and the delivery of his lines are very "Gandalf-y."

That is one of the lore inconsistencies. Traditionally he is thought to have been sent to middle earth around 1000 TA and had been in middle earth around 2000 years by the LOTR books.

He is thought to have come to middle earth in the third age, but there is one line from Tolkein about him walking among the elves unknown in the second age that this show seems to be running with.

Quote:

". . . though he loved the Elves, he walked among them unseen, or in form as one of them, and they did not know whence came the fair visions or the promptings of wisdom that he put into their hearts. In later days he was the friend of all the Children of Ilvatar, and took pity on their sorrows; and those who listened to him awoke from despair and put away the imaginations of darkness.

Well, all the evidence for Halbrand ended up not being misdirection. I don't love it, but don't hate it, either...I guess. Probably the only complaint is the rushed feeling.

Anyone else think Celebrimbor came across as pretty dumb for not thinking about alloys?

I can't wait for next season when Sauron walks in to Adar and says "honey, I'm home!"

All in all, I don't love everything about the path the show took, but I enjoyed it.

For a lot of the episode I thought that Halbrand and The Stranger were both "parts" of Sauron.

And I had the "Horcrux" thought, as was previously discussed in this thread.

As a whole the Elves have just been dumb. I guess the writers needed them to be idiots for the plot to move forward. Everything bad that happens leading up to the Lord of the Rings is basically because the Elves are incredibly stupid.

Nah he's gotta be a Blue Wizard. The Gandalf dialogue was just a nod, imo.

His ability to control fire also points to gandalf. I just don't think we will get blue wizards

I could see him dying at the end of the series, and maybe we see his powers transfer over to Gandalf, and see him arrive in ME. (Like Gandalf the White gaining the powers from Saruman.)

They're not going to waste a main character on a wizard that doesn't appear in the films or books in any significant way. The cultists did not refer to him as "another" when they realized it wasn't Sauron, but "the other". They're setting up the stranger as the foil to Sauron, so it has to be Gandalf.

Or I'd be very shocked if it were anyone else.

The showrunners haven't been as tricky as everyone expected with the Sauron reveal, so I'm just going to go with the obvious and assume it's Gandalf.

I wonder if it's gonna be one season dedicated to each stanza of the poem.

S1: Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,
S2: Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone,
S3: Nine for Mortal Men, doomed to die,
S4: One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne

They've said it's five seasons, right? If so, is there material that could come after S4 in this scenario?

S5 in that scenario might be the formation of The Last Alliance, the siege of Barad-dur, and the defeat of Sauron via Isildur cutting off the Ring from Sauron's hand. An "epilogue" could show Isildur being ambushed by orcs and the Ring falling into the Anduin River.

I think Meteor Man is going to be Gandalf, but I ALSO think we get Blue Wizards. I'm going to need one of you guys that are far more versed than me to check me, wasn't one of the popular theories that one (or both) of the Blue Wizards went waaaay east, like, to Rhun? I'm kinda wondering if they didn't just decide to set that up, Gandalf needs help remembering who he is (I'm not going to comment on what I think of this, btw), and so he goes and trains with the Blue Wizards in Rhun. I think this is supported by the fact that the cultists know of the Istari. Traditionally the blues are said to have come first, so it makes sense.

Alternatively, and maybe I'm way out in the weeds here, but didn't Saruman travel way east, too? Like, I think that's actually part of canon, right? So maybe we're all saying the wrong wizard?

Incidentally, I thought it was a pretty good finale, but I feel that the ring forging happened way too dang quick (and did Celebrimbor kinda dirty...he knows what an alloy is, guys...)

The only problem with your theory, Brian, is that it doesn't have anything for Harfoots. Everyone knows they are the key to everything and the best part of this series.

Because I have no idea who they are in-universe, every time there's a post mentioning the "cultist," I keep thinking for a split second you guys are talking about the book purists who get pissed when the story deviates in any way from the canon/lore.

Fantastic.
