I know I'm a broken freaking record, but this episode is really another example of why relying on characters that are very well known wasn't a great idea. No one, and I mean NO ONE, is buying that Isildur is dead. There's no tension there. Furthermore, pretty much everyone is aware of the fact that Celeborn is alive and well in the third age, so again, this whole "I never saw him again" is kinda pointless when everyone is basically saying "uh huh, so we can expect to see him at some point in the future". In contrast to that, Isildur's buddy dying? Nobody saw that coming (yet, anyway), and I honestly have no idea if Bronwyn or Arondir live to the end. There is tension there.

I'd say I'm a pretty "average" audience member, having only seen the first three movies, and literally the only character I know from the original trilogy is Galadriel. Oh, and I guess Elrond is Agent Smith, right? Either way, I have absolutely no idea who Isildur and Celeborn are in the OT, or that they were even in the OT. Hell, I don't even know who Celeborn is. And Isildur is human, right? How does he even live that long?
You 100% should know Isildur because of Elrond repeatedly going "ISILDURRR, CAST IT INTO THE FIRE" lol
And you definitely know Elrond.
Most of the flashbacks are specifically about them.

I will disagree about tension, because even though you may know they survive you can still have anticipation of seeing how the story resolves itself.
We knew Saul survives to be in breaking bad, but there is stll tension

Oh, yeah, ok, I vaguely remember that guy. So the ring would explain how he lives so long.

The wolves aren't wargs, hence they are different.
Sure, all balrogs can look the same in this show, but that doesn't mean Durin's Bane in this show has to look like Durin's Bane from Peter Jackson's version.

Tolkien never gave a really clear description in the book so it would have been great to stray from the horned daemon trope.

I thought Thor was going to bust in and they start playing "Immigrant Song" when I saw that.

Look, the show is playing loose with the timelines. It's debatable whether Elendil and Isuldir should even be alive before Barad-Dur is built (Sauron's tower in Mordor).

Do we think King Durin knows the Barlog is down there, and that's why he doesn't want them mining the mithril? Or is Durin just being a stubborn ass?

Also, part of me likes to imagine that James Delos is simply playing dress up as King Durin, and that Middle Earth is just a another park in Westworld we never saw.

(Considering they're played by the same actor, Peter Mullan.)

That's not the point. It is the same Balrog. This show has a different visual style than Peter Jacksons. I am disappointed they went the easy route with Durins Bain.

Solid rebuttal to this idiotic article:

Just Some Guy

Actually that was a really solid article based on a lot of facts.

It's almost miraculous that most people in this thread are more or less satisfied with the show, which is a complete 180 considering everyone was ****ting on the trailer and predicting doom.

Speaks to how solid and entertaining the show is.

But hey if you want to keep watching youtubers who do nothing but complain, be my guest.

It's the same 10-15 people liking the show in this thread. Pretty much everyone who didn't like it never watched/stopped watching the show and therefore stopped following the thread.

My big problem with the article is the attempt to label critics of the show as "fascist-adjacent" and "patently evil." The author decided to mention Giorgia Meloni being a Tolkien fan? Just Some Guy is a black liberal, but his criticisms make him a racist? Idiotic.

Star Wars has been relying on known characters in prequel storylines for 25 years now and still keeps doing it, yet people keep watching it despite knowing nothing of real consequence (death) happens to a lot of the characters.

I do think that overusing it though does make it very boring like Obiwan. Andor is probably better I just can't bring myself to watch another prequel storyline tying directly into the rebellion and skywalker saga.

Without looking it up specifically, it has do with them siding with elves in the war against Morgoth.
its also hard to remember if something was only in the books, or just a passing mention in the movies as well.
It should be if it wasnt, for this very reason.

Only hint to this in the movies is in the extended edition, a funny scene where Eowyn finds out Aragorn is 87.

Pretty good episode, probably not as good as the last one, but still solid.

Ugh...I still hate the whole "mythril is going to save the elves" bs. That said, dang I love the Durin/Elrond/Disa scenes.

So...Halbrand, a skilled blacksmith, is going to Lindon? Probably Eregion? Probably going to meet Celebrimbor? Maybe talk about smithing? That's cool...don't see how that could possibly ever go wrong.

L-O-FREAKING-L HARFOOTS! Leave your friends behind ("We wait for you!"), send away the big guy who saved one of your own's bacon, scared away the wolves, and also saved the grove...karma's a *****, ain't it? Sorry, I just don't like them.

Interesting that the Southlanders are going to an "old Numenorian" settlement on Middle Earth. But it somewhat contradicts with what Pharazon was telling his little brat a few episodes ago; if they already had a settlement there, then why act like helping the Southlands would be that big of an economic advantage. One of you guys more familiar with the lore, did Numenor withdraw from Middle Earth before their end? I can't remember...

Really sad that there's only one episode left. So many loose ends dangling around right now it's maddening.

I guess i am confused. Why cant Isuldir die? Bc he hasnt had kids yet and his great great great grandson isildur is the who chops off sauron's ring?

A bit of a bridge episode, but to be expected after last week.

Still not crazy about the Harfoots storyline, which continues to be a snooze fest, but enjoyed the rest of the storylines.

Celeborn mention was unexpected. I just figured Galadriel hadn't met him yet, but now I guess we gotta see a reunion before the show is done.

Got a mention of one of the first cities in Gondor, so that's pretty neat. Not sure what they're doing with Isildur, but I'm guessing we'll see them start to build Minas Tirith next season possibly? That would be cool.

Not sure where Halbrand's story goes from here. If the Southlands people start settling Gondor, who of course become Isildur's people, I'm wondering there he lands in all this. Maybe he travels north and establishes Arnor, where he eventually becomes the Witch King? (I know that screws with the lore though.)

Guess I was wrong about The Stranger being the Balrog of Moria. I'm sticking with Blue Wizard.

New Zealand landscapes are just ridiculous.

Do y'all think last week was the big action set piece of the season, or do we get another in the finale next week?

Oh my God. I feel like we're being expertly trolled.

But if not....do you really not remember the name that gets mentioned all throughout the trilogy? You know, the guy who cut the ring off Sauron, failed to destroy the ring, and then Aragorn spends an entire trilogy hearing himself be called Isildur's heir? And then getting the sword in the third movie after it gets reforged?

I mean I would understand not knowing Elendil, but Isildur? He literally had more screentime than Sauron and probably as many mentions.

I'm just poking fun, but damn.

This scene alone...

Also no, the ring has nothing to do with his lifespan as he didn't have it that long. Numenorians lived much longer than men, and Aragorn was in his 80's in LOTR as he descended from them.

I will say, one of the cheesiest things I've seen in an episode of TV in a long time was the "SOUTHLANDS" text changing to "MORDOR" at the end. Loved the episode itself, but man that was bad. Why not just have Adar literally say "Mordor"? It was set up perfectly. Or just not show it/say it at all, and let that final shot speak for itself, since 90% of the audience already knows.

That happens in the flashback/prologue thing, right? At the *very* beginning of TEN-HOUR epic, right? I'm sorry, but I remember next to nothing about that part. I could tell you a lot about the "present-day" plot with Frodo, Gandalf and the gang, but no, that prologue thing is a blur.

Ha, some of y'all need to take a breather and realize that not everyone remembers every last frame and name of this franchise.
