Elrond didn't explain himself properly to Durin but he didn't even know it existed when he went there. That was somewhat the pint in that the king and the smith suspected it existed and manipulated him into spying for them.

Forgive me if this is a derail, but I'm curious. How did people on this thread get into LOTR?

A friend of mine got me to read the Hobbit in third grade and I read through the LOTR trilogy and accompanying books over the next year or two. Hobbit is still one of my favorite books and I read it about every two years. My son is 9 and we finished the Hobbit together this past spring and we're just wrapping up Two Towers this week.

What's general consensus on appropriateness time to start the Hobbit? One of my kindergartners loves to read and I can't wait to share some of my favorite books with him (and my daughter but she's generally less interested). Hobbit/LOTR, Indian in the Cupboard books, Sideways Stories, etc

I definitely think it depends on the kid, but the Hobbit wasn't written as an intense, scary book (which is sort of one of my gripes with the trilogy of Hobbit movies). Especially when read with a parent, I don't think they come across as frightening, but I only know me and my own kids.

I was given the hobbit as a gift in kindergarten - then my dads gf gave me dune and lotr for a trip we went on in 1st grade. Took about a year to read the first time. Then the 77 movie came out. Reread many times as a kid.

Dune is a bit of a step up from The Hobbit, gotta say.

Got into them after the first movie came out I think? I may have started Fellowship before the first movie, can't remember. But I do know that by the time Return of the King came out I knew the whole story. Believe I read Hobbit after the LOTR trilogy.

Like others said, definitely depends on the kid. I loved to read pretty early on, but in Kindergarten I was just learning letters and doing the school readers so a chapter book probably would have been too much for me then, but it was only a few years later that I was reading The Hardy Boys books.

And man I always forget about the Sideways Stories books. Those were great.

Speaking of fantasy reading for kids, in elementary school I got into the Redwall series. That whole series was the most formative for my reading habits and interests nowadays. Highly recommend them for that age group. I think I started in 3rd or 4th grade?

When I first moved to Canada. I was about 6 years old. We lived with my dad's college roommates for 1 month before my dad finished his masters and started his job. My mom used to work evening shifts, so my dad and his roommates had a habit of taking this old projector of theirs and watching a movie on the white wall of the living room of the apartment.

First movie I remember being on that projector was Fellowship. Fell in love right away. The book that taught me English was the Hobbit.

Harry Potter pretty much opened me up to all things fantasy, read the hobbit and some of LOTR. Not my favorite writer to go through though.

I think as a kid HP, CS Lewis, Hobbit are all pretty good gateway books to introduce you to the genre.

Kindergarten/1st grade is a completely fine time to start.

I was in 1st grade ESL and learning English at the same time as I read the Hobbit. (Also confusingly I had French class too so I was learning two languages at the same time). They took me out of ESL after the first semester.

Never did learn French though. Hon hon hon.

Oh yeah, I can't wait for them to read the Narnia books.

Frankly it's really I just want to read all these books and need an excuse.

Personally, I didn't know much about it until the movies came out. I remember seeing The Hobbit displayed in the library as a kid, but never read it. I actually didn't know they were related until a few years after the movies. That's when I got into the books and have loved it since.
My dad gave me a copy of The Hobbit when I was in 5th grade. After that my first exposure to LoTR was probably the Ralph Bakshi cartoon before I read the actual books themselves.

There is an actual LotR thread on this forum, as well. I created this one for the show to keep the two separate. Not that I care about LotR talk anywhere, just pointing that out.

Yeah, I couldn't put lotr down.but Dune took me a while as a kid. I think I put it down a few times as it was over my head and that floating fat man creeped me out.

Another vote for redwall as an entry-point into fantasy reading. Such good books.

I was lucky enough to go hear Brian Jacques talk at the local Barnes & Noble when I was in 6th grade. I have 2 hardback books from the series signed by him.

Another vote for the Redwall series. Didn't Netflix or someone purchase the rights for them?

Getting back to the series, this episode just fell flat for me. Numenor scenes and actors, outside Elendil, just don't hit the mark. It seems the story is slow developing but the actions/decisions are irrationally made. If that makes sense. Also, has anyone else noticed the Galadriel actress seems to always talk with a locked jaw/closed lips?

I'm not sure which new series is worser...Power Rings or Dragon Haus.

Both are not only bad, but also boring.

I am enjoying Rings, even though I think it has flaws. Whereas Obi-Wan was disappointing in its flaws, this is still keeping me very interested...and it's not bc I love LOTR more than Star Wars, or anything.

But it does need to pick up the pace, which could be this week

I'll probably keep watching. I can't stand Hobbits, or whatever inbred cousins the whortfoots are.

The elves are just dorks. The story line was just bad. I think we're only 2 episodes in.

Dragon Haus...I think we're 1 episode behind.

But I have seen the Fletches, so I've got that going for me.

So they're terrible, but you continue to watch them, and feel the need to post that you are watching them even though they're bad?

You know, lots of places need volunteers for people who have too much time on their hands.

Can anyone tell me WHY the humans in the Southlands are hell bent on defending this tower? Why don't they want to leave? Not sure if i missed something but l'm not sure if i understand their motivation for staying to fight or bowing to Adar when leaving is also an option.

I think they just want a shelter. And most of them have no idea what an orc looks like or how many there are or anything like that. A few of them saw the one orc's head, but hey, that means it couldn't be that tough to kill, some witch-lady killed it with her kid. Where are they going to run to? Most seem like they've never been far from home.

They and their families are from there and have likely never gone far, as Pork said.

This tower represents the only "show of force" they most likely have ever known.

Started and got caught up in the last two days. It sounds like I'm in the minority, but I'm loving this show so far.

Granted I've not read the Silmarillion so maybe key plot points are changed and that has some folks in a huff.

Love the scenery. Everything feels recognizable but different. Music is on point. Mostly like the casting, though I think the Numenoreans were all crap except for Elendil.

Don't like the too convenient plot devices though. Arondir needs to get set loose? Sure, just turn him loose. Galadriel needs an army? Okay, I'm gonna instantly change my mind so we can keep things rolling along. Agree with the "too many mystery characters". I am not sure Sauron has actually been revealed yet.
