I love this show and the GOT show that are both playing.

I look forward to Fridays and Sunday nights.
I enjoy both, as well, but find myself waiting for Rings, more.

Edit: I'll add that both need to inject some more action, soon

Just finished episode 5 of GOT and I think it's just getting slower for me personally. Too much political drama and I actually have no one I'm particularly cheering for. Watching the preview for this weeks feels like more of the same they just are older now. Maybe it's building to some grand conflict with a nice payout, but I am not a book reader so wouldn't know.

Gotta give the edge to LOTR for now but I am a high fantasy fan and not necessarily into Rated R Downton Abbey with dragons.

I did lose interest in She Hulk though.

And that's me as well, which is why I'm still watching both. But I cannot honestly say either are shows I would even consider good. They just happen to be fantasy based shows on TV, so I watch them.

Just finished episode 5. Think that one was my favorite of the bunch so far overall.

"Give time the meat, and give it to me raw!"

Durin's line definitely gave me a chuckle.

I'm actually really liking the look of the show. I like that it looks a little different than the original LOTR trilogy. If y'all remember, the flashbacks in LOTR had a different feel camera and world wise than the 3rd age we were shown. Maybe Elrond looked the exact same, but that's about it. I think it's neat to see a contrast between this and the 3rd age.

Also, the tree having those issues is kind of a nice answer to some of y'all's complaints about how the elves look less "immortal" in this show. I don't have that same complaint, I like the variety.

Heck, I even liked the Harfoots stuff this episode. Minus that lady suggesting leaving the one group/family behind. The Harfoot chant continues to become less and less true and more and more stupid.

One more con of this episode: some of the camera work was a little weird, mainly in the dialogue one on one scenes. That being said, the big world views at the start more than made up for it.

Solid episode. Weldreg is punk

I agree about the camera work, especially in the scene between Galadriel and Halbrand. It was like they were stretching the picture or something.

It bugs me that Galadriel isn't at least as tall as Halbrand. Probably should be as tall as Elendil, too. Oh well. I find myself wanting more scenes with Elendil...and they'll have to bring his other son into the show at some point. What's up with the sister?

New mystery group enters the chat. They are going to milk these identities for too long.

Durin is great. I love the thing about the table. Gil-Galad is probably not that dumb, though. Oh and when Durin was making Elrond repeat stuff I kept thinking of Run DMC. "Whose hands? Durin's hands!"

Made up how, in context of the lore?

I mean this is all made up stuff.

Yeah in a lotr context. That wasn't even hinted at as being a thing anywhere in Tolkien's writings as far as I'm aware.

Tolkien:

Quote:

The doom of the Elves is to be immortal, to love the beauty of the world, to bring it to full flower with their gifts of delicacy and perfection, to last while it lasts, never leaving it even when 'slain', but returning - and yet, when the Followers come, to teach them, and make way for them, to 'fade' as the Followers grow and absorb the life from which both proceed. The Doom (or the Gift) of Men is mortality, freedom from the circles of the world.

I guess that you could charitably say that Gil-Galad is worried about the "fading" piece of the equation, but that's not really the same thing as "losing" immortality.

Yep, really the first big misstep in the Elf/Dwarf line in my opinion. My guess is they're trying to lay the foundation for the later Elf/Dwarf animosity that we know from the movies. But it's just...dumb. Are we seriously going to NOT have Celebrimbor and Narvi make the Doors of Durin? Moreover, the scene with Elrond and Durin at the end was ok, but I felt like the dialogue wasn't really that good. Like, I feel like he should have further explained Gil-Galad's role in this. And while we're on that topic, it does seem like this kind of manipulation and deception is out of character for the Noldur, but I'm not as well versed in the lore as many of you so I will readily admit I could be off target there.

Edit: So on further thought, the Noldur (under Feanor) DID commit the First Kinslaying, so I guess I really shouldn't hold them to terribly lofty ideals, although that was back in the First Age...

Pharazon's kid and Elendil's daughter are rapidly approaching Harfoot levels of "make me NOT fast forward this".

Oddly enough, I didn't hate the Harfoot scenes this week.

Can we please, just...please, STOP WITH THE ****ING MYSTERY IDENTITIES!! They're going to leave so many freaking cliffhangers at the end of the season that it pisses people off more than anything else.

My guess is the freaky white trio is a cult that worships Morgoth/Sauron and thinks Meteor Man is him. At this point, I'm not sure what to think he is. Obviously he has magical abilities, but it's like it took a physical toll on his body to use it, which we've never been given any indication of before, and the music/mood took a really dark turn when he used it.

Am I the only one that got some STRONG Aragorn vibes when we see Halbrand in armor on a horse?

Not my favorite episode this week, but still ok, I guess. I'm trying to just shove questions/annoyances to the back of my mind so I can enjoy it, but the endless dragging out of "who are they, really" just makes it so much more difficult to do.

The Dwarves continue to be the best part of this show.

This world continues to feel so small. Not sure if that is the cinematography or what.

I also hated that they copied the balrog from the movie. I was looking forward to a different take.

I mean, yeah it's herky jerky, but then again I thought the dead army taking a minute to sweep away the entirety of Sauron's forces in ROTK was also herky jerky.

IF this leads to the reason why the elven rings are forged, honestly I prefer it vs Celebrimbor being an idiot.

Not gonna lie final scenes in Numenor had me a little pumped for next week.

It was a slower transitional episode but I think next week should be fun.

Still looking forward to this more than the gossip of the week on GoT.

Yeah, the sense of scale is a bit torqued.

Im enjoying it anyway, though the mithril deal seems like a really cheap take.

And a pretty major logic fail. I mean 'oh look, we just figured out we need to mine this **** or we all die all of a sudden, for no particular reason now, after 4 gazillion years of drinking wine and making fancy knives without it.

Oh, ok, lets go talk to my dad about it. Dont really care about - why, why now, prove it, what are you going to do with it, how much do you need, when do you need it?

Oh and you just happened to figure this out the same week we find the **** in the first place?

Oh, and by the way, how did you know we found it again, and why did you lie about it again?

Oh well, **** it, lets' play a joke on the corporate dork looking elf's dinner table instead.

The Elves could just be wrong about the Mithril right? I'm not necessarily calling that a misstep yet.

But yeah, interested to see how the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria are gonna turn the tide of war.

Yes... that was also goofy, and one of my top issues with the RotK. Pointing to a stupid mechanic in one movie to defend a stupid plot point in this show is not a good agruement.

Arda seems to be hinting the sun will be disappearing soon. I think the sword hilt is a key to causing Orodruin to open up and begin spewing its ash. This is what covers the land of Mordor and turns it into a wasteland.

I found this episode to be very "meh".

The dialogue in this show is soap opera quality. they make us spend an entire hour with a slow moving story, yet seem to rush this dialogue and make immediate jumps in plot that seem jarring.

This mithril plotline immediately made me cringe. Talk about plot convenience at its max. I really disliked that more than I know how to put in words.

I am starting to also get the feeling that they are going to retcon the Nine and make the Queen Regent one of them, which I absolutely hate. I hope to God they don't do that.

Again, after 5 episodes in, Elendil is BY FAR the best thing about this show. I am now wishing we just got a show completely from his point of view and no one else's. The actor is perfectly cast for this role, is knocking it out of the park, and he has the least bad dialogue in the show. With all these random badasses around, we better get to see a truly heroic Elendil in battle. Seeing as it was Sauron himself who had to come out to defeat Elendil, I want to see him wreck some mofos. He is also really the only character I can say represents the nobility of Numenor.

That leads me to how I dislike the portrayal of the Numenoreans. These were men and fighters so gifted in their marshal prowess that Sauron feared them until he had gathered so much strength. Yet, we are shown a gaggle of "soldiers" who are barely competent in their fighting skills. We are told not all Numenoreans are good guys, but Tolkien NEVER portrays them as physically incapable.

In the book, yes. It was Bilbo's poem about Aragorn. A line from it was in Gandalf's note to Frodo, so he knew he could trust Strider.:

All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.
From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.

Forgive me if this is a derail, but I'm curious. How did people on this thread get into LOTR?

Personally, I didn't know much about it until the movies came out. I remember seeing The Hobbit displayed in the library as a kid, but never read it. I actually didn't know they were related until a few years after the movies. That's when I got into the books and have loved it since.

I first saw the Hobbit cartoon. That came out the year before I was born but would NBC replay it in the 80s? I think we had a Hobbit Memory game when I was a kid (although it may have been the animated Lord of the Rings because I think I remember there being memory cards that I didn't know who they were).

Probably first read the book jn third grade. Read it a couple of times and then read the Lord of the rings. My mom still has our original set less the two towers.

Honestly? First exposure to the legendarium was via the old animated Hobbit movie (and to a lesser extent the animated Return of the King) as a young kid I. The 80s. Then I got into SFF books from my older brothers, eventually making my way to LotR. The live action films were more of a culmination of a long fandom rather than an introduction to me.
