No. In the book, Saruman travels to the Shire, where you find he had been sending men to take it over while the Hobbits were away. Once Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin get there, they find the Shire under control by the big folk, who are basically bandits. They start a revolt and fight them off. They find Saruman is there without much of the power he used to have. A situation then happens like the movie, where Saruman is mean to Wormtongue and he has enough... then stabs him in the back. The Hobbits actually then shoot Grima after the ordeal.

This chapter is called the Scouring of the Shire, and I actually really liked it. You got to see Merry and Pippin use their experience to basically become leaders in the Shire and dispatch of this bandit group.

It's a spoiler for a book that has been out for a very long time. But if there is someone who is watching this show and it makes them want to give reading the book a shot, I don't want to ruin anything for that person. It doesn't hurt anyone for me to spoiler tag that explanation.

So I watched episode 3 last night since I had been traveling last weekend. Have to say I loved Numenor.

However, I'll admit that the episode kinda dragged for me for the first 30 minutes or so. I feel like we're still in the "setup" stage, and because this is going to go 50 hours, I'm fully aware they need to do that more than the average show, but it did sort of lose me here and there. The harfoots lost me a bit as well as the elves digging.

(Man, that harfoot chief is ruthless huh? Leave people behind for minor injuries rather than slow down the caravan?)

I will say that as amazing as the show looks, I'm not hugely digging the look of it quite yet. The colors pop so much that it's almost oversaturated to the point of looking TOO real. I sort of wish they went for a more grainy, cinematic look like the original trilogy had, if that makes sense. Numenor in particular just didn't quite feel like Middle Earth to me. Then again, maybe it's not supposed to.

It took me a second but I'm digging the Isildur casting now. Elendil was great.

The last half of the episode got me back and I'm looking forward to episode 4.

I watched about half of Fellowship last night for the hell of it. I agree - this is just such a great movie, and it gets better each time I watch it (which is more than a handful of times at this point). Hard to believe it is over 20 years old.

I also watched Fellowship extended with some buddies on Sunday while the Cowboys game was on (yes, we had two TV's going), and needless to say our attention was fully on the movie for the last 45 minutes or so. (Also my first time seeing it in 4k.)

That movie still holds up in every way. Perfect movie.

One of the things I'm most looking forward to in this show is the development of Isildur. As someone who loves Boromir, I think we'll be getting a fantastic character arc for him as well, sure to be complex but tragic in the end.

As a kid, hearing about Aragorn's ancestry and that "weakness" in him always intrigued me.

The season should end with the Harfoot leader having to stop to take a huge dump and when he's done, everyone's gone.

I like the look of Numenor and the vibrant colors. Even if it's already been poisoned by Sauron, it's still the height of culture and society and apart from Middle Earth. I liken it to the Glory of Rome in Gladiator when they return home with Commodus as the new Emperor.

While the look, music, and action of Rohan in both TTT and ROTK are my favorite parts of the entire trilogy, FOTR is far and away my favorite of those 3 films, and I can't think of a more perfect adaption of a book to a movie. I'm always so impressed how much it takes its time to show you what this world is and what these characters about; other movies would have rushed through the Shire, the birthday party, the prologue, etc. FOTR acts like a history lesson, like nostalgia for something that's never actually been seen outside a few attempts at cartoons. And builds the tension from the lone black rider to the whole lot of them to moria to the uruk hai attack. I remember taking a buddy of mine to see it who didn't know the story of LOTR at all and when they get into Moria telling him, this next 30 minutes or so is just going to blow your mind.

I've never been a D&D guy, but a couple of my buddies were saying the second half of FOTR is essentially like watching the ultimate D&D campaign.

I'll say it again and again anytime the music comes. The LoTR soundtrack is the greatest film soundtrack of all time. Other films have great music, but nothing has ever been able to create that emotional attachment to the film like Shore did.

Agreed. I'm a diehard, unashamed John Williams fanboy, but what Shore did is a collective piece of art that will most likely never be surpassed in cinema. It is truly the only soundtrack I can just listen to repeatedly from start to finish.

The Fellowship of the Ring is the best of the three, and that separation increases for me with every watch. I have seen it more than the others over my lifetime, originally because it was the very first DVD we ever had. I was 14 and watched that thing so many times.

I love all the little things you pick up over time, as well. One thing it took me nearly 20 watches to realize is after the burial of Boromir, Aragorn is putting on Boromir's bracers. I love those little easter eggs like that. Does it matter to the story? No. Do most people realize it? No. But it goes in stride with the attention to detail, character, and world building that the original trilogy provided us.

That is depth. Even though the Rings of Power has been enjoyable enough to watch, it feels shallow and not nearly as carefully crafted as the original trilogy was.

To be fair, Jackson was allowed to use the full measure of the LOTR books, written by a masterful author. RoP is having to use the appendices to try and tell stories that are fully fleshed out in works they're not authorized to use and rely on screenwriters who are not anywhere near Tolkien in terms of literary capability. I'm not saying they couldn't do better, but they do have a bit of a handicap.

Perhaps, but I don't really buy that.

Now, obviously some of the best lines from the movies are pulled from the book, nearly word for word, but that's just dialogue. Worldbuilding is essential for true fantasy buy-in, and the showrunners have basically thrown worldbuilding out the window. That is fully at their fingertips, from Tolkien.

Granted, if you bring up the importance of worldbuilding on these threads, people just call you a nerd and dismiss you.

Like I said...they could do better, though it's not like we're dealing with WoT here. They're not doing bad.

And I'm with you that worldbuilding is very important, but it's not the only important factor, nor the only reason we love Tolkien's writing. The dialogue and storylines themselves are also top notch. You can have a beautiful rich world, but if the story sucks then nobody really cares. That's where I think they're falling short the most at the moment.

I'm not sure I agree they have done no worldbuilding in this show.
