It's an action mystery drama that's 3 hours long, not an action comedy.

Light hearted jokes don't work in a Batman movie. The only funny-ish parts were by other characters and very far between, which is understandable given the story is told almost completely from Batman's point of view (and he isn't a funny person).

Finally saw it yesterday, technically very well made and I enjoyed it. As others have said it felt long and I was ready for it to end about 20 minutes before it actually did.

I liked the Riddler being a kind of creepy DIY Zodiac style serial killer. It seemed like they ramped up the stakes unnecessarily when he suddenly inspired an army of followers and a plan to flood the entire city.

I thought this movie was really underwhelming. I watched Batman Begins, TDK, and TDKR the week before I saw it just to compare, and The Batman doesn't even come close to measuring up. Really a disappointing take on Bruce Wayne, and Riddler was so forgettable. Instead of developing him as a villain, they relied too heavily on absurd anti-right wing propaganda. I literally laughed out loud in the theater when it became clear that the actual "villain" was a bunch of evil, white, male, gun enthusiast boogeymen posting on "fringe" message boards, who by the way were prompted to lash out by the "white privileged *******s" running the local government. White people bad, black people good. HOW ORIGINAL. DIDN'T SEE THAT COMING.

Also, it was an overly dark movie, and I don't mean depressing and serious. I mean visually it was way too dark. I found myself amused that scene after scene after scene occurred in the dark, with the events taking place sometimes barely perceptible. Mayor's house: dark. Bat cave: dark. Outside on the street: dark. Bruce Wayne's house WITH THE LIGHTS ON: still dark. Night club: dark. Election results party: dark. I actually had to squint once or twice to figure out what the **** I was watching or who was talking, and I have perfect vision. Post all of the YouTube videos you want trying to justify it, but there's nothing enjoyable about watching that for almost 3 hours.

I love long movies when it translates to the characters and the plot being thoroughly developed with a great payoff at the end. But this movie was 2 hours and 45 minutes long, and there's was no reason for it. Nothing about the characters or the plot justifies the length.

Overall, this movie is ridiculously self-indulgent, takes itself way too seriously, and acts like it has some important point to make, but really it has nothing important to say at all and instead regurgitates political rhetoric that is so absurd and overused at this point it's just laughable. I guess I should have expected nothing more from Hollywood in the 2020s, but I thought they would at least TRY to live up to the high bar set by Christopher Nolan. Very disappointing.

It actually had the exact opposite effect on me. I rewatched a bit of TDK after this, and it suddenly felt quite dated. Don't get me wrong, I still think it's the best Batman movie (though only by the thinnest margin), but it now looks/feels every bit its age - a movie that's somehow 14 years old.

I find it hilarious that this movie has no political agenda whatsoever, simply features disgruntled males using guns, and that YOU'RE the only one making the right-wing connection (never mind the fact that they're all wearing masks and we have no idea if they're all white or not). Tells me everything I need to know about how offended you're looking to be, Karen.

I mean it's not that hard to make the leap from Riddler's followers to incels/4chan/whatever the current right-wing boogeyman man is, but I think it's a pretty shallow reading to assume the movie has a pro-left political message considering that corrupt politicians, i.e. The Swamp(TM) are portrayed as the cause of Gotham's problems. People can see what they desire to see I guess, but outside of Catwoman's white privilege comment this movie seemed pretty much down the middle politically to me.

I'm pretty quick to spot political bullcrap in movies, and yeah, it is heavily prevalent in many movies these days, but other than the white privilege line from Catwoman (that actually fit this particular portrayal of the character), I didn't find The Batman to be an attack on the political right.

I obviously wasn't the biggest fan of this movie and I think people will see it as vastly overrated when the recency bias wears off but man if it doesn't amaze me how many people on TexAgs get triggered when a character even breathes a word of a political view that they don't 100% agree with. So many people here are so damn afraid to be even exposed to something that you don't find politically ok 100% of the time. I heard the catwoman line and forgot it 2 minutes later but apparently for many in here that was just too much to take.

If you really did come away from this movie feeling this way then I legit feel sorry for the reality you choose to live in, and suggest that your other news and entertainment sources might be the actual cause of your views on The Batman movie rather than anything in the actual movie itself. Anybody choosing to see the messages you claimed to see in this movie has a pretty warped world view.

And I also suggest you change theaters. I had no problem seeing any of the scenes without squinting. And I certainly don't have perfect vision.

only issue i had was Catwoman being able to pick up the money bag while driving the motorcycle.. That would be way too heavy for her to sling over her head and onto her back...
That bothered you but not Batman getting shot point blank with rifles and not getting knocked on his rear?
Well, i mean he has a batsuit.... she weighs no more than 100 pounds... She made it look effortless.

And? It's a comic book movie and Catwoman has shown pretty large feats of ability of strength and fighting. Kind of like the previous poster who was so glad Catwoman couldn't land a punch on Batman. Why? It's not out of the realm of possibility for her character. She was able to lift him to safety, even in the full bat suit. People need to get over themselves.
I think a lot of people, myself included, are tired of seeing women heroes get over on their male counterparts.

It's cool when it happens sometimes, but it has happened so much the last several years that it is now unexpected when the man holds his own.
lmao

Tell me your masculinity is fragile without telling me your masculinity is fragile.

I just can't imagine actually typing out that you are tired of seeing women beat up men unrealistically in comic book movies.

Carry on.

I guess I just blocked it out the first time. But it was such bullsh*t, and nothing more than blatant, anti-Penguin propaganda. I literally laughed out loud in the theater the second time, when it became clear that the "villain" was an evil, white, male penguin boogeyman just trying to move drops, who by the way was prompted to lash out by a "privileged Italian falcon *******s" running the local government. White penguin bad, black bat good. HOW ORIGINAL. DIDN'T SEE THAT COMING.

I live in actual reality. I'm not sure which "reality" you and the majority of this board are living in. The laughably absurd portrayal of "fringe" right wing gun enthusiasts being some kind of domestic terror threat is straight out of the leftist playbook and is far too overt to be anything other than political rhetoric. You are the one whose world view is warped if you're really and truly refusing to recognize that.

Hate how political everything is these days, especially in Hollywood.

That being said, I didn't get a political vibe from this movie at all. White privilege line was dumb, but it was 2s in a 3 hour movie.

True. If someone's take away is that this is some kind of anti-white anti-Republican movie, then I'm not sure what movie they watched.

I need to rewatch the entire context of the conversation, but on first viewing I thought it was a tiny bit of humor inserted into the movie. Just the irony of her taking a shot at rich white dudes, while talking to a rich white dude.

It's ALL in service of Bruce Wayne's arc.

The road from "I'm vengeance" to *symbol of hope* is paved with empathy.

- From the Riddler's story, Bruce comes to understand that even though he was orphaned, at least he wasn't a poor, abandoned orphan. He has Alfred. He has money. In other words, there are those who are far worse off than him, who took a much darker path (see: the Riddler).

- From Catwoman's story, Bruce learns that his money has allowed him to remove himself from society, his rage blinding him as to what is truly causing the crime he fights night after night - corruption.

Catwoman's "white privileged assh*les" comment isn't meant to be some racist, political, sjw bullsh*t against the right or whites or whatever. Again, not only does the line fit her character, it's a line ultimately meant to help snap Bruce, and Bruce alone, from his old, reclusive/ignorant/vengeful ways.

The Batman is about Bruce gaining PERSPECTIVE and EMPATHY, two key ingredients that allow his angry, vengeful self to ultimately become a symbol of hope; his vengeance "cured," so to speak, by the realization that others have it much worse than he does, and that his plight as Batman can be far more effective as a means to give *others* hope, as opposed to fruitlessly and corrosively trying to give *himself* closure via vengeance.

And just to be clear, it's not "Quit feeling sorry for yourself, you rich white assh*le. It's my plight and my feelings that matter, not yours." Rather, the movie's critique of Bruce is that he's feeling sorry himself in the *wrong* way. He's trying to cure himself through vengeance, when he could be curing himself AND others as a symbol of hope.

Either way, if you think any of that's "political" or "white guilt" nonsense, I don't know what to tell you.

He injects a substance into himself. The name of the substance is not mentioned but it seems like a prototype for Venom, the substance that Bane is addicted to in the comics

I disagree with TCTTS often on his takes around Hollywood and the political takes in a lot of movies but I agree with him here about this particular movie.

Sure there were a couple of cringey things but overall there was very little overtly political or SJW in this movie.
