Also, don't know if this has been posted, but I always enjoy this guy's channel. Gets very nerdy on the theory side of things, but love how he breaks some of this down. May be interesting to my fellow musician friends:

I've learned that you can connect Airpods to an AppleTV and it makes for a really cool viewing experience for movies like this. (Also doesn't wake up the baby.)

Same. I just couldn't get into this version. The whole thing was just so bleak. I'm 41 tho and no super hero movie has come close to Batman or Batman Returns for me.

I wanted to like it, but couldn't get past the casual wokeness of the dialog and themes of the movie:

1) All older white guys are proven to be corrupt and not worthy of their station
2) All pure characters were POC (Mayor, CW & Gordon)
3) Baddies ended up being stereotypical white message board 'gun nuts'
4) Batman was an analog for the police crisis we had a couple years ago and started out feared by everyone and was only ultimately redeemed when he learned to be a servant of the people and not an instrument of justice/enforcement.

I only watched it last night and that was my immediate response. Maybe I have a bad take, but I didn't end the movie with a desire to watch it again.

Just saw it, wow. Beyond surpassed my expectations. Pattinson is easily my second favorite Batman behind bale. And if he keeps this up he will overcome him. Great movie

Pattinson really go into method acting for this role. His inspiration was pulled from a previous great.

I don't disagree with your first three things, but a super left wing person could also look at the movie and say they didn't like it because it was trying to pass a theme that big government programs cause corruption and funding to mob type organizations. Or that Batman is excusing vigilante Justice. People who focus on politics in everything on either side are going to find things they don't like about the movie, is all I'm saying.

I do disagree with your last point. I don't think it has anything to do with the defund the police stuff. Batman was feared because he didn't care about Justice or enforcement. Starting out the movie, he was just beating the **** out of criminals as a coping mechanism for his parents being murdered for petty burglary. He's vengeance for crime. He didn't want to be anything other than a symbol for fear, as you can see by the first guy he saves being terrified of him and batman not caring or doing anything else to help him. He was redeemed when he realized that doesn't make him any different than the Riddler, and so he has to accept becoming a symbol for actual Justice and hope for the good of the city.

All older white guys? Sergeant Bock wasn't, and neither were a lot of the white cops. Alfred was white and innocent. Bruce was white and innocent. The face painted gang at the beginning of the movie were all people of color.

Catwoman was definitely NOT "pure". She stole money and broke into a crime scene and straight up shot at Falcone with the intent to kill. She makes one off hand comment that is supposed to take Batman off guard (since he's one of the rich white guys she's talking about).

Are you surprised that Gordon was "pure"? He has been "pure" in every iteration, including the JK Simmons (white guy) version in the DCEU (showing up in Batgirl later this year). Was in the Nolan trilogy, the movies in the 90's, Batman '66, the Gotham tv show, etc. That had ZERO to do with color.

The Riddler gang message board stuff was Riddler weaponizing people with the idea of vengeance, which was supposed to have Bruce realize he needs to alter his mission and go about it another way. He accidentally inspired The Riddler, who purposefully inspired his goons. They weren't spouting off any conspiracy theory crap.

Batman was just straight up Batman. This is the most comic accurate acting Batman in cinematic history. His Bruce isn't, but his Batman very much is. Matt Reeves loves the character too much to let him be an analogue to anything. He didn't know which police he could trust other than Gordon, and was proven right with the Kenzie situation. After Falcone was taken down he could see he could trust a larger amount of cops than before. He even sort of befriends Officer Martinez, who helps him solve The Riddler's final clue (albeit too late).

People see what they want to see, I guess.

Bingo.

We litigated the hell out of all this in this very thread, when the movie first came out, and a couple people on here said something similar to chilidogfood, basically just looking to be offended. So I'm not going to get into all of it again, if only because you do a great job calling it out here.

The opening scene with the nija stabbing mayor. "Dude that was terrible. If this is as good as the acting gets, this is going to be horrible."

After realizing it is a kid playing with his dad. Well. In a bigger idiot than normal.

The batmobile scene was better than I imagined. Just wow.

Catwoman was sexy as ****

All in all I enjoyed it and he made a great Batman but it a decent Bruce.

You left off the most important parts.

namely, that the incels were only armed with bolt action rifles with 5 round magazines.

The clear message is that if they had been armed with modern sporting arms they would have successfully complete their plan.

Also, the one weapon that was effective against batman was a shotgun.....Joe Bide's recommendation for home defense.

So all in all this .movie was clearly a treatise on the importance of gun control and an effective one at that.

I won't even touch on the subtext of the Jewish black woman actor.

TDK is more action packed and is sort of like the Empire Strikes Back of the Nolan trilogy.

The Batman is a completely different type of movie with some of the same characters.

Love both so much. My two favorite movies.

The way the theater reacted when the first scene went full imax

The way the theater reacted when the Joker's videos cut off

The way everyone in the theater thought the Joker was going to blow a boat

Just finished watching most of the behind-the-scenes content included with the digital release and I could not recommend it more. From the nearly hour-long making of documentary to the various featurettes, it's incredible stuff, with some great insights. The doc is almost nerve wracking in that they started filming in late January 2020 and frequently show the shooting dates up through mid-March when they finally had to shut down. But it's so interesting to see what was filmed before the pandemic and what was filmed during, when they resumed in September. It's also just really well done. And then the Penguin featurette especially, showing the makeup process with Farrell, is surprisingly affecting/impressive as well, and really stands out. The wing suit featurette is another cool one that shows just how much thought and work went into that sequence.

Anyway, it all just made appreciate the movie even more than I already did, and I highly encourage seeking it out if/when you get the chance.

His parents were in the movie, like a teenager, he rarely acknowledged their existence and basically treated them like the help.

So, I've been watching reaction videos and more clips of this movie over the last few days. Not to mention, watching the first 10 minutes several times now.

I just can't geek out enough about the intro to this movie. Everything from the title card that takes up the entire screen as Ave maria starts playing, through the binocular view, through the murder, through the voice over, and ultimate beat down. I just don't think you get more perfect, when it comes to film making. I truly think that is some of the best 10 minutes in any movie I have ever seen.

Okay... done nerding out for the night.
