I really like Fullers Guitar; very helpful staff. I've bought my Taylor, CS tele, 60's Original strat, and several peripherals from them.

They have a good selection of Fender electric from MIM to Custom Shop. They have round 12 or so gibsons on the wall, any given day. They also have a tone of Taylor, Martin and Gibson acoustics.

I believe they also have a decent selection of Gretches, as well.

Rockin Robin guitars is actually not a store I enjoy. I think the staff there are horrible. I almost feel like i'm not allowed in there, when I have gone.

Besides that, I don't really go anywhere else other than Guitar Center. The one on Westheimer is the largest in town, though I haven't been in over a year because the supply chain had the walls bare.

It looks like I'm going to be in Houston tomorrow. What are the cool stores to go to there? I know about Rockin Robin Guitars (from the good old days) but other than that I could use some recs.

Well????

I didn't find anything I had to buy.

Fuller's is very cool. And nice people.

Also went to Sam Ash and GC Westheimer.

Who did you speak with at Fuller's? John or Eric?

I've always appreciated John, and can count on him to pull something down that is fun to play. He's the one who introduced me to my #1 guitar. Had he not, I would have never played it.

I didn't catch names.

They had a Jim Adkins Tele in natural ash that was tempting.

Probably the most intriguing thing I saw on my trip was an Eastman SB-56 Goldtop at South Austin Guitars.

This is a cool video with the PRS color czar Matt Eriza. Nothing earth shattering but interesting to watch for me anyway. Matt has two colors named after him with PRS: Blue Matteo and Eriza Verde.

My old Ampeg rep posted this yesterday, pretty significant considering how dug into GK he was.

Wanted to share this new video posted from a channel I love. He will sometimes go months between posts, but I just sit there and watch him make these guitars. I wish I had the equipment and patience to do this one day. I may be able to at least build a telecaster from scratch, at some point.

My latest guitar saga. It began like this-

"For a year now I've had my eye out for a Paul Reed Smith Singlecut Goldtop, preferably a good used oeiginal Singlecut model, and preferably with P90s although regular humbuckers would be fine as well. The problem is I should have done this a couple of years ago, as prices have gone through the roof. I was looking to spend around $2K. Probably not going to happen in today's climate.

Recently I've been able to peruse the Eastman SB-56 Goldtop. 50s neck, Lollar P90s, retails around $1900 brand new. Interesting....

I seriously doubt I'm going to stumble upon a suitable original or core PRS in my price range any time soon. I'd look at an S2 McCarty if they did an actual Goldtop (older models were offered in solid Gold, but not Goldtop).

So I guess I'm asking for someone to tell me about Eastman, por favor."

Then on Monday I made a trip to Rockdale to visit my mom, and stopped at ma few shops on the way-

"So on the way to visit my mom and sister in East Texas, I went on a guitar roadtrip yesterday and today.

I had seen an Eastman SB56 online at a store in the San Antonio area. A store I had never been in, about 5 hours away from my house. The store was pretty cool, lots of stock. But the SB56 wasn't there. Was told it was in a seperate off-site warehouse. Oh well, moving on for now. Stopped at Sam Ash and Guitar Center in San ANtonio but nothing piqued my interest.

Today stopped by Guitar Resurection and South Austin Guitars. Both cool stores. Guitar Rez was down in stock (as many places are) but they had some interesting specimens. A Hamer Sunburst in great shape, and a Grosh Retro T Classic caught my eye. Also had a 1992 PRS CU24 in dark cherry sunburst that looked a lot like my first PRS from way back when. I did get lucky and snag a dark cream LP pickguard from a 1960 Classic that they just happened to have laying around.

From there to South Austin Guitars. They still had an Eastman SB56 that I had originally seen a couple of weeks ago. The only snag is they're asking a couple hundred dollars more than what everyone else seems to be trying to get. I decided to eat lunch and then hit the road.

About 20 miles out of town I got to thinking maybe I should have offered to buy it for what other places are asking for them. Should have thought of that while I was there.

Then, I get the wild idea to call the first place I went to yesterday and tell them if they can get that guitar from their warehouse, I could come back through there in a couple of hours and I'd be interested in taking it home. Salesman said he thought he could get it in the store but it may not be till the end of the day or definitely tomorrow morning. Sorry, I can't stay overnight to get it. Oh well, I guess the shop in the San Antonio area didn't want to sell me a $2000 guitar."

So today I got online and pulled the trigger-

NGD incoming

NGD!

Eastman SB-56. Killer guitar. The Lollar P90s sound great and are very quiet for P90s. Nice chunky neck. Finish is very light like their violins. And a proper case instead of a bag. Pics are from their website of the actual guitar I bought-

I'll let it acclimate a bit before I tear into it. But I think it will do the trick.

Congrats! I will have a gold top one day…

Curious about the neck profile. Is it chunky or more of a 60s shape?

Chunky. It's a bit bigger than the neck on my Les Paul 50s Tribute.

I've always wanted to learn to play guitar. What do y'all recommend as far as a good brand/model to start on? And what about lessons? I'm sure there are apps or YouTube videos or something.

I'm sure I posted this earlier in the thread, but maybe not.

I had a Takamine I bought '98 or so for $175 that I used to take lessons with in early 2000's for several months.

Ended up putting it away for 20 years. Last year decided I want to learn again. Signed up with an instructor at a local music store, he was recommended by old and young alike.

Takamine was fine but three months in my wife got me a Yamaha FG-830. $320. Sounds really good for the price and plays well.

Eventually I had a professional setup done on it. Had them put some Elixir brand strings on it. Lowered the action a bit. It feels and sounds great. Very good guitar for the money.

As for lessons, there are a ton of options. I like having a live teacher. I see him once per week either in person or via Zoom depending on my schedule. It drives me to practice when I know he might ask me to show him how well I mastered last week's assignments.

Online, there is Fender Play, Rick Beato has his courses, Rhett Shull has courses, Mary Spender has courses I believe, there is Marty Schwartz of Marty Music and Justin Guitar and more YouTubers teaching than you can count.

If I was doing online only I would probably go with Beato or Shull or Fender Play. Beato used to teach 50+ students per week before he did YouTube. He also used to be a music theory professor. But I haven't seen his stuff to know how it approaches beginners.

What do you want to do? Learn songs for fun? Learn chords and scales and theory and really understand where everything is and what scales work over what chord progressions so you can be advanced at some point?

Go try some guitars. See what feels good. If you know someone who plays that can go with you get them to help you pick one. Don't go too cheap or you might get one that is hard to play and not stick with it. You don't want to fight the instrument.

It's fun! And challenging! And feels good when you nail something you are learning that was hard previously.

Best advice I have gotten is "pick it up every day".

It's important to buy a guitar that plays easily, and you actually like the look of. Always get it setup by the store, and negotiate that in your cost of the guitar. Also, never put it in its case. Buy a guitar stand and keep it in the living room or bedroom in constant view. You are more likely to keep playing guitar if it is visible, easy to play, and appealing to your eyes.

From there, it's simply a matter of budget and who you like. Many people who want to learn to play guitar have a certain player or style in mind. It's always best to buy a guitar that allows you to get a similar sound, because it allows you to actually hear yourself getting closer to the song you like.

The advice above for some of those online courses is definitely good, but you definitely have to be more self disciplined, because you lose that accountability of going to a lesson and having the teacher see if you practiced. I appreciate both Rhett Shull and Rick Beato (I sub to bother their channels).

Justin Guitar has been around forever. I remember going to his site early on, when I was a novice.

Thank y'all for the advice. Makes a lot of sense to go to a store and pick them up and see what feels best. Do y'all have recommendations in Houston? Rockin Robin or Guitar Center?
