Hoping so.

I'm thinking Roy coaching Jamie would make for some fun story lines.

So from a soccer perspective, next season is going to be interesting...

SPOILERS FROM HERE but it's your own fault if you haven't finished this show already what's wrong with you?

Getting relegated is a massive financial hit, like in the tens of millions of dollars (pounds) per season range. Because of that relegated teams are generally forced to sell off their top players or have them leave for better opportunities. That makes the idea of someone like Jamie, who's a rising star in the Premier League, dropping down to play for Richmond pretty unlikely.

It would in reality also make keeping all their existing players really difficult, so I'm intrigued to see how realistically they approach that on the show.

Yeah, I thought about that too.

But I think they might stretch reality a bit. I could see a storyline were Jamie takes less money, and becomes a hero, to help them move up...or something silly like that. Or maybe he suffers an inury, and Man City loans him out after his rehab. I dunno...but I bet the reunite the crew somehow.

I think Jamie is set up to rejoin the team whenever they earn their promotion back up, potentially.

The rest of the players on the team, I kind of had the impression they were already budget players as is.

Maybe so, but that would mean he stays on the periphery of the show, and out of the main story line for an entire season.

After the Army man scene at the end (in the bus), it makes me think he'll be back somehow.

I would do the first episode as a flash through of the championship and skip ahead to the recently promoted side 2 years down the road.

I would tend to agree, you had young players like Sam, unknowns like Dani, and Roy past his prime. We never got much of a feel for anyone else in terms of ability or value so probably mostly role players.

Just food for thought, I'm personally really intrigued to see how they approach it.

But how do you work Jamie in to a "minor league" team? Jamie in season 2 really only makes sense if they skip the relegation season. But I think the comic and dramatic possibilities of a season in the minors would be too good to pass up.

It possibly could be that he gets injured doing something dumb, and gets loaned back to Richmond as a rehab opportunity.

I hope they take the FA Cup as the central soccer storyline next season. Would be fun to have to have someone explain to Ted which games (fixtures) go with what tournament

The brief conversation between him and coach when he's saying, 'so if you lose and get sent down, you play in the Championship?' That made me lol.

My guess is Jamie gets hurt and his only option is to land on a relegated team. This humbling experience leads him back to Richmond and everyone gets revenge in S3.

Easy way to keep the Jamie storyline connected. Richmond and Man City could easily match up in a third round FA matchup.

Can someone explain the loaning of players to me? Is that really like one NFL team loaning a player to another?

I love how this thread is slowly gaining steam as people are finding this show. I've yet to hear anyone who has watched it not heap lavish praise on. It appears to be universal acclaim.

Yes, but more often than not it's from one league to another.

You see it most often when big clubs sign a promising young player who's a future star but might not yet be good enough to get a ton of playing time, they'll loan them out to another team to get them experience.

You'll also occasionally see it like we did on the show, where Jamie was with one of the big clubs (Man City) and got loaned out to a lower team (Richmond) in the same league.

Correct, the key is trying to get your guy experience. You know he's not cracking your lineup.
I don't quite understand how they were able to recall Jaime's loan unless Rebecca truly did just offer him back.

Really enjoyed the season. Very funny. It also has a good heart without being sappy which is tough to do. I usually repeated the episode immediately and caught more jokes that I missed the first viewing.

I hope they take a smarter approach towards the soccer. I realize that the characters are the main feature, but the soccer should ring true.

It would have been simpler to make the owner sell all of the talent before Lasso got there. She could have pretended to have financial troubles when she really wanted to tank. Same story with Jamie. She sells the only great player to make some money. The only expensive guy she has is Roy Kent who is washed up.

It also seemed compressed. They lose first few games and Lasso is an idiot. Then they win one. The next game we really see is them trying to avoid relegation in final game. Very simple for reporter to ask "you've lost 4 outta last 5, are you going to change lineup?" Or a conversation between coaches. They play 38 league games, plus other tournaments. I don't want a complete rundown, just a better depiction of a season.

A lot of it is like sending players to AAA baseball to get reps when they wouldn't play on the first team.

Disagree. The soccer doesn't matter at all and making it "better" would be less fun.

Earlier in that episode or in the previous ep Rebecca said that Man City had asked if he'd be playing after Ted benched him, and Ted responded that he was planning to.

She could have responded that he wasn't going to be getting any playing time and influenced them (or even suggested) to terminate the loan.

I don't need to see actual soccer games. They showed about the right amount of actual game footage. A little more would be fine too. That's not my point.

We knew the result from first 3 or 4 matches and the final one or two. The writers just took a lazy shortcut and ignored the middle five months of the season.

They mention several times after the win in episode 5 their run of mediocrity. Once during an interview in the parking lot about to get on the bus and in the penultimate episode about Roy amongst all his personal struggles. It's implied throughout that they are struggling.

I thought it was pretty clear he was brought on in the middle of the season, referencing how they beat Crystal Palace earlier in the season so they weren't messing with the game plan, etc

Yeah, I love soccer - played it, coached it, watch it all the time - but I don't think they need to change the way they approach the sport aspect of the show. It's just a vehicle for the characters and that's where the real story is being told. There are some sort of cringey sports parts, but it's not overly bad. I think making it more central would honestly drive folks away instead of bringing more in.

At the very beginning, Roy mentioned they were at the bottom of the table, and Ted talked about how they did in previous games. I think they were trying to get across, that there was very little left in the season.

I dont think we should over-think the background. Someone mentioned Scrubs...that's a good example. It's a great show that happens at a hospital, but it wasnt exactly medically accurate. But who cares...it was fun the way it was.

One of the things I like about it....it's a feel-good show. It's redeeming.

Seems like most the shows coming out these days are so dark and gritty. This is a welcome change, from my perspective.

Completely agree on the tone of the show. My wife and I binged watched all the episodes in one day because the tone wanted us to keep going. When it's a darker tone, wife can usually only handle a couple episodes back to back before she wants to throw on the office or something lighter... Recommended the show to my brother, and they powered through five episodes last night alone. Definitely think there's going to be a re-watch in our future

I stayed up on the show every week. That gave me a lot of time to rewatch as we waited for the next episode. I've definitely already seen every episode at least 3 times.

I hadn't seen the original Ted Lasso spots for NBC Sports since they came out a few years ago so I looked them up. There's a few jokes that were recycled for the show but I thought it was interesting to see the changes they made to the character. I'm glad they did - while the original works for a few minutes in a short promo, I can't see it working as the focus of a whole show.

This is why many of us that knew the spots were shocked how deep of a show they were able to make. It had every making of a show that may come out with a hilarious pilot with no where to go. It was extraordinary what they were able to create out of that very thin premise.
