Opening weekend, TROS made 177 million compared to TLJ's 220 million.

After 8 days, it's about to catch up

Through 8 days: TLJ $321 million
Through 8 days: TROS: $316 million

Pretty sure it will catch up. The difference is going to come in the re-watch factor. Look at some of the posts before and after. The big difference is that this is a movie many will choose to go see again, if only to try to absorb what was missed in all the overly fast moving cuts. IMO, the "see it again" number is going to far exceed TLJ's. Know of far too many who couldn't get through it twice---TROS is not generating that it appears.

I've seen every Star Wars movie at least 10 times (between the theater and VHS, DVD, whatever). I've seen TLJ exactly one time. The one time I saw it in the theater. I tried to watch it when it was on Netflix and couldn't get through the first 15m and had to turn it off.

Been to TROS twice now and like it more the second time.

My favorite part of the movie is when Poe was talking with Lando about being so outnumbered. Poe asks Lando "How did you do it? Defeat the Empire?" and Lando's response was "We had each other."

Four and a half pages and not one post on Rey with Luke's helmet in Luke's X-wing. Simply awesome.

It's fascinating to me how many class of 89 (give or take) on here. I was also 10 in 1977. I also have been formed by 42 years of Star Wars and think it's noteworthy that there are so many of us posting on THIS thread.

Haven't seen this mentioned much, other than some alluding to finally getting a kind of "grown up" Star Wars scene with the Sith ceremony at the end, but damn if I didn't think of KOTOR when all that was happening! Felt like something right out of that story and era of the SW universe. So cool to see on screen.

Now we need a legit KOTOR film! Bring it!

I saw it today and loved it. Loved all the nostalgia and the callbacks.

If I would change anything, I would have Ben and Rey just hug and not kiss. He falls dead right afterwards. It felt weird for them to seal it with a kiss.

Yep.... that age range of maybe 7-14 in 1977 is like the perfect SW age wheelhouse and age 10/11 has a huge contingent I think. Any younger and you might not have had the same impact really, older and you were a little meh on it cuz you were "too cool" for it. but I didn't know anyone my age +/- 1 that wasn't a huge fan of SW.

I was 11 in 1977 and it felt like it not only changed my world but represented our entire age groups mentality and within our age group it was cool to be deep into SW. The more SW toys or gear you had the cooler you were really. We could not be convinced there was anything bigger, better or more impactful. And that feeling never really waned for us.

I love SW unabashedly (although the PT tried my allegiance by I remained devoted taking the good parts for what they were - at least it was SW) and now the ST has closed it out really well imho (TLJ issues not withstanding).

Overall I'm just thrilled to have had this 40+ year experience and shared it with my kids (now 24 and 21) - for whom it actually means a lot too. It's not their era but they have really appreciated it and love that we have something in common through that.

Very well said. I do believe that those of us in this age range (I was 10 in 1977) were the perfect age for that movie. I feel like I had a bit of a different experience with at, though, than what you describe. I was ridiculed for my overt love of all things Star Wars, mostly by the jock types and cheerleader types, or just plain old bullies. But I suppose among my close friends, yeah, we were Star Wars nerds and we all loved these movies. I had to keep that love for Star Wars in check around the larger population of the kids I went to school with, though, or my life was just kinda hellish as a result.

I was 12 in '77.

Saw Star Wars at the theater near Northpark Mall in Dallas (believe the theater was on the East side of 75).

I collected the Star Wars trading cards ..: yellow, blue, and red series (if remember correctly). Still have those trading cards stored somewhere in the house.

I was 6 or 7 when I first saw Star Wars. I think people like movies with ideas/content that is slightly out of reach. That stretch to understand is what hooks you and draws you in. The Force and Obi Wan disappearing really grabbed me in '77 because I almost understood but not quite.

Maybe it's the same reason 14 year olds like movies with nudity and the same reason nobody saw Bambi 10 times in the theater.

My wife got me this for Christmas:

Star Wars: The Jedi Path and Book of Sith Deluxe Box Set
https://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars%C2%AE-Jedi-Path-Deluxe/dp/1452126410/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=book+of+the+jedi&qid=1577986717&sr=8-3

It's not something I would typically get, but I read through it and it was kind of cool. Looking on Amazon, it shows this was released in 2014. However, I swore I saw a 2019 date when looking in the actual book. I need to do some research on whether this was updated, because there was a lot of stuff in here which seems to have been written to explain what we saw in TROS.

A few off the top of my head:

From the Sith Book:
I had trouble getting through this because a lot of it just didn't interest me. But there was a lot of history on the Sith and apparently they were a race of people. And the fallen Jedi went to their planet and took it over to become their rulers. A caste system was setup where they act as engineers, workers, etc for the Sith. It's likely these are the Sith Loyalists we see in TROS. It specifically mentions the engineers know how to design a 'star killer'.
It mentioned the power Palpatine showed at the end of TROS where he sent the lightning into the air against the ships.

From the Jedi Book:
It discussed how a Jedi can project a doppelganger like Luke did in TLJ.
It mentioned that Jedi using lightning (as Palpatine does) is something the Jedi are able to do, but is forbidden.
I dont think this means anything, but it specifically mentions that the yellow saber color is for the Jedi Sentinels. When you become a Jedi, you can go into one of three branches. This is one branch. But it sounds like those who fail their jedi trials can also go into this branch. My thought is that Reys saber color in TROS doesn't really have anything to do with this.

Just got home from my second viewing and took my three kids. They all really liked it. I thought I'd like it more on second viewing but I liked it about the same. Like a solid B.

At times I thought "Man this really is a bit choppy and rough" but then would get choked up. Particularly that final scene. Rey skidding down just like when we first met her. The two suns. :'''')

Overall a very fun ride. TFA is still my favorite of the three but this is second.

Since there are multiple threads and multiple pages to each, what's the story on Palpatine's kid and how did he make his presence known?

The opening crawl left a lot of WTF questions but still really enjoyed it.

it's going to be a Romeo and Juliet type romantic tragedy but with Sith and Jedi.
and instead of mutual suicide, stormtroopers will finally hit their target. and there will be a baby left in the desert. other than that, just like Romeo and Juliet.

Pretty cool to look at BoxOffice Mojo today:
https://www.boxofficemojo.com/chart/top_lifetime_gross/?ref_=bo_cso_ac

TROS is about $45,000 behind ANH for 17th all-time. It move passed Age of Ultron yesterday. It will probably ease by TPM ($474 million) for 16th by the end of this weekend, the knock off Finding Dory (#15, $486m) by the end of next week.

From there, it will be on track for $500m and the likes of the redone Beauty and the Beast ($504m) before heading northward into Rogue One territory ($532m).
