I've watched it twice now and I'm flat out obsessed with this album. I absolutely love it, and the anime is awesome. Trippy as hell. Favorite is probably the dancing in A Good Look, but I also love the art and style of Best Clockmaker On Mars.

Song wise I also love Ronin, Remember to Breathe, Mercury in Retrograde. Make Art Not Friends might be my favorite... This will easily be my album of the year.

Love Sturgill and his willingness to experiment. He's never done anything I didn't love, and I'm glad he's doing his thing his way.

Completely agree on the music. Haven't watched the film and probably won't, but I love the album. I also think Make Art Not Friends is my favorite.

I'll be honest... I'd never even heard a Sturgill Simpson song before this weekend. But I kept seeing this album mentioned everywhere, so I gave it a shot... and I've probably listened to it in-full four times since Friday. It's fantastic.

He's badass... you should listen to Meta Modern Sounds in Country Music or High Top Mountain next so you can be thoroughly confused

Honestly all I know do Sturgil is his last album that I spun a few times once the Grammy nom happened. That being said I ordered the colored vinyl and am waiting for my first listen when it arrives (hopefully tomorrow).

First off the vinyl is beautiful. Artwork looks amazing 12x12 and the red/black marble record is sweet.

One listen in and really enjoyed it. The standout on first listen was "Make Art Not Friends". That track was awesome. When the main groove dropped I was dancing at my desk.

Only complaint is yet again I spring for a nice vinyl and NO download card included. UGH! Off to go pirate a digital copy somewhere.

Ok, I've listened to this thing like 3 straight times in a row, and am rewatching it on Netflix again. This just keeps getting better and better.

There are three different color variations. Straight red, marbled red, and clear with red splatters.

I've had all records at initial release.

This is a surprising because normally you are really on top of what's happening in entertainment, even more than me.

I'd love for his set to be the entire album with the movie playing in the background then additional songs after.

Yeah he announced it today on JRE. He went on with the whole band. Link below if you are interested.

He also explains a little bit about the video in this. Not real in depth, but talks about how some of the scenes were homages to different anime works.

This album has definitely grown on me. I love it now. It's different, but it's still good.

Re the anime - what is it called? Is it one linear story with dialogue and such that you mute and play the record over? Or is the album already the only audio in the film? Is it short stories? I might have to check this out tonight.

Same title as the album "Sturgill Simpson Sound & Fury" It is one 41 minutes long show with the music as the audio. So basically a music video for the album.

I watched it last night. It's cool but not sure what I watched. I get the basic story, but I'll definitely have to rewatch to try and figure out some parts. Other than Akira though I've never watched any Anime, so not familiar with a lot of it's story telling devices.

Yesterday I spun the vinyl twice and then watch the movie once.

Spinning the vinyl again as I type this. Very infectious album. This morning as I was getting dressed I was randomly singing "Mercuryyyyy must be in retrograde again..."

Thanks!

Re the bolded I bet that's part of it, though and what he was going for. I'm surprised having seen Akira you weren't anticipating a "WTF" after the credits rolled.

I like it. It feels like he tried to remake 80's classic Heavy Metal complete with trippy adult cartoon and with all the different band sounds done by just his group. Definite Don Felder vibe, but others too. Pretty fun.

I've spun this at least twice a day since I got it. Just a great album.

The more I listen the more I feel like 10 years from now there are going to be a lot of great new bands that site this album as an influence. "The first time I heard Soundy & Fury, it blew my mind." Etc.

Tried watching the anime last night, but my girlfriend only made it "a good look" when everybody starting dancing synchronized that she begged me to turn it off.

Looks like this'll be something I'll have to watch while she's gone or asleep. She likes Sturgill too just hates anime.

I guess I'm just the grinch. I've listened to the album five times and... I just don't really like it. "Remember to Breathe" and "Make Art Not Friends" are decent songs, but I just want Metamodern Sturgill back. Just my opinion, and I applaud him for taking a chance and making the music he wants to make.

I do that all the time. Sometimes it takes some processing to really make a decisions on my feelings for an album. Especially something like this that sounds a bit different. Also, if it's an album that is getting generally great reviews, then I'll sit with it longer that most albums to give it a few extra chances.

This. I wanted to see if it grew on me. It did a little bit, but not enough for me to change my stance. Oh well, I'll see if I like his next album, and God only knows what style he'll try next.

Middle Eastern wailing mixed with Death Metal. The music video is shot in stop animation.

Just stopping in to say this album is awesome. It blows my mind that a guy, that could be the next Waylon Jennings, decided to do something this crazy and execute it perfectly. One of those rare albums that makes you change the way you think about music and also get you out of your comfort zone.

My thoughts as well.

Metamodern was his high point . . . for me.
The last two have been progressively worse.

We all know he is experimental but this just didn't do anything for me,

He wanted to make a pop album, but he didn't want to go the Bro-Country route. My problem is that if I go see him live in March, will it be a pop concert or a Country show? You don't have pigeon hole your music, but any playlist needs good flow. Ie, Luckenbach to Thriller doesn't work for me.

I would bet he plays Sound & Fury in its entirety either to open or close the show. The other half will be a mix of the other stuff.

Just a guess, but Sound & Fury isn't long enough to cover an entire headlining set.

Make Art Not Friends is his best song. I blast it like it's 1998 Dub Miller riding in my old pickup to watch RC Slocum in the concrete cathedral.
