Y'all already know this but if you want a country album listen to Country Squire. That should tide you over until something else comes out.

Thanks for the Childers recommendation. I hadn't heard the album previously and have been really enjoying it.

I'll add that I am not claiming Pearl Jam is not good in their later years. I know tons love them.

For me I love their initial sound and didn't care as much as they evolved into a different sound.

That's what is happening to me with Sturg. His country sound is freaking great. His voice was born for it. But he's evolving into something that is a different crowd than me.

I might have to preorder this one. That cover art and red vinyl is FIRE. Would look great on my wall display of records.

No pic, but it should turn out something like this:

Was a very early fan of Simpson and may have made the first post about him on Ent.

I like Sturgill and will give it a more in depth listen soon. However, the juxtaposition after just finishing the PBS Country Music documentary is jarring. I've spent the last few days listening to Hank and Bob Wills and those johnny-come-latelys, Willie and Waylon. This is definitely something different.

Never listened to anything by Sturgill Simpson, but I'm digging this tune. Will check him out.

Sturgill doesn't give a f***. Album opens with a 3:45 rocking instrumental. 180 turn on this album.

Just listened to the entire album. Gotta admit that I like his older stuff much more. Maybe it will just take a few listens to get used to the sound, but alot of the songs sound about the same. My favorite from the first listen is Mercury in Retrograde.

I'm currently listening to the album -- reminds me of ZZTop

Definitely enjoyed it, though there are a couple songs I wasn't crazy about. Ronin and Fastest Horse In Town are my favorites. Ronin in particular gave me Maggot Brain vibes.

This album reminds me of when Shooter Jennings did the Black Ribbons concept album.

Made some decent headway doing mainly country then went a complete different direction with a psychedelic rock concept album.

Much like that album this album I like and find myself liking it more and more the more I hear.

Just a reminder his accompanying Netflix anime dropped today as well. I got my vinyl in yesterday but I'm gonna wait and watch tonight for my first experience of the album.

I'm pretty excited. It's like his own The Wall

Black Ribbons is a hidden gem. LOVE that album. Need to give the new Sturgill a listen.

I listened through the album today on Spotify. Not bad, certainly not where he started off. I enjoyed the album overall. I'll try to sit down this weekend and watch the show that goes with it.

Love it......5 songs in. But disappointed he didn't do a cover in this album. Really like his takes on other songs.

Late to this thread.

This song is like if you merged ZZ Top and The Cars in the 1980s. Kinda weird but it is growing on me.

Listening to it on a flight with earbuds so not the best way to listen, but I am really digging it. As I stated before, though, my favorite album of his is A Sailor's Guide to Earth, so I love his stuff that is kind of "out there". Dude is greatness!!!

I love Sturgill's country sound but this really kicks a** too. It's all over the place but the album as a whole flows really well. Like a soundtrack to a movie, oh wait...

Listened to the whole thing through twice on my flight and I think it's bad ass! Top to bottom.

Also listened to the Black Ribbons album by Shooter Jennings based on the mentions above. Definitely a cool album. Has some duds but a cool vibe and a few great songs I will keep in the mix.

Thoughts after one listen:

I love the fact that he's willing to push musical boundaries but there's too much synth on this album for my taste. And they vocal effects are a bit overused as well. But I did like it and will listen more. His last album took a bit to grow on me. Maybe this one will too.

I watched the show and I'm not sure I was on the right level to understand it all. Not too bad but some parts were out there. I do think the voice effect they use on his voice is overused.

Listened to it a second time on the commute home.

This is a kick ass rock album. It's awesome!

Sounds to me like a mix of Black Keys, Rob Zombie, and whoever the hottest EDM dude is nowadays. Like Sturgill went on a weeklong bender, jumped in the studio, tried to make an album with as many instruments and sounds as possible, and came out with this gem.

I like it.

I loved High Top Mountain, really enjoyed Metamodern. I thought Sailor's Guide was hit and miss. After the first time I listened to it I never had any real desire to listen start to finish again. But it has its high points -- I love "Sea Stories" and "All Around You."

This latest one seems to be more what he's into these days. Different but has a cool sound.

41 minutes of meh. Not a glaringly bad album, but there isn't a single track on it that I'd go out of my way to listen to again or put on a playlist. Seems like he had 1 too many edibles while recovering from that sinusitis.

I've watched it twice now and I'm flat out obsessed with this album. I absolutely love it, and the anime is awesome. Trippy as hell. Favorite is probably the dancing in A Good Look, but I also love the art and style of Best Clockmaker On Mars.

Song wise I also love Ronin, Remember to Breathe, Mercury in Retrograde. Make Art Not Friends might be my favorite... This will easily be my album of the year.

Love Sturgill and his willingness to experiment. He's never done anything I didn't love, and I'm glad he's doing his thing his way.
