Crash will look back as worthy of a BP win if The Irishman wins.

I'm just hoping they split Picture/Director. I'd love to see either Scorsese or QT get their statue if not their movie.

Though, I feel like this is the year - especially in the past couple of months - the Netflix bias is finally receding a bit. The public, at least, seems to be really into being able to watch The Irishman and Marriage Story at home, on demand, in a way I didn't see with Roma. I also saw The Two Popes earlier this week (which is fantastic, by the way) at The Landmark here in LA, which is now the third Oscar movie I've seen there with a big, bold Netflix spot that plays before hand (embedded below), along with the Netflix logo itself in the opening credits, and you can just feel the audience getting used to seeing that now. In a theater that sees all kinds of Oscar voters in its audience, I hear people talking in the lobby and before movie, re: Netflix, and the tide just feels like it's turning toward Netflix's favor. Granted, yes, the Spielbergs of the world will be holdouts forever, and they still obviously have a ton of sway, but the one-two-three punch of The Irishman, Marriage Story, and The Two Popes feels like its moving the needle in ways that Roma didn't last year. We shall see...

Hopefully the digital release a couple weeks ago, followed by the Blu-ray release this Tuesday, gives it another little surge.

Still waiting for an Irishman to be in this

Turned it off after deniros curb stomping of the grocer
What an embarrassment to acting and film making

Pathetic

Bit late to this discussion, but I'm halfway through the film and honestly not in a rush to finish. There's some interesting scenes and the performances are great, but there's just nothing compelling about this story to me.

I've really enjoyed some other Scorcese films, but this is a ways down the list for me.

I really like this movie and like a lot of others have mentioned I broke it up in to 2 sittings. There were some meandering times that were pretty slow but overall it kept my attention.

finally got around to watching it. i'm in the "good, not great" category.

i loved pesci's performance. these gangster movie roles all start to blend together, so i liked seeing him play russell as almost a polar opposite to nicky or tommy. i thought it was also an effective juxtaposition to pacino's loud, in your face portrayal of hoffa (which i also thought was good).

i honestly expected to have an issue with the length, but i didn't.

I had no problem with the grocery beatdown scene. I guess I can see why others were bothered by it, but it didn't give me pause at all while watching.

Also, it's amazing to me that people exist (and actively post on the entertainment board) who are choosing not to see this critically acclaimed, loaded cast movie because a handful of texags posters didn't like it. It's hard to imagine how a person like that operates in real life.

I like to screw with them by enthusiastically endorsing stuff I hate.

It's more than a handful that don't think its amazing. I definitely don't understand letting other people decide if you see a movie or not, though.

Pacino was good. De Niro's performance was forgettable.

Finally sat down and watched this. I agree with the "good, not great" description as well. I wasn't sure I wanted to sit through a three-and-a-half hour movie, but it was entertaining enough to keep my interest. I'm apparently the only person who doesn't care much for mob movies, but this didn't quite seem to be in the same genre. I think that made me like it more.

I had high expectations for this and OUATIH, and I wasn't really blown away by either one. "The Irishman told an interesting story, but probably needed an hour cut out. OUATIH was more of a collection of good scenes than a great movie.

I'm in my 40s. I got one foot in the grave. I don't have time for mediocre movies. And I don't think Pachino, De Niro, etc. have been all that great for a while. Sorta washed up.

I don't know about washed up, but definitely older. My brother-in-law made a good point when he said that they make some of the cast look younger digitally, but they still look old when they move. It is a distraction.

3/5 - pretty slow, the grocer seen as mentioned was laughably awful. I enjoyed the setting and most of the performances but not interested in a re-watch.

it was good enough.

slow pacing, but that's ok.

not best picture worthy in my opinion.

it was certainly no goodfellas or departed.

Yes, the deep fake version is just a bit too gummy looking, but holy crap it looks so much more age-accurate...

DeNiro needed it the most. I may have said it before, but I really wish there was a way to get this movie done again, but with younger actors for the majority of the story.

Did y'all happen to see "The Irishman: In Conversation" on Netflix? I thought that was interesting hearing them talk about some of these things. Although Scorsese's sense of self importance is nauseating at times.

Finally found the time to watch this one. For about the first 30-45 minutes, I was expecting Goodfellas and Casino, and I was getting disappointed. It felt like I was watching a Lonely Island skit about gangster movies more than a Scorsese mob movie. About an hour in, something flipped and I made my peace with the fact that it wasn't Goodfellas or Casino, and I just kind of sat back and started enjoying it for the period film it was. Then again, I'm one of the few that really, really enjoyed The Aviator.

If you watched it and turned it off because you were disappointed with what Scorsese was putting together, I would recommend giving it another shot and following the serial break down into 4 45-min episodes. It really came together for me about halfway through, and the second half in particular was brilliant. So much so that I want to watch the whole thing again now that I know what kind of movie I'm watching from the jump.

It's not Scorsese's best, but it's a very, very good movie.

Watched it this weekend and though it was very well done. Kept me entertained the entire time. I thought the last 20-30 minutes was a major gut punch - very sobering end to Scorsese's mob movie career. Pacino was great and should receive a Best Supporting Actor nom.

Also, the de-aging was pretty bad, but it didn't ruin the movie for me. Once I realized that I had no idea what age DeNiro was supposed to be by looking at him, I was okay. He looked about 50 when he's the "kid" driving the truck, and 55-60 when his kids are young. I'm glad that I had seen the curb stomping scene on twitter beforehand, so I knew that it was going to be laughably bad. I actually thought he looked youngest when he's at the banquet, though I think that was actually what he looks like now?

Woof. What a snoozefest. Goodfellas was 5 times the movie at 2/3rd the runtime.
