I absolutely HATE how so many people on this thread bash the hard-working Twitter people out there. Are some of them idiots? Sure, but most of them are hard-working people who have the incredible passion to let everyone in the world know their every thought, feeling, fart, and meal. These people suffer from the occasional bout of carpal tunnel syndrome so they can be the first to tell you things like "Oh damn, what a burrito", "Rian Johnson raped my chldhood's adulthood", and "Taylor Swift is too skinny". So the next time you all decide that you can just bash Twitter people, realize that without them, nobody would be able to tell you that Jimbo Fisher's contract is too long, or that Kellen Mond has regressed, or that BB8's arc is really lame.

Just realized this is the first time I'll be going to an opening night Star War since I saw a Midnight showing of The Phantom Menace at the Bryan Mall!
Bryan has a mall?
Manor East Mall had a 3 screen theater back then.

So if Spilner is gone for real, we're presented with a real opportunity here. Logically he won't post again until he sees the movie opening night and then posts in the spoiler thread, which gives us time to decide:

1) We all act like we thought he died.

2) We all act like we have no idea who is he and constantly question his SW credential opinions and treat him like he just signed up for TexAgs.

Open to other options.

How are the theaters looking as far as attendance for those that have gone?

I remember for TLJ I decided kind of last minute to pull my kids out of school and go see a matinee. I remember a lot of them being sold out and having trouble finding enough seats together to sit my family.

I am again deciding last minute (based on comments that this movie is a F-U to TLJ) and the theaters are wide open.

Wonder if this movie will be the opposite of TLJ, weak opening weekend (for star wars) but stronger hold as word of mouth gets out that it's a good movie for actual star wars fans?

I think I saw somewhere that it hit $44m yesterday. Our theater was completely full for the 6pm showing and I reckon this one will do better than TLJ with repeat viewings and word of mouth.

I'm on the way to the IMAX showing at the MarqE 23 in Houston with my nerd brigade. We've seen all the prequels and sequels together. So ready to see this movie!!!

We've made plans to discuss in depth the results of JJs efforts on RoSW at Twin Peaks post viewing. So winning regardless today.

Surprised anyone could have high expectations going into this movie.
If people go in expecting the originals, they will never be satisfied. But if they go in looking to be entertained and continue what started in TFA, they will enjoy TROS.

I think JJ does a great job of wrapping it up and tapping into the spirit of the originals and handling the character arcs of TFA...with more of the tone we saw from TFA.

IMO I think there's more of the "adventure factor" that wowed us in the originals...completely different from TLJ in that regard. I think there was a real effort here for the fans.

I laughed, a lot. I got choked up a few times. And even though it's easy to say "Yeah we've seen this before" with the new Star Wars films...there were elements to this one that gave me those 'wow!' moments all over again. Whereas in the TLJ, I didn't have that...outside of the lightspeed kamikaze scene.

Well, I really enjoyed it. Of course, I've loved every Star Wars movie as I've left the theater. It's only later that I realized a few maybe weren't that great. But I really did like this one! Some great moments, even if one or two were predictable. Good story.

People like to decry fan service, but I thought that what there was in TROS fit well.

I love Star Wars! Guess I should start the Mandalorian now.

Won't hear that from me. Look back at the prequels as an example. The only parts of that entire trilogy that remotely worked (at least for me) were the fan service moments.

TFA... full of fan service with Han and badass moments with new characters. TLJ... yeah, not so much. From where I'm sitting, it's pretty obvious what they had to do with this movie. Screw the reviews and everything else, this is the conclusion of a saga, their ONLY goal should have been to make the fans smile, cry, & cheer.

In 7 hours I'll see how they did.

It was a good movie, but like the first two, I don't think the replay value is there. With TFA and TLJ, I didn't like them nearly as much as I did in the theater. I think these movies are good theater experiences, but they are not necessarily good movies. The original trilogy was a well written story and very well made movies. I can watch them all over and over again. These have some cool special effects and interesting fighting scenes, but only entertaining on the surface. The story and characters are all kind of meh.

Fan service in and of itself isn't bad. Fan service done well is amazing (see Darth Vader go ham on a hallway full of redshirts). It's just too often fan service is lazily employed and doesn't have the intended weight. It's like when Acie Law missed a wide open layup that would have just about sealed a Sweet Sixteen win...when it should be easy, failing makes it feel even worse.

Completely understand what you are saying and agree. But I'll admit I'm an easy target going into tonight...even lazy fan service will probably have me cheering. Anything that redeems the Luke they gave us in TLJ I'll be OK with.

Glad most on the thread agree that this movie delivers the goods. My expectations could not have been lower. I walked in not giving a crap about Rey, Poe, Finn, Kylo, etc. Somehow this movie not only entertained me on a basic level (unlike TLJ) but also drew me to the characters and made me care about them and want to see more of them. I thought this would be impossible given how bland the characters were until now. Not only is the movie good in its own right but it somehow found a way to salvage this trilogy which I had written off a long time ago as a lost cause.

OK, calling my shots (crazy fanboy theories):

1. We will see Luke in a form other than typical force ghost. Maybe not exactly flesh & blood, but something else and he will have a physical role to play. "That's not how the Force works"... It is now!!!

2. Force Ghost Anakin will show up. At a guess, it's him and his son's job to take out Palps for good. Rey is no match and her fight is with Kylo.

3. Rey is not a Skywalker clone... TROS refers to Luke & Anakin directly.

4. Ben Solo will be redeemed

True... sorry, didn't mean to temp anybody! Please do not respond one way or another to my post, I'm simply placing my bet.

In the meantime, however, I'm listening to the soundtrack for the first time. Man, John really nailed this one. I honestly haven't paid too much attention to the music int 7 & 8. I probably took it for granted, but this one is really really good.

EDIT: LOL, ok, the soundtrack is more spoilerish than I thought. The song titles aren't that bad, but certain pieces of music interject certain characters theme's at interesting moments. Hmmm.

my son wanted to go last night and there were still seats available at our local theater at 8:30, 9:30, 10:30 and a lot at the 11 PM show. We ended up not going bc he had work until 9 and I didn't want to be out until 1:30 and have to wake up for work at 6....yeah I'm old.

The number of trailers got a little ridiculous before the movie. From what I remember we had (Katy Mills Dolby Cinema):
Dolittle
Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar
No Time to Die
Top Gun Maverick
Tenet
Black Widow
Mulan
Free Guy
Onward

Just remembered, Bad Boys for Life was also shown. 10 ******* trailers, I almost wanted to boo

Back from a lunchtime Drafthouse showing (an official office outing which was kinda cool) and I'm pretty happy with it.

There's a few things I didn't like, but it does a solid job wrapping up our major characters and plot points and definitely felt like a Star Wars film. The humor landed well and it looks fantastic, and I enjoyed Rey's story in this in particular.

I have never seen so much b*tching about having to watch movie trailers, of all things. Give me *all* the movie trailers, please. There are few things better than seeing a bunch of big-name trailers, in a theater, with an amped audience on opening weekend. Besides, this is one of the biggest event movies of the year. Of course theaters are going to use this opportunity to advertise as much of their product as possible to packed house after packed house.

I used to agree but it's become ridiculous. 30 minutes of trailers?

They should post the movie time and the ACTUAL movie time on the websites so we know. I tried to time it but still had to sit through 15 minutes of trailers.

I was actually disappointed we didn't get Tenet. Did get to see Bond and WW1984 though so that was a plus (though if they don't have a really great reason for bringing Steve Trevor back I'm gonna be seriously annoyed).

Which theater chain?

I admit, I've never sat through 10 trailers before, but six to eight is fairly consistent at the AMC I go to every so often, and I don't mind it at all. Otherwise, the two theaters I frequent are usually a strict three trailers per showing and that's it.

That sucks. Good thing is, the Tenet trailer will be playing through April, until the new trailer likely hits in May.

When I was a kid I thought trailers were the best part about going to the movies and I rarely wanted them to end and have the actual movie start.

But that was in a day when you didn't get all the trailers online and you often saw a trailer for a movie you had never heard of and you could get excited for it just based on the trailer. Now everything is available online for the most part, to the point where people complain when they try and do a theater only experience and not release something online like the Tenet teaser earlier this year.

So trailers are no longer a special theater thing, there are few new surprises unless you are at an independent film, and they just keep adding more and more before the movie plays (plus commercials. I've done a complete 180 on them.

True, but I don't think the "surprise" element is the only thing that makes them fun/special. Even if I've seen them all online, just seeing them on the big screen with an audience makes them worth seeing them again, IMO.

I think my showing saw:

Dolittle
James Bond
WW84
Mulan
Onward
Tenet
Black Widow
Top Gun

So at least 8. Plus the car commercial

The bladder becomes a ticking timebomb during a 145 min movie, I do not need 10 trailers to push the limit. 3 or 4 big name trailers and stop

BTW, the Barb and Star trailer tricked me into thinking we were getting movie based on the video game Paperboy
