What do those B-29s unloading hell on Japanese targets have to do with the sucktitude that is TLJ?

Dumb on so many levels.

I'm still confused that the Resistance "fleet" consisted of these stupid bombers, their flagship, a corvette ship and a medical frigate. What a sorry ass "fleet".

Are you sure about that?

Coming soon to a Star Wars movie near you...

Those are the dumbest ships in star wars. Slow moving... no shields... Didn't one tie fight crash into 2 and take them both down.
Then in an era of spaceships, lasers and planet destroying weapons it has to drop bombs in space.
Ok. Please go back to what many believe to be the best of all the Star Wars movies (and some, like me, believe to be the best movie ever made), The Empire Strikes Back, and let me know what you think of that brief shot in the asteroid field when TIE Bombers are dropping - oh my - bombs in an effort to draw out the Millennium Falcon ...

Did anyone else think that Luke's shot from his X-Wing to take down the first Death Star was just a bit ridiculous - anyone ever seen torpedoes do a 90degree drop into a hole?

Point is, there have always been things in these movies that, if given the criticism that the TLJ bomber sequence has received, should have sunk the very first movie. I say that as one who finds TLJ to be the worst of all the Star Wars movies, by far. The original trilogy was far better than the sequel trilogy has been, but the OT still had moments that, if people were fair, would receive similar criticism that these sequels have (or the prequels as well).

Of all my complaints of TLJ, this sequence does not even rank. Well, I guess it features a bombadier who is the sister of the worst character in any Star Wars movie.

The idea of a bomber being used against terrestrial targets like an asteroid isn't too much of a reach, even in Star Wars. However, using them in three dimensional space combat in a slow moving formation is dumb as ****. Hell its dumb as **** on earth in the 21st century.

The music is so great when they call in the bombers in TLJ, and then 2 minutes later, I'm like.... WTF, why did they bring these things to the party?

I believe the TLJ bomber's target was far, far larger than those asteroids.

Ah, but those were proton torpedoes, which of course are capable of doing a 90 degree turn.

They should have just hyperspaced those bombers into the new order... was a suicide mission anyways right?

fair point about the ESB Bombers. I still think no shields on big slow ships is dumb and it was basically a suicide mission for them.... and maybe it was. I'll start to think of it this way regardless of intent (i'm really a starwars sunshine pumper).
G Martin 87

The use of TIE Bombers in ESB is not a good counter argument. In ESB, the target (the MF) was not visible. Indirect fire was used to try to force the MF out of hiding. That mission and choice of weapon platform at least makes some sense. In TLJ, the HUGE target was right in front of them. Missiles are faster and harder to shoot down than bombers, I'm sure you'll agree.

Anyway, this has all been hashed out before. It was a dumb strategy then and remains dumb now. Get ready for more dumb military strategic errors on both sides in ROS. Charging the Empire on horseback? Oh, boy, can't wait for that.

I feel like if you're dissecting the battle tactics of Star Wars then you've lost your way already. None of these movies are exactly case studies for how space war is going to look.

The bombers were the least of the issues with TLJ. But the first thing I said they appeared was "WTF were these bombers at Star Killer Base" in TFA? How much easier would they have made that whole sequence. If you think about it, Han would still be alive b/c there would be no need for them to set the explosives inside.

But the bombs can only be dropped by remote switch by an unseated bombardier...went down hill after that for sure?

One week from tonight. That's the LA/World premiere - Monday, December 16th - which critics also attend. We should start seeing reactions around 10 PM Pacific that night and I'll post them as always.

These are interesting for event movies such as this one. Surely everyone at the premiere buys the hype unless the movie's terrible, right? In other words, universal praise doesn't really mean anything, and anything less than that indicates it's likely a stinker. Does that seem accurate?
