I'm sure toxic fandom is real. Anyone that crosses the line into real life and harasses an actor or director or something bc of a movie is a nut, and I agree with TCTTS on that count.

But bashing a pretend character in a make believe world is not toxic fandom, no matter how over the top. If an actor is suicidal bc people don't like a character he played, then he needs to just stay off the internet and count his money.

Once again, I'm not saying don't bash the character. It's not either "HAVE EMPATHY" - or - "BASH THE CHARACTER." I've said it a dozen times before, but I'll say it again - it's more gray and nuanced than that. ALL I was asking is to be mindful of when the bashing crosses the line into the kind of gross, utter disdain that comes close to bleeding into "toxic fandom" territory, if even peripherally. I dislike Rose too. And I wish Rian Johnson wouldn't have written her the way he did. But there's just no need to go on for months and months and months about all the ways I wish her character would die, and all the terrible things that should be done to her in Episode IX, etc. especially when those kind of sentiments - as a whole - ultimately contributed to Kelly Marie Tran leaving social media (and Ahmed Best contemplating suicide). I just don't understand why anyone would want to even remotely share the same sentiments/language/hate that those psychos had in attacking her. And yes, I get that *Stating Those Thoughts on TexAgs* doesn't equal *Hitting Up Kelly Marie Tran's Instagram Comments.* But they DO share a lot of the same language and sentiments.

Also, this "stay offline and count their money" attitude is such bullsh*t and such a gross misunderstanding of the situation, it's pretty clear why you think the way you do. Actors like Ahmed Best and Kelly Marie Tran fret about paying the bills same as you and me. They're not even remotely rich. The vast majority of actors aren't, even the perceived "successful" ones. Just because they're "famous" doesn't mean they're incredibly well off or have entered this echelon of existence where they've been relieved of day-to-day worries, can sit back, and have nothing better to do than "count their money." The "It comes with the territory" sentiment is such crap too. What if your chosen profession came with the caveat, "I know you love doing [X], and are good enough to make money doing it, but just FYI, millions of people might very treat you like sh*t online if you so choose to follow that passion/skill"? Yes, ultimately you're the one making the decision to enter into that situation, unforced, but just because someone chooses to act, they should ALSO have to have a bullet proof ego AND "stay offline"? Do you realize how nuts THAT sounds?

Ha, believing those things is on par with believing the National Enquirer. I've seen multiple interviews where actors have laughed about how much the internet has their "net worth" valued at, they wish they had that much, etc. Those things aren't even remotely accurate unless you're talking about someone who's business dealings, investments, etc have all been made pretty public.

I hope you're wrong. I don't like how TLJ treated Like and if there's a WHOLE SLEW of students who left the academy, that's an even more thorough failure of Luke. I'd much rather have Kylo have killed all the students.

For the record the worst Jedi were the three wastes of midichorlians (had to google that) that went with Sam Jackson to take out Paplatine. They made it all of about six seconds against a geriatric limey with the muscle mass of, well, a geriatric limey.

I feel like the difference in this scenario is we were supposed to like/root for her character. Whereas a Joffrey(GoT) or Skyler(Breaking Bad) you are intended to dislike their characters...Joffrey moreso, Skyler is just supposed to be more of the wet blanket ruining a good time.

They clearly missed the boat with the script, and I honestly wonder what he was thinking with her whole story arc.

The only other role I thought he was good in was Life as House, and in retrospect I'm not sure how much acting he was doing. He's not very good in any movie he has been in.

For the record, I don't really believe that movie made Luke out to be the worst. It did turn him into a pretty big failure, though.

It's not even that people need to "get over" their hate of TLJ, Rose, or whatever else. I despise the prequels, I don't like TLJ, and, well... Rose is obviously Rose. I guess what it comes down to, for me at least, is that I just wish people knew how to better voice their frustration. I still love talking about about the flaws in the prequels or TLJ when it leads to discussion of WHY they're bad HOW they could have been made to be better. That's fun, invigorating, and more often than not, constructive. But all these Idiocracy-level, "Rian Johnson bad!" / "Rose die!" comments, at this point, are like digital sharts that continually stain these threads. They're just sooo lame and sh*tty and simple and it makes this place feel like a third grade classroom from time to time. And I know not everyone's a professional critic, but we're not all elementary students either. There are simply better, more constructive ways to express dislike of something than dropping in and typing curt, crude, mean-spirited posts about people who didn't give you exactly what you wanted for Chirstmas.

Spilner posted a pretty great video (below) in the other SW thread yesterday that really summed up why the Finn/Rose storyline was so terrible. It made me realize that it's almost not even Rose who's terrible (though she is), it's mostly the way Finn is written, and how Rose then has to play off/compliment his bad writing. The thing about there being no conflict between them really resonates, compared to the same general plot line in Empire between Han and Leia. As in, there's CONFLICT between Han and Leia throughout, which keeps that story line engaging. But with Finn and Rose, after a somewhat rocky start, everything between them is... rose(s)... ironically causing Rose to be more annoying than less, had she and Finn truly been at odds throughout their journey. As is, her point of view becomes all about cheesily telling and explaining rather than organically coming about through argument. And I think we'd all respect/like her more had she not been such an explainer, and instead was given the opportunity to constantly react to someone else's point of view rather than always pontificating her point of view. I'm curious to see, in Episode IX, if given the proper opportunity to be a character and not the human embodiment of the "moral of the story," she'll be more tolerable...

It was brought up that Rose's suckitude as a character was more about her writing than anything else. The points were good the video made. One thing stuck out to me, and that was the Hamill clip.

He mentioned that RJ was basically, "eff what the audience wants, this is my story." I understand the sentiment, but this is Star wars. A franchise most of is have a deep emotional investment in. No, don't take a poll about what we want, but honoring the legacy is something that should be done.

Like has been said before, what he did with TLJ was COMPLETELY make TFA and TLJ irrelevant for storytelling purposes. That's not ideal for the 3rd movie in a trilogy.

Hamil elaborated and said that RJ said they could do the opposite of what the fans want to tell the story.

This is my biggest issue with TLJ, it's that it's so jarring when watched after TFA. You can tell RJ intentionally did the opposite of what is expected but he did it just to be unpredictable rather than where the story led him.
