Like the movie. Not in the top 5, though.

This article definitely isn't for everyone, and I even skimmed parts of it, but at the very least it's further analysis/insight that makes me appreciate the film more than I did...

Lived up to the hype for me. Complex themes, likeable characters, incredible world and lore, multi-dimensional villain, great action, and gorgeous to look at.

As a comic book movie, it's top 5 easily. Maybe top 3.

As social commentary, nothing about it was overstated and egregious; the themes really aren't that different from any of the X-Men movies (the dynamics of power imbalance) or the last Captain America (two sides of the same team firmly believing they are right in their opposing stances).

Some of the lines were cringey and, as mentioned, the first two acts were stronger than the third. That's about it.

Didn't click on the link, but Do The Right Thing was about as nuanced as a runaway freight train. But that was what made it good.

I felt that it more than lived up to the hype.
Might check it out again. Sequel should be interesting.

Really looking forward to Infinity War.

just saw it. enjoyed it, but it was one of the weaker MCU films IMO.

I thought Klaue was wasted. Briefly introduced in Civil War, then just thrown away part way into BP as a bargaining chip. Was hoping that he would keep turning up like a bad penny. Other than Loki, the MCU is full of throw-away villains. I would've liked to have seen him pop up now and again.

throw away villains?

"Excuse me?!"

Totally agree. I was concerned going in that they would possibly beat the audience over the head with it, but I thought it was fine and everything flowed very well with the story line.

A big negative for me was our movie theater lamp was on the way out. There was massive amount of vignetting and the contrast ratio was so bad that in dark scenes you couldn't make out anything. Told the folks running the show, but they said nothing they could do.

My theater did not laugh very much outside of when the car blew up and the driver skidded across the road. The rhinos at the end we're pretty lame. Serkis was badass, but too bad he didn't get to do more than he did.

How the hell do you take that to mean "kill everyone that isn't black"?

I don't share his gripe because, as mentioned, it was the villain's plan, but in the conversation in the throne room, one of the characters said they needed to send out weapons because they wanted to be the "conquerors, not the conquered."

So, once again, that equals "kill all the white people"?

The point is, who cares?

The Red Skull was a Nazi, who's ultimate goal was to exterminate all other races. Did the guy have the same problem then?

It's a super villain. His logic, or lack thereof, is what makes him evil.

Are y'all really this scared of armed black people? Do you take armed white people to mean "kill all the blacks!"? I'm not trying to take the conversation to this place, but how can I not when you take the film saying they want to arm their people to literally mean "kill all the white people". What other logical conclusion is there?

Would agree with just about all of this. I think it stands shoulder to shoulder with the Iron Man and Captain America films. Great job of formally introducing the character and his world, giving us so much more than what we initially learned about him in Civil War.

For those still clinging to RT audience score as a reliable source, I'd recommend you go peruse the first several pages of the audience reviews. Out of the 20 or so low star reviews I saw in the first few pages, about 90% of them haven't even seen the film. The other 10% gave, at most, a single sentence as their review.

I also see the usual "bad CGI" being trotted out...maybe some folks need to get their eyes checked, or watch the film in a better quality theater. Looked awesome to me. Unless it's just because they don't like CGI, then I guess you might want to realize you're watching a comic book movie.

No, because armed white people bled to save black people from tyranny.

You seem awfully sensitive.

Killmonger didn't say "kill all white people." If we're arguing over whether that specific statement was made, I give. You win.

But he was clearly motivated by revenge for past unjust treatment of blacks. And that revenge was going to come through armed conflict in which he aimed to be the "conqueror". From context, the "conquered" in this scenario seemed, clearly, to be whites.

I am not criticizing the movie for this. But not understanding why some want to avoid seeing something that was clearly there.

I like how I'm the sensitive one when you guys are the ones projecting a white genocide onto a movie.

Self awareness is as on point as comprehension, I guess.

I thought it was pretty simple that he wanted to fight back using the tools he had been given by the military to make Wakanda the superior nation in the world since they already had the technology aid. He wanted to assassinate people with the war boys and carry out attacks to cripple other countries from the inside. I don't think he cared if the people he killed were white or black as he was obviously very willing to kill any Wakandans who stood in his way.

Nothing about what he said was directed at white people specifically or left black people out. The only way to see that is to project what you feel onto it.

One of his very first lines in the movie was to taunt the (white) museum curator about how her "ancestors" got the African relics. And his last line in the movie was about wanting to buried at sea to be with his ancestors who jumped off slave ships. I just don't see how you can watch that movie and conclude Killmonger wasn't motivated by racial animus.

And I'm not even objecting to it. I just don't understand why we have to pretend that racial animus wasn't an element of the bad guy's motivation when it obviously was.

Anyway, I enjoyed the movie but, at this point, talking about it is less than enjoyable. Good night.

********SPOILERS*******

The action sequences with the Queensguard (I couldn't quite catch the word they used for them) were slick. I fell in love with Danai Gurira (Queensguard General) and Leticia Weight (BPs Sister). Oh and the soundtrack was badass. Almost every scene was scored really really well.

But overall I was left a bit wanting. The CGI was god awful at times (Rhinos and BP suit primarily), and quite frankly was way over used. Specifically, why do studios continue to animate hero suits? It's horrendous when BP was running in the open field without his helmet and it looked like a floating head. I wish they would stick to more practical effects.

The dialogue was a big weakness. I got the themes - Sins of the father don't dictate the future of the son/Unity/Hate beats Love/etc...but the dialogue itself felt like one rushed cliche to the next. It certainly didn't do Michael B Jordan any favors. For the most part I felt like his delivery and cadence was just terrible (although he was nails in the finale when he was talking about his father promising to show him Wakanda). Also, the (attempted) humor was just not very good. The "sneakers" joke was clever until you realize that BP never actually needed to be stealthy. They literally forced that dad joke in for no reason (but I can forgive it because Leticia Wright was awesome). Just the humor in general a bit....forced? Or superficial? I will say, the political dig at the end about great leaders building bridges and not barriers was a poingnant one. Like I said, I loved the over arching themes and character motivations. I just felt like the Xs and Os of the dialogue wasn't up to par.

EDIT: Also, I'm sick of the overt product placement. That whole car chase scene was 1 massive Toyota advertisement. I understand it's the cost of doing business and a superficial criticism, but whatever. This is my opinion and my review lol.

I thought this movie compares most closely with Spider-Man: Homecoming. It's a smaller scale than most of the recent Marvel stuff and relatively self contained. I don't understand the love for the villain. Michael B. Jordan was good but this was the same "bad version of the superhero" that people seem to hate from Marvel (Ant-Man, Cap2: Winter Soldier, Iron Man, Hulk).

Good movie, anyone saying it breaks Marvel's formula doesn't understand Marvel's formula.
