I still don't fully grasp the import of basic as a popular adjective in recent times.
I'd actually be curious to hear elaboration on that. To me the idea of an undiscovered hyper technological country debating their involvement in world affairs while their super powered monanarch fights off revolution from his cousin who's father was killed by the previous super powered monarch was rather unique.

Tongue in cheek, to an extent, but I could almost see a bit of The Lion King or maybe a Shakespeare drama.

A dead king, a prince in turmoil, a usurper, a kingdom at a crossroads. Redemption, the rise of a new and confident king.

You guys really don't get the difference between the MCU and Fox Marvel movies, do you?

It boiled down to a family squabble between cousins. Maybe that's why I see the parallel with Thor. All the technology and whether to share it was secondary and has been done plenty. Stark tech, SHIELD tech, etc...all hyper advanced and could be shared. So what? Amazing technology is a given in a movie like this. Felt like a stale topic for me

Good casting choices generally. I think it's easy to enjoy movies that are pretty well made and fun, even without an amazing plotline.

That awkward moment when the guy sitting behind you in the theatre is audibly agreeing with every other Killmonger line. "THATS RIGHT", "HE AIN'T LYIN'", "TELL 'EM", "TRUTH!"

Oh I've already seen articles about how black people should start "barking" at white people when they talk out of turn.

That just seems like a gross oversimplification to me.

Star Wars was a story about a family squabble between a dad and a son. Raiders of the Lost Ark was a guy looking for a box. Etc.

Almost every story is a variant on The Hero's Journey. The cultural, societal, and technological implications are what made BP really interesting.

I'm glad you enjoyed it so much. I thought it wasn't that great. Again, probably due to the overhyping machine.

I thought that ultimately they had a really good story on their hands, and sort of relented to a basic kind of superhero movie in the end. I still enjoyed it just because I thought the cast was stellar and Wakanda was very cool.

Fair enough, it's definitely tough for films that get that hyped to live up to expectations.

I know I'm an awful person, but I've had no interest in seeing this one in a theater.

Black Panther is following Last Jedi's box office trajectory almost identically in the US.

That is impressive.

And to think, while fans may see it as a competition, everything ends up in hands of Disney.

And then Infinity War and Solo.

They have to break the studio record for the year, right?

Infinity War is definitely going to crush any and all box office numbers. Preorders, opening weekends, anything.

You would think.

2016 - 3 B

Top Movies
Finding Dory
Rogue One (First few weekends)
Civil War
Jungle Book
Zootopia
The Force Awakens (3rd or 4th weekend on)
Dr Strange
Moana

On a related note, the MCU just passed 14 B.

I will go with it not topping TFA.

I think it could top TFA's opening weekend. But total domestic will not come close.

Maybe $650M.

When you boil everything down, aren't we all just looking for a box? (preferably a newer, small one)

That's why nothing will ever top Raiders

I thought of Lion King a lot in this movie, especially in the scene where T'Challa speaks to his father.

And to be honest, it got me even more excited for the Lion King movie. That looked beautiful.

So the family had tickets for the early showing last Saturday morning. I was genuinely excited for the movie. Then I got a 5am phone call resulting in a fast-as-hell trip from Katy to Conroe to be with my dad. He passed at 7:55 that morning. RIP Dad.

My wife was able to get our local theater to swap our 2/17 tickets to today. I've been going through the motions all week. Watched all of the Cap movies during the week. Loved all of those but just never got enthused about BP. Now that I've seen BP, I'm still just not that enthused. I'm not saying it was a bad movie. It just did nothing for me. If I was going to rank it right now, it would likely place somewhere in the bottom 5, but I am not going to rank it at this time. Not really fair to what I think was a well made movie.

Some of the sequences between BP and his dad resonated with me. I really liked the look of the movie. I did comment to my wife that the underside of his airplane looked like its designer must have been looking at a three-headed electric shaver when (s)he came up with that. On the negative side, I was actually bored with the movie up until the South Korea sequence. I liked Killmonger's back story but as far as him being a great villain, I'd say he doesn't even crack the top 5 (for me, Thanos, Loki, Winter Soldier, Red Skull, Civil War villain).

I probably won't see this again until I get the BluRay.
