Not looking for spoilers, but is it known what other Marvel characters will appear in this? From the trailers I haven't seen anyone, but some of them were with Black Panther the last time we saw him.
Also worth noting that Bad Boys was a breakout hit, was Bay's first directorial feature and Will Smith's first big film role.TCTTS said:No way on Shaft/Pootie Tang. MAYBE Bad Boys, but I'm talking more of a proper blockbuster with heavy special effects, heavy action, mythology, a prominently black cast, etc. None of the above fit that criteria.Cibalo said:how quickly we forget about Shaft, Bad Boys, and Pootie TangTCTTS said:

You're trying awfully hard to carry the water to make this "first" to be a huge successTCTTS said:No way on Shaft/Pootie Tang. I have no info but I think you can expect a cameo. Cap seems like the obvious choice.
However, if a film is going to break that mold and skip it, BP seems like it would be the one.
Those are the only two I'd think could happen. But I don't think anyone will. This will be a stand alone like the original origin films from phase 1AgMarauder04 said:Or Winter Soldier.AliasMan02 said:amercer said:

I bet you see it a lot more. Look at the last few years....TCTTS said:
I really don't think I am. Besides, I'm just repeating the same facts dozens of outlets/pundits/journalists have been as of late as well. No one's making anything up here to create some false narrative. This is, without a doubt, the first time a blockbuster/franchise/tentpole movie has simultaneously A) catered to a black audience while B) featuring a primarily black cast. Sure, Bad Boys and Nutty Professor and other big movies of that ilk have kind of done the same, but never even remotely on this scale, and with a black cast this expansive. I'm not trying to drum anything up here. If only from a box office standpoint, this is extremely interesting to me. How often in modern movie going do we get to see something like this play out? Where a massive, underserved audience is getting something they (and we) have never had before? I'm just so curious to see what happens opening weekend.
likely the last movie to do this and get away with it relatively unscathedwangus12 said:
That being said, let's be honest...every blockbuster is a shameless cash grab and pandering to a certain demographic is part of the business and, frankly, smart as long as you can do it without alienating other demos.TCTTS said:
I think you're right. There's definitely a trend happening now, and hopefully it does just lead to a plethora of fun blockbusters without any of the social/racial/gender commentary that currently accompanies them.
The white Hollywood peeps do seem a little overly excited imo. This movie does look awesome from the previews. I can deal with some preachy racial sh** if the movie truly is awesome...this movie may very well avoid all that. But I take some of these epic reviews from Hollywood left with a grain of salt. Maybe it's not virtue signaling...maybe I've just become jaded by social media and the constant virtue signaling we are exposed to...but a lot of it comes across as "look how enlightened and tolerant I am everyone look!!!". That's how I read a lot of those tweets.TCTTS said:
I mean, I guess I can see how that comes off, but I really just think they're genuinely excited. At least that's the feeling I'm getting.
This. I'm pulling for the movie. I want it to be awesome. If it inspires young black kids or adults, all the better. Something just feels "forced" from a lot of the white Hollywood crowd. I could be wrong, but I think we have plenty of reason to be skeptical these days.Brian Earl Spilner said:
I think that's what bugs me more than anything. It seems more like the people up-top patting themselves on the back for making this movie, than the black community actually embracing this movie in an "organic" way.
Call me crazy, but the need to target a specific market for a Star Wars movie in order to drum up excitement might not be as important a strategy for that particular franchise.Brian Earl Spilner said:
For example, I think The Force Awakens was handled perfectly. The main character was a woman, but they didn't market it as some sort of female empowerment thing that would turn the tides in Hollywood. (At least that I noticed.)
It was just a Star Wars movie, and that was it. And a pretty damn good one.
Now, if women embraced the movie and felt empowered by it, that should be a nice byproduct of making a great movie with a female lead character. It shouldn't be the main hook in the marketing. (This is what sort of soured me on Wonder Woman, aside from the fact that it was just a bland movie overall.)

As a white person, I'm "overly" excited about it because it just looks like it is going to be a gorgeous movie and we haven't seen anything quite like it yet.
Plus, the character has been awesome, Chad Bosewick is hot, the action looks incredible and it's going to lead into IW. What wouldn't I be excited about this?
As dad to a daughter who was 9 when TFA came out, I can damn well tell you there was no marketing to her vis-a-vis Rey. Christmas that year found action figures like Kylo Ren under the tree, but there was no figure for Rey available except as an add-on in some vehicle set.Brian Earl Spilner said:

That was actually a criticism of the merch for the film, Rey wasn't marketing as a primary character in the toys.Cinco Ranch Aggie said:As dad to a daughter who was 9 when TFA came out, I can damn well tell you there was no marketing to her vis-a-vis Rey. I don't know why, but I think this movie is going to be a major disappointment; plot and acting wise that is.
