Not looking for spoilers, but is it known what other Marvel characters will appear in this? From the trailers I haven't seen anyone, but some of them were with Black Panther the last time we saw him.

how quickly we forget about Shaft, Bad Boys, and Pootie Tang
No way on Shaft/Pootie Tang. MAYBE Bad Boys, but I'm talking more of a proper blockbuster with heavy special effects, heavy action, mythology, a prominently black cast, etc. None of the above fit that criteria.
Also worth noting that Bad Boys was a breakout hit, was Bay's first directorial feature and Will Smith's first big film role.

If the interwebz are correct that was made on a $19 million budget, even adjusted for inflation that doesn't sniff the ballpark of Black Panther.

I have no info but I think you can expect a cameo. Cap seems like the obvious choice.

However, if a film is going to break that mold and skip it, BP seems like it would be the one.

You're trying awfully hard to carry the water to make this "first" to be a huge success

Those are the only two I'd think could happen. But I don't think anyone will. This will be a stand alone like the original origin films from phase 1

I really don't think I am. Besides, I'm just repeating the same facts dozens of outlets/pundits/journalists have been as of late as well. No one's making anything up here to create some false narrative. This is, without a doubt, the first time a blockbuster/franchise/tentpole movie has simultaneously A) catered to a black audience while B) featuring a primarily black cast. Sure, Bad Boys and Nutty Professor and other big movies of that ilk have kind of done the same, but never even remotely on this scale, and with a black cast this expansive. I'm not trying to drum anything up here. If only from a box office standpoint, this is extremely interesting to me. How often in modern movie going do we get to see something like this play out? Where a massive, underserved audience is getting something they (and we) have never had before? I'm just so curious to see what happens opening weekend.

I'll be honest, this really does feel like the media and/or studio is trying really hard to push this as some sort of black "breakthrough" movie, or whatever, and it just seems like they're trying way too hard. That Kendrick Lamar tweet about the album, Octavia Spencer renting out a whole theater, that kind of thing.

It almost feels like they want to replicate or capitalize on what Get Out did last year, except that happened organically, and this feels manufactured.

I don't know, it just feels a bit cheap to me. I realize I'll get blasted for saying it, but that's kind of where I am right now.

I bet you see it a lot more. Look at the last few years....

Wonder Woman
Ghostbusters reboot
Black Panther
Ocean's 8

All movies SPECIFICALLY marketed at, to use your term because I can't think of a better one, "underserved" populations. I think we are going to see more and more of this and tbh, I really look forward to the day where no one cares. I just want to be entertained, and I don't care about the makeup of the cast and crew and want the media to STFU about it.

People are happy/excited for a movie. I don't understand why this bothers people. Let people be happy about a movie.

I think you're right. There's definitely a trend happening now, and hopefully it does just lead to a plethora of fun blockbusters without any of the social/racial/gender commentary that currently accompanies them.

One of the cameos has been leaked, at least from the post-credits scene.

That being said, let's be honest...every blockbuster is a shameless cash grab and pandering to a certain demographic is part of the business and, frankly, smart as long as you can do it without alienating other demos.

At first I had a real issue with the practice, but then realized it just makes sense and as a hetero white male, I've had the benefit of the primary audience for years without taking special note of it.

The white Hollywood peeps do seem a little overly excited imo. This movie does look awesome from the previews. I can deal with some preachy racial sh** if the movie truly is awesome...this movie may very well avoid all that. But I take some of these epic reviews from Hollywood left with a grain of salt. Maybe it's not virtue signaling...maybe I've just become jaded by social media and the constant virtue signaling we are exposed to...but a lot of it comes across as "look how enlightened and tolerant I am everyone look!!!". That's how I read a lot of those tweets.

And to the person who seemed to imply that I was racist for hoping the movie wasn't a bunch of race baiting...that's rich...tell my brown skinned wife what a racist I am.

I think that's what bugs me more than anything. It seems more like the people up-top patting themselves on the back for making this movie, and sort of "forcing" this narrative, than the black community actually embracing this movie in an "organic" way.

Maybe I'm just being cynical, though.

This. I'm pulling for the movie. I want it to be awesome. If it inspires young black kids or adults, all the better. Something just feels "forced" from a lot of the white Hollywood crowd. I could be wrong, but I think we have plenty of reason to be skeptical these days.

For example, I think The Force Awakens was handled perfectly. The main character was a woman, but they didn't market it as some sort of female empowerment thing that would turn the tides in Hollywood. (At least that I noticed.)

It was just a Star Wars movie, and that was it. And a pretty damn good one.

Now, if women embraced the movie and felt empowered by it, that should be a nice byproduct of making a great movie with a female lead character. It shouldn't be the main hook in the marketing. (This is what sort of soured me on Wonder Woman, aside from the fact that it was just a bland movie overall.)

I don't really want to wade too deep in these waters, but was it clear back then that Rey was going to be the main character?

Although, "they" could have easily picked from a female, Black or Hispanic character to "rally" behind

edit: Is Oscar Issac Hispanic?

As a white person, I'm "overly" excited about it because it just looks like it is going to be a gorgeous movie and we haven't seen anything quite like it yet.

Plus, the character has been awesome, Chad Bosewick is hot, the action looks incredible and it's going to lead into IW. What wouldn't I be excited about this?

Call me crazy, but the need to target a specific market for a Star Wars movie in order to drum up excitement might not be as important a strategy for that particular franchise.

As dad to a daughter who was 9 when TFA came out, I can damn well tell you there was no marketing to her vis-a-vis Rey. Christmas that year found action figures like Kylo Ren under the tree, but there was no figure for Rey available except as an add-on in some vehicle set.

That was actually a criticism of the merch for the film, Rey wasn't marketing as a primary character in the toys.

That was corrected with Jyn Erso on Rogue One and I'd imagine for TLJ as well.

I want all Marvel movies to kick ass because they are fun and entertaining. I don't want any political bull**** ruining this one. So looking forward to it and will go in excited.

*coming from a hispanic that really doesn't need the minority angle sold to me. I don't get all weepy knowing that Antonio Banderas was a badass in Desperado. I just enjoyed his ass kicking, Salma's boobs, and loved that it was a lower budget flick without all the cgi crap.

I'm hoping for a fantastic movie and I think it'll be just that. They have an absolutely incredible cast. I honestly can't wait to get into the theatre.

But for the love of God please don't shove the politics and stuff down my throat. I don't think the movie does that. It will be the outside people trying to do it
