Just got out myself.

Walking back to my car, one word kept popping into my head: satisfying. This was a very satisfying Halloween sequel. This was a very well-made film, with a very very good performance by Curtis. I also thought that the performance by the teenage granddaughter was also very good.

The "final showdown" at Curtis' house was very well done. Very tense and unpredictable. I also really felt that this was the same Shape that we had first seen in the original movie. In all the sequels (well, after the first Carpenter-produced sequel), I never really got the sense that this was the same person. This one? I can't explain it.....it just felt like this was the really him finally.

Good scenes: the babysitter scene (that was kinda ruined by the trailers) and a scene with a backyard with a motion-sensor light.

I will make one nitpick: there seemed to be a few too many senseless killings leading up to the main killings. And there was a little more gore than I felt was necessary. I mean, the original barely had a drop of blood. But I guess that's just what audiences expect today.

All in all, see this movie. It was worth the wait. And talk about the ultimate female-empowerment film: all three women in this family were strong characters.

Here's how I feel real old right now: I took my wife to see this movie that came out 40 years after the original. 20 years ago, I took my wife to see Halloween: H20 at the Schulman Theater. God, I feel old.

I agree with you on the random killings.

However want to mention one thing that was great. When Michael looks over the balcony and Laurie is gone.

FANTASTIC

Wife and I saw it tonight - best one since the original, no doubt. A few well-done homages to the original and good enough to forget they rendered the majority of the series moot with this new sequel (a third "Halloween II," of sorts). Definitely more gory than scary but it's a slasher flick, after all. The climax sequence and floodlight scenes were some of the best in the series.

It's also arguably a better movie than the first one if you subtract the nostalgia factor.

~$10M Thursday night

(The Nun did 5.4, It did 8. And those both had IMAX, this does not.)

Edit: Guess Deadline was off.

Went with the fiance last night. I'm not a big scary movie/slasher film, but this was pretty decent. JLC was damn good. I also thought it was over-the-top with the gore as well, but since I work in medicine, its just something I don't like to see in my home life as much. Thought it ended right as it started to pick up the pace as well.

So anyone sty for the after credits. Supposed to be a teaser I heard. Going to watch it this evening

Just googled it. I'll probably watch the movie again, but in case anyone is wondering.

After the final credit rolls, the music playing in the background cuts off, and the sound completely changes. The ever-frightening breathing of Michael Myers can be heard roaring through the speakers. While certainly a creepy treat for audiences, this small addition also lends itself to help set up a Halloween sequel.

I mean, it's certainly not unexpected. But still, kind of neuters that ending, imo.

Not reading this thread so not sure if posted but this is worth a listen even though it is from last year.

One random thing that I really liked.

Mild spoiler: The pumpkin coming "back to life" in the opening credits was pretty great. A nice analogy for the franchise itself.

Didn't stay because my After Credits app said there wasn't anything. [edit] Ha! Just checked it again and now it says there is something after the credits!

Still, Michael better be dead. This story (the original and the sequel) were solely about Michael and Laurie and his primal need to kill her and her having to confront the monster that ruined her life. She did that with this movie. The story has now been completed and is over. To try and continue with further sequels will only ruin this movie's whole reason for being.

Regarding the end credits scene I agree that Michael Myers should be dead and remain dead. As someone who loves this franchise, it needs to happen. But I do think there could possibly be a story to tell here about the granddaughter maybe? Maybe that since Michael physically is dead, what he represents and the evil brought upon so many people still lives on. He's become a legend in that regard. Just an idea as the creators have said multiple times that originally they had the intention of writing and shooting 2 films back to back

I did a double feature at Alamo Drafthouse last night. 6:00 showing of Halloween (1978) and 8:40 showing of Halloween (2018). Great stuff. Hadn't seen the original in about 10 years and nearly forgot how great it is.

The 2018 version was also quite good as well. I agree with the scares not quite being there, though as someone mentioned the trailers gave away a few of the creepy moments, as to be expected I suppose. The light motion detector scene was awesome though along with the final 20 or so minutes. Seeing the original right before also highlighted how many effective callbacks there were to the original.

A solid B+ movie.

$75M+, second best October opening of all time, right behind Venom. ($80M)

https://deadline.com/2018/10/halloween-record-opening-weekend-box-office-1202485871//

Will it break it? Would be insane to have that record broken twice in three weeks.

The opening days are identical for both, $32M.

I think the high RT might be the difference maker in getting Halloween to edge out Venom, and that's without the benefit of IMAX tickets.

I think it may even top 75. Seeing a lot of buzz around reddit for this one. It's a perfect storm of a good release date, solid reviews, the return of JLC and John Carpenter, and horror being in a good place in Hollywood as of late.

I'll go high and say $80M opening.

Boom! 80.5. Down goes Venom.

This was pretty good to great and about as good of a sequel to Halloween as can be made in the year 2018. You can sense that David Gordon Green and Danny McBride adore the original, and you can see that in every frame of this thing. Believe it Or not, there's actually a lot to unpack thematically here concerning victim trauma and overcoming fears that's legitimately refreshing even amongst the standard slashed mayhem that ensues.

I absolutely loved the finale with Laurie Strode emerging from the darkness like Michael in the original- the hunter now, not the victim. It's cool little touches like this that comment on and hilight the themes of the original.

Where the film kind of falters is, believe it or not, in its humor. The jokes are funny, but some tend to under cut the tension that is built fairly methodically. It's almost like McBride and Green, with their impeccable comedy background, couldn't help themselves. Still, there's some solid suspense here that mostly works.

Overall, this is ridiculously solid that comes close to classic status, if doesn't quite deliver necessarily at that level.

Damn. Looks like it'll fall just short of Venom after all. $77M opening, which is still a MASSIVE success for this series.

Apparently JLC was paid scale for this movie (basically pennies), but negotiated for points on the gross. So, she is about to cash in. (As well she should!)

Just to put into perspective how big a success this was for this series...

Total domestic gross:
1. Halloween (2018) - $77,501,000
2. Halloween (2007) - $58,272,029
3. Halloween: H20 - $55,041,738
4. Halloween - $47,000,000
5. Halloween II (2009) - $33,392,973

Adjusted for inflation:
1. Halloween - $183,581,200
2. Halloween: H20 - $107,266,800
3. Halloween II - $83,949,300
4. Halloween (2018) - $77,501,000
5. Halloween (2007) - $77,413,700

So in a single weekend, it's already the top grossing movie in the series, and the 4th highest adjusted for inflation. By the end of next weekend, it'll likely have passed H20.

Anyone thinks it catches the original?

I'm not sure this will have a lot of legs past Halloween. I could be wrong though, it just seems that Christmas season starts Nov. 1st nowadays. Do horror movies do well in November?

That's pretty much the x-factor in predicting how it'll do overall.

I feel like it'll hold well in its second weekend due to being closer to Halloween, but it may fall off a cliff after that.

Though I wonder if word of mouth might counteract that.

This is a tough one to call.

Box office records update:

#4 slasher movie of all time. (Behind Scream 1, 2, 3. Should be #1 by the end of this weekend.)

#17 R-rated horror movie of all time. (Should jump to #10 in the same timeframe, currently held by Scream.)

#5 Blumhouse movie, behind Get Out, Split, and Paranormal Activity 1 & 3. (Will jump to #3. Has a decent shot at passing Split for #2. Get Out at $176M might be tough.)

Also, the Halloween franchise has now surpassed both Friday the 13th and Nighmare on Elm Street as the highest-grossing horror franchise in the US.

So it's official, Michael has killed Jason and Freddy.

Be interesting to see how the lawsuit that put the Friday the 13th on hold that that was going to dive deeper in Jason, pick up after the original Friday the 13th after his mom was killed and his family especially his Father.

Re-watching the series and just finished #5 and forgot how much of a mess this became with the whole Cult of Thorn.

I originally knew Donald Pleasance from Halloween and Escape from NY, but assumed after watching The Great Escape as a kid that he was an established big time actor that just did a few campy roles for the fun of it.

After watching Halloween 4 and 5... Yeesh. The guy is pretty bad.
