As a fellow high school teacher of AP Computer Science nerds, there is definitely a different kind of bully that exists in this environment today. They make "friends" with more physically threating jock types by providing "help" with assignments and "test preparation". While they may not be the smartest of the nerds, they are smart enough to help the jocks and more willing to cheat or steal than their smarter nerd counterparts. They are social media savvy and use this to bully the nerdier nerds and are protected from any retaliation by their jock friends, when needed, and their followers on social media to apply social pressure.

So I think they did a good job in modelling the new social order in the nerd world. But was it necessary, probably not. More of an attempt to be conscience of the changing world we live in.


If they would have had Flash do two (maybe one) of the things you mentioned in addition to the DJ thing, it wouldn't be such an issue for me and probably others. As it's been said, he was not a convincing bully whether it be a "new" or "traditional" one.

Seriously. A bully is someone that is able to make their victim feel threatened on some level (physically, emotionally, or maybe even socially). This Flash wasn't threatening on any of those levels to almost anyone. Peter was taller, stronger, smarter, more popular, and was even taking a senior girl (legendary status for a sophmore in HS) to homecoming. This Flash actually fit the bill for 'loser' in almost every category other than 'money.' Which again, isn't really a threat to someone running around with a multi million dollar tech suit that Tony Stark made for him.

The only people that didn't seem to like Flash were the other decathlon kids. But everyone at that party, and the blonde in his dad's sports car, seemed to think he wasn't a loser, presumably..

But then again, you don't have to be popular to be a bully. You can be an ever bigger loser than the kid you're bullying. You just have to be a d*** and put someone down a lot. See: TexAgs football forum.

Good spiderman. Tons of nods. Better than anything Sony has done with the character. The morality of Stark is certainly post IM3 which speeds up the 15yos character development.

Now this is where I tell you to get off my lawn.

1) way too much cussing. Yall remember logan where they got the R rating for violence then they threw in tits and shoehorned the f-word into the dialogue? Same thing feel here. Now I'm not opposed to cussing in movies, Deadpool was great. But everyone went into the theater expecting Deadpool to cuss like a sailor. Spidey is the youngest hero in the mcu, thus skewing his appeal to a younger demo, this felt like it had more cussing than any of the mcu films.

2) "eff", marry, kill. Surely there is a better way to introduce the female's interest in Spiderman. This rips any innocence from the crush and makes it sexual.

3) "I was looking at porn." A 300 lb nerd obsessed with starwars with multiple screens up, the obvious joke is gaming. But they decide porn. "Hey let's joke about objectifying others for sexual gratification!"

4) and then finally the dig at washington. It serves no purpose other than to advance the culture war.

The bullying angle was so crap too. Like it rolled off peters back so quick it wasn't even effective to make Flash be a bully.

The hero didn't sit in a fetal position rocking "they are calling me 'penus parker'!" At least with toby MacGuire the bully throws him against the lockers, trips him in the cafeteria, etc. If "Penus Parker" is bullying then Joe Mangeillo went Columbine on Peter Parker.

So, I saw it tonight and really enjoyed it!

I really enoyed Tony being more of a father figure rather than mentor.

I thought the ferry scene was a fantastic way to show just how far behind the Avengers Peter Parker is. The way Tony says oh hi Spiderman and then cleans up his mess with ease was fun for me.

I also enjoyed Happy saying he had been holding on to the ring since 2008.

Love having another genius superhero.

Looking forward to movie number 2 - Spiderman: Prom

I also really enjoyed how seemlesly Spiderman fit into the MCU world. Not only that, i thought they did a fantastic job of showing how ingrained the avengers are in everyday life at the point of the movie. We finally get to see the other side of the coin and the impact/influence the avengers have.

For me, this movie really gave me a good feel for just how connected all of these stories are we've been watching for the past 10 years.

Especially considering the way he sometimes treats people on this board. Funny to know where his moral line is drawn.

1) Maybe I'm just desensitized, but I don't remember any cussing. I guess there could have been a "sh*t" or two (maybe?), but a PG-13 movie - especially a PG-13 Disney movie - gets one f-bomb, which they only hinted at in the final line, and there's no way "sh*t" was said more than one or two times, if that. The Debt - what else do you consider to be "cussing"? "B*tch"? "Damn"? "Hell"? Because I don't even remember any of those being used hardly either, though I'm sure a couple of them were.

2) Did the main eff, mary, kill girl (she was Gosling's daughter in The Nice Guys, btw) actually drop the f-bomb? I can't remember, but there's just no way. Did Liz? Either way, why does Liz have to posses sexual innocence for her to be someone you truly like/root for? Why does her wanting to have sex with - whoever - make her less in your eyes? She's an 18-year-old high schooler with hormones and this isn't the Middle East.

3) The obvious joke was the porn line. And it was hilarious. In no version of that scene would the gaming excuse be even remotely funny. I don't even understand how that's a joke.

4) It was a dig at the means in which the Washington Monument may or may not have been constructed, not Washington himself, who obviously died long before it was ever built. And whether it was actually built by slaves or not is beside the point. The remark fit her character. And while I agree that her character would likely be someone to needlessly "advance the culture war," why do you automatically assume that's what the filmmakers intended? Do you also conflate the motivations of Bond villains with those of the writers or directors of those movies? It was a semi-funny, character-appropriate line, followed by a funny response from the security guard. You're just actively looking for things to be offended by at this point.

The only thing I agree with you on is the Flash/bully angle. I get what they were going for, but it just didn't work and didn't really serve a greater purpose.

Am i crazy? I could have SWORN they said kiss, marry, kill.

Also, in highschool I was about as innocent as they came and I played F,M,K.

I sincerely don't remember any cursing besides the wtfuu at the end of the movie. I even told a pastor that when we was asking if he could take his kids.

Pretty sure it was screw, marry, kill - but I could be wrong.

Worth noting, a kid in the children's ministry the next day at church did think there were too many "bad words," but that probably includes pen*s. And the near F at the end.

Agree with most of the sentiment and criticisms but two things:

The interrogation scene was bad. Really bad. Funny dialogue but come on. Thug wants to buy weapons but not alien tech weapons because he has a niece in the neighborhood? He just rolls over and tells spidey everything out of the goodness of his heart?

Spidey hasn't really explored what the line is between good and bad. He's all good, saving and helping everyone. While another origin story might be too much at least there's development from his ambivalence that costs him his uncle. He doesn't have that here. I feel like the interrogation scene would have been a good opportunity to explore it. He could cross the line with the suit but not go so far as to compromise his character because it can be done out of ignorance.

There's literally no way the f-bomb was dropped twice in that scene, because both the cheerleader and Liz said it ("it" being whatever word they used). This movie would have received an R-rating if so. Once... maybe? But even that would be shocking. I can't believe I can't remember exactly.

I have absolutely no recollection of any f-bomb dropping during this movie (other than the one that was coming out of Marisa Tomei's mouth at the end). That's not saying much though, as given that my use of "colorful metaphors" some times approaches that of a sailor, I am probably nearly completely desensitized to those words, except in cases where they seem to go out of their way to use them with every other word, like a Tarantino flick.

First off, none of these films are remotely "vulgar", but if you're ordering them there's far more language and innuendo in both Guardians films to start.

Second, you're confused on who this audience is. The film is PG-13 so they can get families, but there's far more late teens and 20somethings spending money on this film than kiddos.

There's a whole lot more informing "youths" out there than Spider-Man, if what happens in this film is the worst my kids are influenced by I'll be pretty freakin' thrilled.
