If the guy who created the characters is OK with the casting, maybe y 'all should reevaluate what makes the character right or wrong. If you want the same damn thing that was done before, just pick up the dvd for the first movie, read a comic, or watch the one of the several animated series.

Heaven forbid someone give a new take on the characters more in line with 2017.

This is ignorant

so. roots with White People is AOK!

I mean, the original story was a false narrative, so should not matter if white people play the characters.

it was a good movie overall, but i thought it was middle of the road for marvel.
kinda saw the plot twist coming,
it kinda dragged in the middle for me though.

the Cap PSAs were nails!

Red heads are one of the true statistical minority's left in the world, and they are literally shrinking as a percentage. If anyone is offended by the casting choices, it should be them.

Next thing you know they'll make a play about Alexander Hamilton with a cast of black actors!

I think there are times when the race of the character is important. Like a white guy playing Black Panther would be ridiculous. Or Luke Cage. Or a black guy playing Iron Fist, because of the whole Black/white dynamic the two of those heroes faced as part of their stories.

Flash was always the comic book personification of Biff from back to the future (or perhaps it was the other way around), who then goes off and becomes a super badass in the Military, and then finally Agent Venom. I don't think it's unreasonable for people to think that Marvel made a mistake in casting a guy who doesn't look like the type of guy that would typically become the all-American badass. Not to mention he came off more like a rival who constantly acts like a Dick, instead of a bully.

Although I will say the odds of the kid who was cast name being Flash Thompson are about as likely as Holland being named Sanjay.

I wasn't too distracted by the actor playing Flash in the movie, but some valid points here. He was miscast and in general characterized wrong in regards to the history and potential future of the character based on the comics storyline of Flash Thompson, and race has nothing to do with that statement.

And I wasn't either. This is probably either my favorite or second favorite Marvel movie. Just my two cents on the matter.

Flash Thompson only became Agent Venom in recent years, didn't he? Clearly they didn't intend for this character to go down that path, so as long as he's a pr*ck to Peter, it's basically all the same.

Rich d-bag, jock d-bag, big white d-bag, smarmy brown d-bag. I'm not really expecting to see much more of him either way, just like the two prior iterations.

Well yeah, but the Shocker didn't have to have the yellow sleeves either. And nobody is complaining that he was portrayed by a black guy. Vulture didn't have to have the jacket. People like it when they pay homage to the spirit of the character, and like it or not, Flash was always the stereotypical popular bully.

Also, I like Tony because of some stuff I've seen him do with Screen Junkies, plus I never read Spider Man comics so am not familiar with Flash Thompson at all...

...but I admit it's hard to find this intimidating...

Thought this was a cool tidbit from the film:

Jennifer Connelly is the voice of Karen, aka "Suit Lady". Her real life husband is Paul Bettany, who was the voice of Jarvis...and now Vision.

Let me boil down the Flash debate (and I happen to agree with the critics here):

Flash Thompson was supposed to be the jock who was bigger, richer, more handsome and more athletic than Peter. He was everything Peter wasn't and he reminded him of it constantly through physical and verbal intimidation all through high school.

This version of Flash is smaller, less attractive, not athletic and is noticeably dumber (in a school of smart kids) than Peter. There is nothing that this kid has on Peter except almost certainly money. There is zero physical intimidation and, in a school of smart kids where the Academic Decathalon is their biggest "sports" team, he is well below Parker on that squad. In fact, he's well below ever other person on the squad: he's the alternate. If he had been captain, then this whole situation wouldn't exist.

His race has zero to do with it, so shove that "texags is just racist" bullsh*t up your ass. His casting and characterization was a mistake, pure and simple. I have no issues with ANY of the casting or racial identities of any of the other characters, as they didn't make any difference to the story. However, Flash Thompson was wrong for this movie.

I think the corvette scene was supposed to solidify the whole "Flash is rich and Peter isn't" thing, but that scene was a total throwaway IMO. I literally thought he was just saying hi to his friend at first.

It just felt like everything that happened with the Flash character was just a last minute add on.

Gotta agree with that summation....if Flash had simply been Peter's peer on an academic level PLUS the fact that he was a rich d-bag, then they would have successfully achieved the modern-day bully take that this film was attempting to capture. But this version of Flash was absolutely no threat to Peter...he was actually kind of pointless to even have in the movie.

Sorry to derail this Flash thread, but I wonder if Sony is going to rethink their solo villains plans. I wonder if they are going to take characters from Homecoming and put them in with Venom or Black Cat or whoever they decide on.

Now that would be confusing AF.

Spidey vs WW & Gotg2

Opening Weekend
146.5 M GotG V2
117.0 M Homecoming
103.3 M Wonder Woman

Total
385.7 M GotG V2
369.7 M Wonder Woman (a lot better staying power)
129.2 M Homecoming (only 4 days here)

Yeah.......so

Arguably one of the best super hero movies to date IMHO. I would put it equal to the other top Marvel films

Spider-Man Homecoming = Iron Man = Captain America = Winter Soldier = Guardians of the Galaxy = Avengers

Won't try to rank the rest after that. Dark Knight would probably sit just above those.

Definitely the best Spider-Man iteration. Helps me forget Maguire. I did like Garfield's films but not nearly as well done as this.

Loved that they didn't try to retell the origin story.

So well written and well acted by Tom Holland and Michael Keaton. Humor level was awesome and so well done.

Definitely going to try to see this again in theaters. Haven't done that since the first Guardians.

TCTTS - interested to hear your take. Or maybe you should start a non-Flash thread for your review.

The whole post is spoilers, so skip if for some reason you haven't seen it yet are reading the discussion/spoilers thread.

We saw it last night, and there were a few things y'all have mentioned that I noticed. But first of all, y'all keep acting like their school doesn't have athletics. What? They have a million dollar turf stadium outside the school and you see the football team practice. They have athletics, and that gives cheerleaders a legitimate purpose. They also talk a lot about a marching band, further evidence of at least having a football team.

As a high school teacher, the biggest bullies on campus are smaller, weaker, and generally dumber. I know, it sounds like the things parents have to say, but the bullying comes in the form of insecurity. Flash using his influence as a DJ to call Peter out makes perfect sense. The thing that irked me is being called "Flash" you'd expect some sort of perceived physical threat, if nothing else faster. The diversity races at the school were good. F-M-K was hilarious, as were the PSAs

So Peter and his buddy didn't in any way try to explain his absence from National competition? No "he was sick" or anything? Just he wasn't there, but when it came time to be picked up, he was with everyone else. Kids are great with excuses, but they didn't even try there.

The world's greatest security bunker had no surveillance? No alarms when forced open or 20 attempts at manual override? I'm all about suspending disbelief, especially in a comic book movie with alien weapons, but that was hard to grasp. That also plays into the previously mentioned compete lack of guards/observation of the move. The plane is under direct attack for a long time before Happy notices anything. Just seemed odd.

I loved the in house scene of Peter realizing and being so awkward. The car conversation did seem a little forced to make the revelation.

The buddy/sidekick was hilarious too. Despite the issues and questions, I really did enjoy the movie, as did my non-Marvel loving wife.

Sorry, I just haven't had the time to post - or really even solidify - my thoughts. But yeah, I usually just stay away if I have nothing good to say or don't feel like battling the masses.

But I actually loved the movie for the most part.

I'd say about half an hour in I was convinced it was going to be my new number one over GOTG2, but the second half or so kind of showed some cracks. Still, I'd probably put it in my top five Marvel movies, maybe even top three.

My biggest mistake was peeking in this thread before I saw the movie. I wanted to know what people were thinking and so I just lightly skimmed, trying to avoid any spoilers, but at one point I accidentally read the words "Liz," "twist," and "front door." And so the second Peter and Ned showed up to Liz's massive house for the party, I immediately guessed that she was Toomes' daughter and that Toomes' business had reaped a hefty financial reward. Was so pissed at myself, and it definitely took away some of the surprise of the ending.

Still, overall, it made me miss how truly FUN movies like this can and should be. I loved Tom Holland's performance, I loved the way Tony/the concept of The Avengers were seamlessly integrated, and I was so glad Peter made the decision he did at the end, because I can't wait to hang out with all these characters again in high school for another movie.

After seeing this, I now have a new favorite secondary character in the Marvel Universe.

I loved this guy. Loved the kid who played him, loved the character and loved all his lines. I can't wait to see more of him in future movies. Hopefully, he makes a cameo in Infinity War.

What's interesting about him, for those who aren't comic readers, is that he's at least heavily influenced by Ganke, Miles Morales' best friend in Ultimate Spider-Man. His name is borrowed from an entirely different character, as I think has been mentioned.

Yep. She was one of my first on-screen crushes when I first saw her in The Rocketeer, another underrated comic book movie.

Thought her voice sounded familiar, then noticed it in the credits. Will definitely be picturing 'Karen' in a different light the next time I see it.

As a fellow high school teacher of AP Computer Science nerds, there is definitely a different kind of bully that exists in this environment today. They make "friends" with more physically threating jock types by providing "help" with assignments and "test preparation". While they may not be the smartest of the nerds, they are smart enough to help the jocks and more willing to cheat or steal than their smarter nerd counterparts. They are social media savvy and use this to bully the nerdier nerds and are protected from any retaliation by their jock friends, when needed, and their followers on social media to apply social pressure.

So I think they did a good job in modelling the new social order in the nerd world. But was it necessary, probably not. More of an attempt to be conscience of the changing world we live in.
