Yeah, I had a heads up from people who had seen it in Dallas a few weeks before so I kind of knew it wasn't going to improve in act 2. I initially gave my tickets away to a friend, but then her husband couldn't go so I decided to give it a shot. Tried to have an open mind, but it was just so bad. We didn't even discuss it at intermission - just looked at each other like, "you're out too, right?" I genuinely felt bad for the actors and that was the only thing that tempted me to stay. Obviously talented people, they were just given trash to work with.

Haven't seen this thread before. We've had Broadway Dallas for 5 years and really enjoy it. Looking forward to following this thread.

Has anyone seen To Kill a Mockingbird? I got an email from our theatre that says "The stage adaptation is nonetheless made with appreciation for Lee's novel, and that mix of homage and update has translated into a family-friendly Broadway hit."

Is it really a family friendly adaptation? I just reread the book (love it) but I can't see a ton of family friendly coming out of it. I have a sitter for my 8yo daughter lined up just in case, but now I'm curious if it would be something appropriate to take her to.

It's still To Kill a Mockingbird with all the main plot points. I can't think of a good reason to take a 8yo.

thanks, that's what I was thinking too but that wording made me do a double take.

Just curious:

Since quarantine, have people attended theatre/Broadway shows at the same or similar rate as pre quarantine?

For me, I have not (at all) for probably same reasons as going to fewer movies. I'm guessing that if you are a season ticket holder, you maybe have, but I'm just curious.

I haven't, I would say it has more to do with the offerings than anything else. Haven't really been excited to see anything new since Hadestown. The traveling shows to Houston/CS lately haven't really been things I was terribly interested in.

Once shows started touring again and Broadway came back, we've gone to any show we've had a slight interest in, and we saw 2 shows in New York last February. I really missed live theater and it's brought me a lot of joy after Covid.

I think I've seen more Broadway shows than movies in the theater in the last 18mo.

Saw Jesus Christ, Superstar for the first time this past weekend.

Yikes. I just don't think I'm an Andrew Lloyd Weber fan. Phantom is ok, but CATS and JCS have been my least favorite theater experiences by a good margin.

Houston will have some of these - I know someone at Hobby.

They haven't fully locked everything in (as of last week when I talked to them anyway) but 3 of those will be on Houston's schedule as of now. Don't want to say anything specifically that might get my friend in trouble.

JCS is pretty weird, to say the least. I took my mom and wife to see it last year (mom was a fan, wife had never seen it). I think nostalgia for the film and a few select songs are why anyone still likes it. But it did not really take for my wife, at all.

First time posting on this thread so maybe many musicals are like this, but it has a real unapologetic approach - just start singing and you can figure out who the hell anyone is, or not, because we aren't going to explain anything. And hopefully you've read the gospels recently! (My wife had not)

We saw To Kill A Mockingbird this past Friday and it was great. Richard Thomas was a great Atticus, gave me chills in his speeches. Scouts voice was a little annoying but I get that she was trying to sound young, but it almost came off as babyish. Dill's character was the comic relief in a pretty serious play. I asked earlier if I should take my 8yo daughter, and I didn't and am glad. Being a straight play with no singing would have been boring for her I think even without the subject matter. Maybe 12-13ish would be OK, but there is a LOT of hate and n bombs.

We watched Fiddler this past weekend. First few songs are more known and fun. The entire 2nd act was a snoozer.

Didn't care for it too much.

We enjoyed Season 1. It's probably funnier if you are familiar with and enjoy musicals. I can imagine if you don't watch a lot of musicals some of the humor is a big miss and it probably seems cheesy or over-acted.

A lot of the cast are musical and theater stars more than they've been film/tv. There's a lot of poking fun at the tropes of the genre, especially classic musical theater, and it doesn't take itself seriously at all. We haven't watched Season 2 yet, but we've got it in the queue. I'm assuming since it's Schmicago that it'll poke fun at a slightly different era than Season 1.

Cecily always seemed like one of the SNL cast members that really wanted to be a broadway star but landed in comedy instead and so she convinced Lorne to back a tv show where she could be the musical theater star she always wanted to be

Have been to 2 shows over the last few weeks in Denver.
Jagged Little Pill was pretty good, heavy, but a decent overall story to connect all the songs for a jukebox musical. I probably wouldn't really want to see it again, but I have listened to the original album a few times since and it really holds up. (The did have a nice part discussing how "Ironic" wasn't really Ironic.

Just went to Beetlejuice this past weekend and we all enjoyed it. My daughter was in love with the whole production (she has no background with the movie at all). I know I watched the movie a ton when it came out but didn't really remember anything other than the basics. The lead of Lydia was really, really strong and Beetlejuice was just chaos which was great. Only person I didn't like was the person playing Adam. He just didn't sell it to me like the one in the movie. The lights and sets were top notch in our production. I wouldn't hesitate seeing it again

I really liked season 1, and season 2 was fine.
Not sure I'll invest time in a Season 3 if it comes out, but I'm guessing they will, and I'll probably watch.

Watched, "What a Wonderful World," a few weeks ago.

The show is way too long, unless you are familiar with a bunch of Louis Armstrong songs.

The main highlight of the show was James Monroe Iglehart. He played Louis. Iglehart is the original Genie from Aladdin, who won a Tony. The dude is crazy good! He performed a 3 hour show with 2-1/2 hours of the show mimicking Armstrong's growly voice. Very impressive!

Next show is Saturday...MJ!

Got to see MJ.

Very good show. Highly entertaining. Our lead was really good. When he sang with Momma Jackson, several duets, it was superb. They have very good chemistry.

The story line, how they presented MJ's history, was well done. Built around the preparation for hiss Dangerous Tour in '92-'93. An interview team was following him, asking questions about his life and the songs. This provided some flashbacks of his family dynamic.

It was not too political. No race stuff. No LGB stuff. There was a little bit of environment stuff, but that was MJ's thing. Therefore, it was a very non-political entertaining show.

I will give it a 4 out of 5. It will not break into the top 10. Why? If they are going to bring in some history, his father, drugs, etc., then they should answer some of these history issues. I don't believe they closed these issues throughout the show. Also, even though I love the music and enjoyed the presentation, I thought there could have been more. We are talking about MJ, I think the Beat It, Bad,and Billy Jean sets could have been better done. Thriller and Smooth Criminal were fantastic. Man in the Mirror was greatly done with the multiple ensembles. However, in total, there could have been better sets/presentation of several songs. I might be asking for too much when there are 30+ songs to perform.

Anyhow, great show that is definitely worth a see.

Just found this thread, and really just started going to shows regularly. So let's see, what have we seen.....

On Broadway:

  • Mean Girls - hadn't seen the movie, but the play was fun. Watched the movie after we got home and loved it
  • School of Rock - it was great and the kids were fabulous
  • Sweeney Todd with Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford (who was incredible) as Mrs. Lovett - enjoyed it

Not Broadway:

  • Rock of Ages (in Vegas) - this is our favorite type of music and it was well done (and the Bourbon Room in the Venetian was a favorite place to go
  • Phantom of the Opera (also in Vegas) - the Venetian Theater was majorly remodeled specifically for this show, and it was magnificant
  • SpamALot - not that memorable but I think I liked it
  • Hamilton - not a fan of it because of the race thing, but it was a great show never the less. Definitely left impressed.
  • The Lion King - one of my top shows. The creativity was out of bounds good!
  • Dear Evan Hansen - never heard of it, better than I expected
  • Legally Blonde the Musical - one of my wife's favorite movies, and the play was pretty good
  • Fiddler on the Roof - a long time fave that didn't disappoint
  • STOMP - seen it a couple of times, and as a drummer it's obviously a fave. The most recent performance was last week and it's a fave.

Local Theater:

  • Annie - I hate this musical, but it starred my niece who was amazing
  • Into the Woods - high school version - also featured my niece, so yeah, another fave
  • South Pacific, Oklahoma, The King and I, some others that my niece was in - all OK
  • Les Mis - a local cast that included David Gaschen put on a great show
  • Sweeney Todd - put on by the TxTech theater department and starred a friend of ours as Mrs. Lovett, and she was fantastic

I know there were others, but those are the ones that stood out that I can remember right now.

That did not disappoint! Tons of nods to the movies and iconic lines worked in. Doc and Marty were written to be pretty accurate with a touch of Rick and Morty flair. The sets were incredible and the original music worked really well. I mean I'm a big BTTF fan but that was a ton of fun.

Hottest tix right now are Stereophonic (play with music) and the Outsiders the Musical.

Six is super fun; no storyline to follow really. A bit short (probably worth considering when figuring out the best bang for your super expensive broadway tix these days).

Back to the Future was just ok for me... but if you want nostalgia... a good place to start.

The Great Gatsby is a traditional big broadway production. I didn't find the music that memorable but the vocal performances were outstanding.

I'm one of maybe .1% who absolutely hated Hamilton. Almost clapped when Aaron Burr shot him dead.

I'm too conservative to see shows like Suffs or Oh Mary or Cabaret. Saw &Juliet without having done research. Nearly walked out. Not a fan of random juke box musicals anyway, major Trans theme.

Of course there remain great standards like Wicked and Lion King.

Haven't seen the Notebook and not sure I will. Hell's Kitchen is driven by Alicia Keys music... not a draw for me either, but if you like her music, sounds worth seeing.

My suggestion? Go look at the Tony Award performances from last month. Might help if you want to see something new and you want to see a musical. I think the performance from the Outsiders (one of my all time top 10) was outstanding.

Audra McDonald is going to be in the Gypsy revival, I think previews start in November. That's on my must-see list. I saw her in Ragtime (one of her half dozen Tonys) and it was the most stunning performance I've ever seen.

Six is a blast. Saw it on Broadway and twice on tour- super infectious, high energy and fun. 90min show, no intermission.

I've heard good things about Suffs, I'm hoping to catch it on tour soon.

We saw Girl From North Country last night

Don't bother. It was not good. Very boring. Singers were good but the storyline was a mess.
