I agree, the show really seems to capture the whole vastness of space in that part of the country. It reminds me of Boardwalk Empire in the sense that you absolutely feel like you are in that world. The Gerhardt's are so interesting. Most shows focus on the mob in the Northeast or Vegas. You rarely get a look at these small town gangsters and the Kansas City Mob.

Every time there is a tv or movie scene involving a pre-dug grave, I always wonder what my real response would be if ever put in that situation. I tell myself that there is no ****ing way I'd give up and they'd probably have to shoot me in the back hauling ass out of there, but I guess you would never know for sure until you're standing in front of your own grave - which is something I obviously hope never to do.

I would never get in the grave. Especially with an asphalt truck right there! I'd at least want to make them work hard to kill me.

It really sucks because Skip was hilarious.

Skip reminded me of Jerry Lundegaard talking to the GM guy in his office.

I was noticing this too. Has a much different look than season 1

They made everything look like those films we watched (on a projector) in elementary school (I'm an old).

I loved this line, and it is a great description of people in the Upper Midwest. My territory at work is that part of the country, and all of my clients are exactly like that, very passive aggressive. Part of the reason I like this show so much is because I've actually been to Luverne, MN and most every location they go to, and they have nailed it in terms of the mannerisms of the people.

YES. My wife's family is from Minnesota. I can't tell you how many times I hear "Minnesota Nice" from them.

Very solid

Makes you wonder how many people are dead in the next episode

Yeah it's gonna get dicey in a hurry. Good ep. Sad to see mollys mom struggle with the trial medicine.

Kirsten Dunst is freaking killing it. Crazy as I never thought I'd conjure up those words, but she continues to prove that this role was made for her

Agree. I like a lot of what is on tv, but this is currently tier 1 and it has no company. Just a step above the rest

At my old job one of our main customers was a Minnesota company. The first time one of the PMs dropped an f-bomb we all **** our pants because we knew he had to be beyond pissed off because they usually used their minnesota nice tactics on us.

It was his shoe I thought? Got knocked up there when he got smashed by the car...

If not it makes more sense. I totally think it was a hallucination.

Great episode! The movie theater scene was awesome. I needed to see some badassary from this family to prove to me that they're this big mafia powerhouse, this episode did that. The donut shop scene was great too with the cattle prod.
The ending scene with Ed and Solverson, "I know you did it, come clean, otherwise you're screwed."

Only beef is the Indian and his discovery of the butchers car. He happens to find glass in the snow, then sees an auto shop, the same auto shop that is holding the butcher's car. Then he finds the address, the belt buckle, etc...
I get it, he's a tracking Indian, but that was a little to easy. Maybe the Alien spaceship helped him out.

I am banking the episodes until the season is complete, but how much (if any) does this build on season one?

I recall they were supposed to be completely separate, although there may be occasional subtle callbacks or something.
The only direct connection is Lou Solverson's character (Officer Solverson's dad in season 1) and his references to what happened back in '79. Other than that there's been one or two little nods ("What are you going to name your snowman?" "Billy bob!") but nothing major.

I got the impression when he found the piece of glass he had some sort of mystical impulse like doing the Sun Dance or something. The guy has some mystical powers. Or maybe he visited every body shop in the miserable little town and they did not show that.

In Season One, when Lou is sitting outside his daughter's house with his gun and the step-granddaughter comes out, he tells her he protected his own house in the same way years ago. That was shown in this episode.

I'm guessing in 1979 the town only had one body shop.

When you see such a great show not made by HBO or showtime it makes you wonder how other networks can't find the same recipe for success as Fargo. Fargo has great cinematography, story line, and casting. Alot of shows hit on some of those points but rarely all. For instance, I really think Turned and Vikings were missed opportunities and could have been great

Very few networks will let the creators do their thing. AMC and FX are the exception. Other networks(traditional or cable) are afraid to put a lot of money behind an unproven commodity, especially with how cheap reality television and crap tv is(and the ratings bonanza they get due to the lemmings in this country).

It's risky as hell for FX and AMC to take on these big projects, but after they hit gold with 1 or 2, it becomes a lot easier to take chances. The other networks will take an idea and muck it up/cheapen it, etc. to make it work.

I know AMC has had some big shows, but has FX? This is the first thing from them I've really watched.

Youre missing out? Ever heard of these:
- Nip/Tuck
- The Shield
- The Americans
- Rescue Me
- Sons of Anarchy
- Damages

Some of the above are among my favorite shows ever, but I put FX on the same level as HBO. I will give most anything they put out there a chance. Honestly, I think after HBO and Showtime they are the best network. Sure, AMC had Breaking Bad and Mad men, but that's really it.

yeah FX has pushed the envelope for some time now. They are usually grittier shows that might be a bit rougher around the edges, but they've definitely been one of the "good networks" for years.

And shame on TXAGFAN to leave off the best FX show they've ever done...Justified.

Watched a lot of The Shield but that was quite a while ago

Watched a bit of Nip/Tuck but wasn't my thing, I have watched some of SoA never got into the others. I've heard The Americans is really good, might give that a shot.

Ah, forgot about Justified. I did watch the first two seasons and really enjoyed it, need to catch up.

Out of the current rotation of shows I'm watching (WD, Leftovers, Fargo), this one is by far the best. Zero letdown from week to week so far. And they are just killing the 70's movie vibe.

As much as you should hate the Gerharts because they are bad people, they have done a good job of putting them on the "good side" as compared to KC mob. Mom and the Indian are fantastic, and they've actually made Dodd likable in a twisted sort of way.

I'm in the camp that the Indian happened upon the car because it was the only body shop in town.

And the typewriter guy wasn't the Lundegard / Nygaard character - it is Ed. Sad sack, hen-pecked, can't catch a break, in over his head and now thrust unwillingly into covering up a crime.

I watched it a few years ago for the first time. Tons of fun. I had a lot of issues with the acting of some of the smaller characters at times, and if I hear the term "money train" in any serious conversation I immediately cringe.

But the show is freaking awesome. Super strong acting from the leads, and just a fun fun ride.
