Exactly. I am disappointed with DC because I grew up watching the Batman, Superman, and Justice League Animated Series. I also liked Marvel because of Spiderman and the X-Men but knew nothing of their other characters.

I knew nothing of Marvel and they blew me away consistently with their films and DC disappointed because they didn't live up to a vision I had. I know nothing of this Marvel character except it looks like ass and a guy going to go paintballing.

I know nothing of the Crossbones character, so just did a quick GIS of him....

Well, seems like they basically nailed the look. Doesn't mean it isn't cheesy in these photos, but just gotta reserve full judgement until you see the final product on the screen. Same as the Suicide Squad.

So what is "DCish" v. "Marvelish"?

Like Marsuvees, I was a DC kid (back in the 70's) and knew very little about Marvel except that they seem to be stealing a lot of the DC ideas. And I too am disappointed that DC hasn't figured out their vision for the DCU and how to make it work.

It just looks more like something that you would see in a DC movie than a Marvel movie. I can't really explain it more than that. I'm not complaining and don't have an issue with the DC costumes (except for Harley Quinn's), it's just if I didn't know what the character was, I would have assumed it was a Suicide Squad character.

Honestly, I opened up all of my subscribed threads and started going through them. I saw the photo and thought I was in the DC thread then saw Civil War

Biggest difference between the Crossbones costume and the bulk of the Suicide Squad costumes is that it's not generic. When Crossbones walks into a scene, you'll be able to immediately identify him, unlike about half of the SS team that all look the same. Like other Marvel movies, they've done a good job of adapting the traditional comic book costume into something less flamboyant than the comics, and more believable. SS characters seem to rely on applying darker tones, or maybe "here, put this leather jacket on."

It's also a nice progression from his original simple military kit. He didn't go and put on a costume. He added on additional gear/tech to what he has always used. I'm curious what the servo doodads are on his arms, though.

I'm in for Suicide Squad, for sure. I think that all in all, Harley looks great. I think Deadshot's armor costume is pretty good, even if his civilian pimp outfit looks ridiculous. I think Katana's costume is pretty good, but was WAY upstaged by her representation on Arrow. Others either run together or the purpose is unclear. Wait and see. I'm just more excited about seeing that Crossbones in action than most of the SS.

I think this is a BIG part of the problem. Why can't they be the same thing? Why does the movie version have to be that different?

Cap is Cap even if the costume is modified. Still looks the same. Iron Man is Iron Man. Slight modifications don't change his overall look.

Again, DC doesn't have an overall vision like Marvel does. they're trying, with all the crossover episodes, etc. but still not close.

Boy that was poorly written...

Interesting theory though. My beef is that it reduces each gem to the power of the Soul stone (trapping someone within). Besides - Ronan, Malekith and Red Skull were three of the more forgettable MCU villains. So I doubt they'd all be coming back. Besides, what is Red Skull in this universe without Hydra, and why would Hydra (what little may be left of it) choose to follow someone so out of time, and clearly in league with a galactic threat?

It could happen. But I think Thanos will push things forward, not rehash what we've already seen.

This seems like as good a place as any to pose this question: Basically... how do you do comics?

What I mean is, say there's an event like the Civil War or Annihilation Wave. There are the (monthly?) issues, but you can also go to comic stores now and buy them in book form. If you bought the Civil War booklet, does that include everything you'd need to know? Or are there concurrent stories that wouldn't be included, but would be within the same event (for example, the X-Men side of the Civil War) - are those separate books?

Or take my Annihilation Wave example. Let's say you were only interested in the character Nova - where would you start to dive into that? Would you buy a big-book form of Annihilation Wave? Is there a way to procure just the Nova parts? Would that even be recommended - as in, would you get a really incomplete story involving one character and not have much context or resolution?

Thanks in advance. Just curious, since there's a store near by that sells the books like Civil War.

If you're interested in a crossover story like Civil War, the trade paperbacks (collected books like you mention) are a great way. It may leave out some side stories, but very little.

If you're interested in a character, the individual books are the way to go.

Either way, you can handle it digitally.

Civil War is a tough one, because it might be the biggest crossover Marvel ever did. There are 24 trade paperbacks collecting the various issues of Civil War. I bought most of the single issues on Marvel's digital comics app because buying things on that is way too easy, and a lot of them I felt were kind of superfluous. Like if you were a fan of Ms. Marvel and were reading her series regularly, then getting the Ms. Marvel civil war tie-ins would make sense. But if you just want to read Civil War and get a good idea of what happened, they aren't vital.

In my opinion, If I were reading Civil War, the books I would buy are:

Civil War: Road to Civil War
Civil War
Civil War: Amazing Spider Man

These are the most important books I think, and I wouldn't read Civil War without reading those. Other books I would consider are:

Civil War: Iron Man
Civil War: Captain America
Civil War: New Avengers
Civil War: Fallen Son
Civil War: Frontline #11 (you can skip the rest of the series IMO)

Anything else would be based purely on if you have an interest in those characters, I dont think it adds significantly to the story.

Wolverine's Civil War sidestory is also really interesting, though it might not add that much to the big picture.

Couldn't respond on my phone yesterday, for whatever reason. So first of all, thank you all for that information. Very helpful.

Second, do you happen to know what issues would be included on the Civil War book?

And third, as a fan of the films but having never owned more than a few comic books (I think I had a Bishop X-men comic way back in the 90s)... which sagas, if any, would you recommend? Is the Infinity Gauntlet worthwhile, or would it be too old, or with too many obscure characters, to have much relevance to the films? Civil War? Etc.

Thanks in advance. And for any of you who have been reading the Civil War online, feel free to chime in!

I always recommend picking up the first few volumes of Ultimate Spider-Man to start. That will set you on the right path. Then expand to Ultimate X-Men and The Ultimates.

Don't read Ultimate Iron Man, and Ultimate Fantastic Four isn't for everyone, either.

I recommend Ultimate because the world doesn't sprawl too much and has manageable backstory.

It looks like they are releasing TPB civil war serie . I just picked up Marvel Secret Wars and saw they had book 1 of Civil War as a tie in. I didn't get the issue because I have the Avengers story in a collection, plus the other 80+ side stories and such for Civil War in a OneDrive folder.

By the way, this Secret War is also a HUGE crossover....plus the start of the new Marvel characters. I read that they are ending 33 Marvel stories and opening 30 new, or something like that .

The main Civil War book will just be Civil War #1-7. Any other trade paperback branded as "Civil War: _____" will have 3-5 issues of whatever series it is (spider-man, x-men, etc) that tie in to the Civil War crossover. There are some hardcover collections that group some separate stuff together as well. The Avengers hardcover includes the Captain America and Iron Man solo issues, for instance.

For other sagas, I have just finished reading through Infinity Gauntlet, and tbh it feels a little dated. There isn't anything wrong with the story, but comics as a medium have come a long way from those days. There is a lot of text exposition to read through. Generally speaking I find storytelling to be much more efficient with comic writers and artists in the mid to late 2000s and beyond, although that isnt to say there aren't older stories that are still good.

If you like X-men, I recommend the Age of Apocalypse. It's a self contained story that takes place in an alternate timeline, so you don't need to know any additional background to get in to it. It's sold in 4 collected volumes that are really nice.

Also the Ultimate Spider-man recommendation is a good one. Its a great series. The Ultimate Universe is actually ending with the current crossover Secret Wars, but most of the Ultimate series are still good reads.

I recommend reading in the following order:

Avengers Disassembled
House of M
Decimation
Civil War
Red Five
How long do you want to ignore this user?
AG
Thats a pretty good suggestion also. House of M is like Civil War in that there are a lot of tie-ins, but just the main House of M series will be plenty good enough. If you want to go all in on reading the events that lead up to Civil War, add Secret War in there as well (note: singular, not the current Secret Wars or the previous Secret Wars I and II from the 80s).

Also I have to plug Marvel Unlimited here. Collecting comics can get expensive in a hurry. All of these issues are on Unlimited which is $6-9 per month. I collected Civil War by buying the digital copies in Marvel's Comics app, and spent probably $70 dollars at least. That's an entire year of Unlimited service. So unless you just want to collect hard copy versions of it for some reason (not an invalid reason by any means), I would go Unlimited.
