Question - is adamantium the same material infused into Wolverine?
Yes, at least in the comics.

I thought it was decent! Maybe I was just in the mood for a comic book film but it was engaging throughout.

The good:
- I thought the action was pretty consistently good. Not Winter Soldier tier but few things are. Maybe Black Panther level.
- I liked Harrison Ford in this. He was better in this as Ross than he was in the Force Awakens as Han Solo. Come at me.
- I thought the Red Hulk fight was solid. Better than the Batman vs Superman fight in BvS. A better version of "this would be totally lopsided, right?" kind of fight.
- I liked that it was an actual geopolitical thriller, involving actual nations. It's not super nuanced but it's a little better than Wakanda Forever's "everyone is after our vibranium" UN scene. And it puts Captain America in a position where he might have to stop America from doing something, and not because they're secretly Nazis.
- Isaiah Bradley is great again.
- For those that care, I didn't think it was woke at all? I hate that I'm even using that phrase but whatever. I guess the racial themes got all explored in the TV series so now it's just a political thriller.

The bad:
- Shield physics are all over the place. You just gotta go with it at this point. I've seen worse from the comics tbf but yeah.
- This sounds mean but the actress that plays Ruth Bat-Seraph was distractingly small. It really challenges the believability of "small woman taking on male soldiers" that we get in a lot of these. Google says she's 5'2" but there's just no way - she looked a foot and a half shorter than anyone else in the movie.
- I didn't notice a lot of obvious reshoot scenes but there's some green screen backgrounds toward the end that looked pretty bad.
- Lots of exposition. You kinda had to provide a quick recap to Falcon & Winter Soldier, Eternals and the Incredible Hulk and that's gonna be clunky no matter what.
- The Leader kinda sucked. And that post-credits scene was trash.

The silly?
- Maybe it's because Sam is an Everyman, but I thought it was kinda funny early on where he goes against Sidewinder's henchman and it's just a big guy. Steve Rogers fought Batroc the Leaper, Sam Wilson fought a random big guy.

Overall, I enjoyed it. For me it's right in that Ant-Man 1 and 2, Doctor Strange 2, Thor 4 territory, where your mileage may vary a lot. It's pretty safe, not particularly deep, but I was good with it. I'll revisit once it's on streaming.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought that about Ruth

It was especially notable in the scene with Bucky

Where the heck was China and their navy? You'd think they'd be all over it.
plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose

Probably a case of Marvel not wanting to piss off the Chinese and negatively impact ticket sales.

They are busy buzzing Australian aircraft and cruising the strait between Australia and Papaua New Guinea.

Just got back, and I really liked it. It felt a lot like the Marvel movies from Phase 1 or Phase 2. I liked that it wasn't a fight for the universe against some god like alien. Everything was much more down to Earth. It wasn't a perfect Marvel movie, but I liked it a lot better than most of the other movies they've been putting out post-covid.

We liked it. Better than I expected.

Never thought I'd say this, but it's worth watching Incredible Hulk again before seeing this one.

Looking forward to Thunderbolts.

While I liked BNW alright, learning about what all was changed or reshot does support the feeling many had that it was cobbled or patched together. Here's a recap on Reddit. The general consensus is that the changes were all for the better, but good lord iron this stuff out ahead of time maybe:

In other Marvel news, here's a good article about Charlie Cox and Daredevil. Daredevil Born Again was also redone mid-production, but this article gives me hope that it wasn't a cluster****. BNW had like 5 writers, this had two and then a new showrunner added and edited to get things back on track.

Anyway, I love Charlie Cox now:

Man, Nova has so much potential and I worry we're never gonna see it.

Didn't know there was discussion around a Strange Academy show but the comic is a lot fun, could be really good.

I'll agree with you on Nova, i'm sad to hear they're putting it on hold. But perhaps they felt like they'd already been down that particular character-type road enough times in this phase with Spider man and Miss Marvel and that girl from Dr. Strange 2 ( even though she was extremely lame).

But I can see Strange Academy just being too unknown of a property and characters to take a risk on.

I've never heard of those last two and I've read thousands of comics. I assume they're newer.

Nova is great but I don't know how you'd differentiate him substantially from Captain Marvel. I'd wait until they're ready for some cosmic stuff too.

Strange Academy came out in 2020. Haven't heard of Terror, Inc. I stopped following comics in 2021ish aside from the self contained stories like Supergirl and the Jimmy Olsen one that came out recently.

I think the Sam Alexander version lends itself to a series that would be very different really well, poor kid who finds himself connected to this massive universe. Could easily tie into the Guardians as well.

Yeah, Strange Academy would need a big cast and would be pretty weird, but could be a blast if done well.

I am just so ready for a new take on the X-Men. I'm honestly not really a fan of all these smaller or more recent characters. The X-Men are the pinnacle of comic book characters imo, which if course is influenced by what I was in to as a youth.

I've said it before but I'm excited for (for example) a "Gambit & Rogue" Disney+ series, for example, since the two of them in New Orleans dealing with Gambit's past is way more of a series than a movie. Taking the time to explore X-Men other than Wolverine, Magneto and Xavier.

Way better use of the platform than Echo or whatever the **** D-listers they want to give shows to.

Completely agree. Gambit was always one of my favorites as well. The X-Men are the goats. Really want them to get the same treatment as phase 1-3 MCU.

Exactly. If you cast Sam just right then he could be Marvel's tie to the galaxy outside of Earth, just like the Guardians were previously. Captain Marvel just isn't charasmatic and sympathetic enough of a character to carry that torch, and I say that as someone who doesn't mind Larsen.

I'm just now getting to the Sam Alexander run. It's alright so far, but Richard Rider fully-powered cosmic-events Nova is so good IMO. Some of my favorite comic book material in all of Marvel.

I could see Sam stuff being too Ms Marvel-y to be unique. Maybe part of why they kicked it down the road, like someone else said.

I selfishly want an X-Men Shi'ar movie just so Disney has to put a character named Choad on screen

They are brilliant events and I really like the character. But that name. Still, seeing Dick Rider pounding his enemies right up the ass on the big screen could give some fans quite the thrill.

Which one was in the Annihilation arc? That was a pretty massive event but looking back on it seems a little close to the Thanos MCU Infinity Stones. Maybe I'm way off with that. It's been several years since I read it.
