"Hannibal" star Mads Mikkelsen is in early talks to play one of the villains in Marvel's "Doctor Strange" opposite Benedict Cumberbatch, Variety has learned exclusively. While sources say no offer has been delivered, one is expected shortly. Marvel had no comment on Mikkelsen's involvement.

Tilda Swinton and Chiwetel Ejiofor are on board to co-star. Scott Derrickson is directing the comic book movie from a script by Jon Spaihts. Marvel's Kevin Feige will produce.

Cumberbatch will play Stephen Vincent Strange, a former neurosurgeon who becomes the next Sorcerer Supreme and primary protector of Earth against magical and mystical threats. Marvel Comics artist Steve Ditko created the character in 1963. Swinton will play Strange's mentor, The Ancient One, while Ejiofor will appear as Baron Mordo, who also studies magic under The Ancient One in the comic books, before becoming Doctor Strange's nemesis.

Mikkelsen's exact role remains under wraps, but sources say he will be another antagonist to Cumberbatch's titular sorcerer.

"Doctor Strange" will debut on Nov. 4, 2016 with production set to start late this year.

Marvel has been interested in Mikkelsen for some time, at one point courting him for the villainous Malekith in "Thor: The Dark World," until Mikkelsen won the role of the titular cannibal in NBC's "Hannibal" and was no longer available. The Malekith role eventually went to Christopher Eccleston.

If accepted, this would be Mikkelsen's second high-profile role in the wake of "Hannibal's" cancellation he'll also appear in "Star Wars: Rogue One," which will hit theaters on December 16, 2016. He is repped by UTA and Art Management.

To be honest, I'm surprised Black Widow would choose Stark's side. Assuming Stark's side is pro-registration and government oversight b/c "we know better," there are a couple reasons I thought she'd be with Cap. First, they built a pretty big deal of trust with each other in Cap 2, and she was all about the government agency's lies being out in the open for everyone. Second, her background as revealed in Ultron led me to believe she'd be against any other type of organization that attempts to control.

I tend to agree. I'm sure they'll reason it well for why she sided with Stark.

I'm having a hard time with Black Panther on Iron Man's side.

For one, Black Panther was always a really close fiend to Captain America, more than any of the other Avengers.

Two, in the Civil War comics, Black Panther and Storm had joined the Fantastic Four to replace Reed and Sue as they were off on a second honeymoon. And the FF joined up with Cap's side.

And third, Panther is typically anti-anything-regulatory/sanctimonious. He refused to join the Illuminati because he felt it was too self-righteous. He also has a general distrust of the US government.

I guess I'll need to see the context, and what exactly results in this schism.

Is Black Panther's identity secret or is he like Tony Stark/Iron Man and embraces it?

Yeh you're right I think they joined the team right after Civil War now that I think about it. Buuuut... I'm positive he and Storm were on Cap's side, at least unofficially. I'm pretty sure there was a story about it in a mini series or somesuch.

Yeh I never said anti-govt., obviously, but he considers a lot of American politics to be beneath him, and collected secrets on the U.S. Govt. WHILE he was an Avenger (something that ended up actually pissing off Cap). He seems to be against the typical Western imperialist mind set, and I just can't see him being pro-anything that would be perceived as "unjust".

Let's be honest, this is going to end with everyone siding with Cap against Tony when they realize how ego maniacal he is.

I am just trying to think how they speed all of this into a 2 hour movie, whatever this schism is and truly what motivates each of them.

Well if it's anything like the Comics (no idea if it will be) then that isn't like that. There is no good and bad side. Just 2 differing opinions on what is best for the U.S.

I'm actually a little skeptical of these pics, even if Jeremy Renner tweeted them. First of all, Sharon Carter instead of Scarlet Witch is a little odd. Even if Scarlet Witch is only in the prologue or something, her look and eventual marketability is much higher than that of the neighbor agent from Winter Soldier.

Also, the Black Panther image looks exactly like one that I've seen used before - check the thumbnail for Mr. Sunday Movies' "Everything we know about phase 3" video for an example.

Lastly, the background looks really lame.

But I could be entirely wrong. Perhaps this is run of the mill for concept art. That first pic, with Cap and Iron Man facing off, is old though. Maybe we all knew that already.

I'm a little leery of it as well, for many of those reasons. To be honest, though, what's really setting it apart for me is Falcon's drone. I don't believe we've seen it at all in the MCU thus far; and it's such a minor thing anyway, it's just something he uses sometimes. It merits inclusion in an official picture?

I think it's just some fan art or something that looked cool and got retweeted.

One of the actors made some comments the other day - it is not so much a fight as a disagreement.

So temper your expectations. This is not going to be a battle royale.

I think they throw a lot of new stuff at us. Take IronMans armor, I forget the name Blood something? We haven't seen or heard of it, but they plan on just throwing it at us in the movie.

saw this vid the other day and was blown away. Look at how he gets into a role, even when wearing a ridiculous looking motion capture suit, no actors to play off of, and no set. Dr Strange is in good hands.

What is she doing? She's not punching, she doesn't have a special captain planet ring or super powers...I don't get it.

Look at her wrist. She is wearing some sort of gun bracelet or something. I've only seen it in the cartoons.
