So based on the huge success of Guardians and the clear impact that James Gunn had on that film I'm finding it difficult to believe that Marvel/Disney just couldn't tolerate Edgar Wright's vision. Gunn's prints were, to me, all over that film - from the humor and banter, to the certain close up shots of characters and the opening child Peter scene. Short of adding visual "POW"s and "WHACK"s what could Wright been trying to do with that film that didn't gel?

Not sure, Gunn's definitely had more humor but it still felt like a Marvel film. Wright has a way more signature style that definitely would've stood out from all other Marvel films so far... I do agree with you, but think Wright's might've been just a little too much of a deviance.

But who really knows? Like Alias said, maybe it was more of the story and what aspects he had to include. Ant-Man will probably be like Guardians in that it has to be very calculated since it's another hero that pretty much nobody has ever heard of. Clearly Marvel knew exactly what they were doing though.

I'm also going to hold out hope that they will indeed make a Deadpool film and give it to Wright instead.

That's fine, just let Wright do it. He probably doesn't fit into the MCU they've built anyway. Especially if he's gonna break the 4th wall and kill people left and right.

Wright could team up with Seth Green and do a nutty movie about *guardians spoiler*

Edit: this is a link to an article on playboy.com, so be warned in case your work is all up on your nuts (probably the wrong metaphor to use, since in that case you'd think they'd be all about playboy).

The MCU is really one expensive TV show.

It's a few days old, so apologies if it has been posted, but I feel I'm on top of most of the Marvel threads on here and don't recall seeing it.

quote:
Marvel has stopped working with veteran filmmakers like Kenneth Branagh (Thor), Joe Johnston (Captain America: The First Avenger), Favreau and Wright in favor of directors who are comfortable working in the TV model: Game of Thrones’ Alan Taylor (Thor 2), Community’s Russo brothers (Cap 2), Upright Citizens Brigade’s Reed (Ant-Man) and, of course, Whedon. These are all directors who understand how to execute a vision…and understand their place in the chain of command.

I think that's what I like most about the MCU.. The fact that it all takes place in the same universe and has the ability to overlap. They also have taken their time over these 6 years for us to get to know these "lesser" known characters. As far as the directors go, while I would have loved to see Edgar Wright's Ant-Man, I trust Peyton Reed. The Russo brothers have directed some of my favorite episodes of television so the fact they are sticking around for CA3 makes me even more excited!

To address the idea of characters not staying dead.. I think they are setting us up for some heartbreak in these next few movies. It would make some room on the roster for other heroes to step in.

Off topic kinda, but any word on Dr. Strange? The rumors were hot around Comic Con about Phoenix playing Strange, but I haven't heard anything official yet.

Nothing casting wise, but it coming out that Marvel is going to start jettisoning the origin stories in their upcoming movies. Starting with Strange, they are going to jump right in with Strange as a developed hero.

I've wanted them to do that for years

The thing is, Strange seems to have one of the coolest origin stories from what I have read.

That story has been somewhat misreported. It's not that we won't see his origin, it's that it won't be told in the traditional origin-story narrative we've grown accustomed to. We may see a fully-realized Doctor Strange in the opening scene, for example, but we'll apparently see his origin via flashbacks later in the movie. A good comparison I saw someone make is the original '89 Batman, except maybe with a bit more filler on his background. The first time we see a fully-realized Doctor Strange will likely be the first time the world/other characters see him, but that may happen in the first five minutes as opposed to an hour in.

I like that, in medias res is a form of storytelling that I really dig.

Awesome! I'm all for that format!

Casting wise: I'm still dream casting Jon Hamm as Strange, but would be totally on board with Phoenix.

A lot of interesting Age of Ultron tidbits, including news about a potential Captain Marvel appearance...

I like that they are changing slightly their approach and not doing the straightforward back story in the first movie to introduce each character. At this point the audience has bought into Marvel's movie universe and doesn't need to be convinced that they should invest emotionally in the characters and story. I think the majority of the movie-going audience has bought into this Marvel "world" and is fine with hitting the ground running in each movie going forward.
