Not sure why all the complaints about Acolyte; just finished ep. 5... it's decent.

1-2 were okay
3 was slow but gave backstory
4 picked up
5 was honestly pretty baller ; a trail of Jedi bodies and a baddy with a venom mask and armor that disables lightsabers temporarily ... pretty cool.

The twin angle doesn't do it for me. Mae doesn't seem to have any real motive, but I suspect Sol is about to reveal some naughty background on his part that, from a certain point of view has been spun and hidden from Osha.

Can he act? Just looking like him isnt enough, lol. Its crazy he looks that much like him.

Its even crazier that we have Sebastian Stan, who IS a good actor, that somehow actually has a strong resemblance to Mark Hamill....and they havent cast him

Idk, my two cents - you know there is going to be more and more use of AI/Deepfake technology in entertainment, and Star Wars has always been a leader in special effects, so it seems to be a consistent technical decision for the franchise.

The execution was not great, but I can totally see where they went that direction as a brand. And as quickly as that technology has been progressing, the flaws were more obvious.

I though that dude from Solo did a pretty good job at mimicking Han's mannerisms... it felt believable to me

Not true. Ford and Hamill have already done some crazy scanning work so that they can pull it off in a way that even TC will be blown away.

Have a patient tomorrow that I guess is a pretty big VFX guy. Spent 20 years at Lucasfilm/ILM. Worked on Prequel Trilogy and Mando. Also several Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean, Star Trek, Ready Player One and Marvel/DC movies.

Gonna be hard not to go down the rabbit hole with him

From last night's Puck newsletter...

Quote:

Pixar has its biggest movie ever with Inside Out 2. Marvel's Deadpool & Wolverine is tracking to open next weekend to about $175 million domestica new benchmark for an R-rated film. Disney Animation has Moana 2 in November, and the Disney TV group is about to clean up at Wednesday's Emmy nominations. It's not a full recovery, but this summer, Disney C.E.O. Bob Iger is largely delivering on his pledge to fix creative issues at his content engines.

Then there's Lucasfilm, which, on the film side, is still reeling from last summer's $350 million Indiana Jones debacle and is two years away from a Star Wars follow-up to 2019's high-grossing yet creatively disastrous The Rise of Skywalker. Until The Mandalorian & Grogu hits in 2026, Kathy Kennedy has essentially turned Star Wars into a TV-only franchise. Luminate, however, just released some troubling data on The Acolyte, the Disney+ series from Leslye Headland that concludes tomorrow night. The show debuted decently, but cratered 22 percent the following week and kept falling, recovering only slightly in episode six. Disney will probably spin this with internal metrics, but the issue isn't new: Star Wars shows other than The Mandalorian tend to debut strong and then fade unless a fan favorite character or actor like Hayden Christensen appears. In other words, with the possible exception of Tony Gilroy's smart but little-watched Andor, Kennedy has failed to evolve Star Wars from a pure nostalgia play into a vibrant, relevant franchise. "It's still unclear if another Star Wars series can capture the dedicated and broad audience of The Mandalorian," Luminate's Jimmy Doyle writes in the study. "Despite the data, we might be wise to remember the words of Han Solo: 'Never tell me the odds.'"

When Disney bought Star Wars, I was happy because I knew we would get some new content. But I was somewhat nervous because I thought the "special" would wear off, and not every movie (or TV show) would mean as much due to the volume of content. I did not expect for Lucasfilm to bat about 0.250 on new content being good. But that's where we are, so far.

On one hand, I know why do many people watched Obi-Wan relative to Andor, but on the other hand I would have thought word of mouth would have pushed Andor into better numbers. Especially compared to Boba Fett.

Are those numbers over the lifetime of a show, or what? (I haven't looked at them in great detail yet)
Edit: never mind, I looked closer

The power of Grogu apparent in that first graph

I believe it has since that data is only going after initial viewership.

BoBF was riding the coattails of Mando S2 which came off of one of the most epic episodes we had ever seen on Disney + at that time.....that helps.....

Andor I'm sure has grown in viewership over the years from word of mouth and I expect when you compare intial viewership of Season 1 to Season 2 you'll see Season 2 will be higher.

Andor was a slow burn. I just wonder how much of the SW faithful just couldn't get into it because of that.

I thought it was very well done, but I bet some just couldn't get into it.

Now feels like the time to blow it all up and start over. Finish whatever arc they have planned for Andor and Mando, and then blast back 1000 years. I didn't even finish The Acolyte, and based on some of the thoughts I'm seeing, that was a good call. Hard to believe...

Right now, the best TV/streaming SW content Disney has produced is Andor & a bunch of cartoons.

Coming from someone who's nickname in junior high was "Mr. Star Wars", I had zero interest in The Acolyte based on how it looked to me and negative reports on its quality. Andor was fantastic, The Mandalorian has been mostly fantastic. Ahsoka had some great moments but there were some things that I didn't care for. The Book of Boba Fett, meh. Obi-Wan should have been so much better. So with all that disappointment, I just had no interest in The Acolyte.

I doubt I'll ever watch it. It should be criminal what Disney has done with Star Wars (despite producing Andor, The Mandalorian, Rogue One, and even Solo).

Imagine a world where only the original trilogy remains canon and everything else is tossed

You could give us a new prequel and sequel trilogy that actually kick butt

And take another swing at all the other content that fills in the cracks

A remade prequel trilogy with a new story about how a Republic fell into empire should be brilliant grounds for compelling storytelling.

And a remade sequel trilogy about trying to rebuild a fractured galaxy after a revolution could also be good stuff. (Or, frankly, just swallow your pride and admit Zahn nailed it in the Thrawn trilogy, then give us that)

Maybe after George Lucas eventually dies. Hard to retcon his stuff while he's alive, but it's also increasingly hard to salvage the mess they are making of this far far away galaxy that captured our imaginations long long ago.
Thanks and gig'em

It was such a kick in the dick to read the first sentence of RoS crawl. And then try to convince myself that it was fine.
