Good point. If they can get the Luke element right (meaning they're finally able to overcome the uncanny valley by 90% or so), that movie will be massive. And by all indications, that's why they're apparently shooting this summer, so incredibly early (two years before it hits theaters), so that they have the time in post to bridge that gap.

I thought they did a pretty damn good job of it with Indy, seems like with enough time they should be able to nail Luke.

I think a Mando+Grogu movie, if really good, and brings back Luke in a way that pleases fans, will easily be a massive hit, for all the reasons listed above.

$1B+.
Agreed.

Also…anyone remember Mark Hamill's tweet back in May about announcing a film he's going to be working on??? Did he ever make nice on that and announce it?

It was already getting rumored that he was going to be in the Mando movie and even more people were speculating that he and Disney were trying to get out in front of it so they could announce it on their terms but unless we all missed something they've gone silent on that….

Weren't they starting filming this month?

I overall agree that Mando + Grogu will likely be a box office smash, but to play devil's advocate for a second.

Inside Out 2 is not quite the same as Mando + Grogu. First early summer move for kids, with a known and highly regarded brand is a recipe for success. There is big pent up demand for this type of movie.

Did it blow past expectations? Absolutely. But the ground work was there for this to happen.

Mando + Grogu is first and foremost a TV brand that may give people pause to seeing it on the big screen. And the Star Wars brand as a whole is floundering. (Not getting into if that is just or not, but I think that is a general consensus.) Also, I am not 100% sure Luke is still a big draw after TLJ and ROS. Those movies did a lot to damage his brand. No matter what happens he is going to fail Kylo Ren and do whatever it is he did at the end of TLJ.
I think Luke is still a big draw, but I am much shakier on that belief.

You still have this weird hiccup in the Mandalorian story that the obvious storylibe finale (the Season 2's ending) can't be the actual ending.

So, you some groundwork to believe film goers will be skeptical and it could dampen the opening weekend numbers.

If early buzz for Mando + Grogu is anything, but overwhelmingly positive. I could see a sluggish first weekend and if the reviews are average to above average, I could see it underperforming.

Mando + Grogu is carrying a lot more baggage than Inside Out 2. I don't think the blind faith of it being good is there like it is/was for Inside Out 2 and Deadpool/Wolverine.

These are all good points, but just FYI, I was initially more dispelling the idea that audiences won't show up to theaters/will instead wait for streaming vs. trying to argue that the Mando movie will do Inside Out 2 numbers. Or rather, if audiences don't show up for Mando, it won't be because they're waiting for it on streaming. It'll be because it's a TV brand, there's too much backstory to catch up on, there's Star Wars fatigue, etc.

That said, if the trailers are good enough, it's obvious Luke is integral to the plot, the plot looks relatively contained, the "woke" complaints are two+ years in the rearview, etc, a Mando movie feels ripe for success. Especially with a Memorial Day weekend release, where Star Wars used to rule.

Yeah. I generally agree. I think the wait for streaming is the same argument as wait for it to come to Blockbuster.

If we ever get to same day movie releases at home for a fee it would be interesting to see what happens.

Now, if the next Avengers pops off and Mando+Grogu gets great hype, it could hit the moon.

We have a thread for Acolyte discussion. I posted this here because it's not related to the show as per the thread requirements

It's so frustrating to watch The House of Dragon and compare it to recent Star Wars shows. HoD is entirely immersive. At no point am I thinking "this is a cheap set" "these costumes are too clean" or "someone thought that makeup was a good choice?"

Plus there are like 12 characters who I am deeply invested in after only one season. Andor is the obvious exception, but no other SW show has come even close to being this good

It was never behind schedule.

Palpatine was playing 4D chess by leaving part of it unfinished to fool those pesky rebels.

But yeah. OSHA in space could slow things down.

Considering in ep 1 she was welding around an open flame on the outside of a starship with no visible harness or tether, I'd say the safety regulations are pretty lax.

The Empire definitely cut corners on safety! OSHA was sorely needed!

I think it's just a matter of expectations. HoD is obviously a premium production with the budget to back it up. Supposedly to the tune of $20 million per episode. You can expect the best with that kind of resources. When it comes to Disney+ SW you have to expect that you need to give something up. You can't have quality writing, cinematography, effects, etc when your budget is only *checks notes* $22 million per episode.

If Disney could figure out set design, costumes, and makeup, that would go a long way.

And writing, and direction, and casting, and acting….

So I'm in talks with a foreign client to ghostwrite this really bizarre book about creating virtual hologram/avatars of famous people that people can put Vr goggles on and interact with. By the way this is non-fiction.

They sent me a big PDF explaining the whole thing and there are some images of a VR Pope and Mother Theresa, but we're explaining hologram tech from inside Ben Kenobi's house?
