It kind of makes you wonder if the internet existed when Empire came out, would people be freaking out how it took a **** on the Star Wars storyline, expanded the Force, and introduced a black dude for diversity?

yes, people would have complained because that's what the internet is for.

Don't forget TIE Bombers dropping bombs in space

And the age old "how did they get to Bespin without a working hyperdrive" question

I watched the making of Revenge of the Sith on the DVD special features and it showed George Lucas and his script writing process.

That's when I fully understood you couldn't watch his material from an adult perspective. Suspended disbelief was already going to be a problem if you passed high school general science.

Meh.

Tim Doyle can suck it and if you got an address I'll tell it to his face.

Scratch that, he probably lives in Portland - I'll just call him.
Not the most compelling argument to the contrary. Nor does stereotyping where he lives make you seem especially open minded.

[Sigh]

FINE! I'll be adult about it.

I grew up raised in the Church and I recognize the patterns of selfrighteous pontificating for the glorification of self in that tweet.

I also think Doyle's is guilty of reading what he wants into these films. Then he steps back and says (paraphrasing), "I "get it" and you don't; you're idiots and I'm morally superior."

But notice how he makes sure to mention EVERY disenfranchised cause. As if though he wanted to cover every just cause to earn maximum brownie points. That seems very contrived and disingenuous.

Finally, I really think the guy is just seeing what he wants. In Church I heard that The Marrix was also a metaphor. Neo was Jesus who died and was resurrected to save the world from Satan (the machines) who held the world captive. Morpheus was the herald John the Baptist, the bald guy was Judas, Zion was, well Zion/ Heaven.

Maybe the writers went to Catholic school so the concepts were in their head, but the sequels showed evangelism was not their hidden agenda. It was JUST a movie.

Superman was a metaphor but not a social justice one. As a child the creator's father was shot and murdered and he wanted a a hero who couldn't die (faster than a speeding bullet) and make sure bad guys never got away.

Ask Stan Lee the origin of a lot of his characters and he'll say, "I thought it'd be cool".

So I disagreed.

But "suck it" was easier. I said Portland because I love Portlandia and I can see that guy being in a sketch.

If I offended you personally it wasn't my intent.

Oh yeah, thanks to TCTTS for the tip about the Dune reboot to be directed by Dennis Villanueva.

Star Wars related because Kevin J. Anderson is co-writing the script.

If you need me to tell you who that is then you probably also had a pleasant adolescence experience and had sex with a willing woman before the age of 30.

Just kidding, he wrote several of the first Star Wars novels back in the 90s... and to the best of my recollection they've ALL been willing and many were sober... well, at least financially compensated for their time.

It took you the Revenge of the Sith DVD special features to realize Star Wars isn't rooted in science?

The word 'diversity' did not have the same meaning back in 1980 that it does now.

But Lando was written in as a response to the original Star Wars movie not having a black person in it. He was an example of doing something that a segment of the movie-going public wanted that actually works for the story overall; Lando was a great character who played a significant role in moving the story along, with his long friendship with Han and ultimate betrayal of Han, then redeeming himself taking us into Jedi with his infiltration into Jabba's palace to rescue his old friend. Contrast that to Rose or Admiral Holdo - other than the worst line in the entire series, or that really cool hyperspace jump through Snoke's fleet, what did these characters actually contribute to the series?

Yes, it's art, you take what you want out if it. I get it. I alter the story line of pornos in my head all the time. But this guy took what he wanted and then said,

"This is the way I see it but also the way things really are. And those who don't see it as me are silly peasants. Now wash my balls you filthy peasents - and get the loofah so my perinium will be extra clean."

I'm not a liberal so I won't jump straight to a Nazi comparison, but it does sound like the ideology of a certain National Socialist movement that chased Julie Andrews and the VonTraps into Switzerland.

Either caveat that I haven't finished TLJ (the casino scene sucked away my will to continue), you kind of hit on what I didn't like about Holdo. We have a character in Poe Dameron who we've gotten to know and presumably like. Then we are introduced to Holdo, who we are told is a badass but we've never heard of before, come in and **** all over him. I don't think it's a man/woman thing, because I'd been fine if it had been Leia putting him in his place. We know her and know that she's earned it.

I agree. Leia puts Poe in his place right at the start of the film, and it feels just fine and carries a lot more emotional weight.

I think you guys hit on something that was a sticking point for some of us right after TLJ came out.....the heavy-handed, clumsy way Johnson and the script handled the messages at the heart of the story was extremely amateurish. I honestly think better writers and a better director could have made this same movie (The Last Jedi, I mean) and had waaay less blowback.

This is my thought as well. It was extremely heavy handed with the lessons. A subtle theme or lesson In an action/adventure movie can really add depth. TLJ took it too far and slapped you in the face with it. It was annoying and took away from any redeeming qualities the movie may have otherwise had.
I think the heavy handed, clumsy style is EXACTLY what today's entertainment and news media has chosen as their baseline style of communicating their ideas.

Either they are less attuned to thoughtful debate and communication style needed to effectively make their points because of the education system or because they believe there is no longer a need to hide their moronic world views (having lived in a culture that ignores or ostracizes one half of the political spectrum.) TLJ came across just as over simplistic as our cable news programs (this view GOOD...that view BAD).

And if someone wants earnestly believes that social media should REQUIRE the use of real names it might be a great idea to support that effort in an authentic way by using their real name on Texags...not that I actually care about anyone's particular name/identity. Just be consistent.

Celebration 5-day passes 90% sold out. Apparently they were available through Christmas in 2017.

I wonder if they just allocated a lot fewer this time or if it's selling at much faster. But it seems suspect.
Celebration's twitter account says 5-Day passes now sold out. 60% sold out for Saturday 1-day passes.
In the comments, they said it's the exact same number of passes as last year, just way higher demand.

Well, I for one would like an Ewan McGregor Obi Wan movie.

But George Lucas created just an absolute cluster f__k of that character's story timeline.

In 18 years he ages from a young McGregor to Alec Guinness? What was he doing in that time, drinking copious amounts of Everclear and sniffing lines of coke off the butts of Mos Eisley hookers?

Guess you're right. It does sorta have that Van Horn, Texas vibe.

Drove through there on the way to California.

It has a very... analrapist sort of vibe. And not this kind:
