I've settled in to a comfortable apathy with respect to TLJ. It had high and low points on almost every dimension, and the net result is something that i don't regret watching but have little interest in watching a second time.

But Rian Anderson... eff that guy. He used Star Wars as an experiment, he took the joy out of Luke effing Skywalker, and he seems so smug and superior about the whole thing. Taking all the fascinating loose ends set up in TFA set in the most engaging universe ever created and turning out... that... is not the work of a film maker of the caliber Johnson and his blogger buddies seem to think he is.

The hate for Rose in this thread is starting to border on uncomfortable. I thought she was... ok... and her saving / falling for Finn definitely came across as cheap, but some of you are acting as if she's Jar Jar meets Hilary Clinton. So much faux outrage.

I posted my comment about Rose mainly in jest primarily because the reaction to her has been pretty outspoken. I'm honestly over my dislike for most of what they tried to do in TLJ. It is what it is, and its just a movie.

But is it "faux" outrage if I legitimately didn't like anything about her and actually ended up hating her when she "saved" Finn at the end of the movie?

what is worse, is he has spent SO MUCH TIME after the fact having to explain his decisions.

He is oblivious to the fact that if he is explaining story points after the fact, he failed as a story teller.

he is a smug condescending asshat, that is for sure.

I will be taking a pass on his future trilogy. plenty of other mediocre star wars media to consume out there.

I completely agree with your first point. He shouldn't have to be explaining as much as he is, which almost assuredly points to a failure in storytelling.

That said, a smug, condescending asshat he is not. Johnson is a good dude. He's one of the nicest guys in the business and has treated his critics with nothing but kindness and respect. He's handling this entire situation with more poise than any one of us would and has been more than willing to engage disgruntled fans with grace and understanding. Don't project onto him like this.

Did he get a bit too clever in his storytelling? Sure. Did he challenge our expectations in a way a that didn't sit well with many fans? No doubt. Is he defending his decisions? Absolutely, as he should.

But really, if I'm the one saying "It's just a movie," you know this is getting out of hand. Chill with all this hate and name calling for Johnson, for Rose, for all of it. I ultimately didn't care for what Johnson tried, but at least he cared enough to try something different. At least he came at this passionately, swung for the fences, and then handled the blowback like the gracious pro that he is, which is more than you ask of 99.9% of Hollywood.

I get your defense of him as a good film maker, and I liked TLJ. But you're crazy if you think that argument will resonate with the critics. There's no A for effort in trying really hard to make a good movie. Either you do or you don't. Even Yoda agrees with me on that one.

His post had nothing to with critics. It was about the ridiculous hatred towards a guy for making a movie someone didn't like.

Also, you do realize most critics liked it.

Yes those books are real and have been around since at least 2010.

Personally, I like that Rian is willing to engage on stuff like this

TLJ formally pulled from all Chinese theatres after two weeks.

Bombed pretty hard for China, and did not help grow the franchise there is any way.

This makes absolutely no freakin sense to me. We have the China market to thank for the endless crappy Transformer sequels and the Fast&Furious films continuing ad nauseum. They eat that junk up and boost the box office earnings significantly. Do they just not have an interest in the Star Wars films? I highly doubt they chose not to see it because of negative reviews in the US since they don't follow those for the film series I mentioned before.
Disney's weak ass attempts to reach the China market is why we have the dancing sword solders in Smoke's throne room and the completely unfortunately character Rose...
Yeah, I hate when films have fun action sequences centered around the primary weapon the whole series is built around.

Second viewing of TLJ today, was able to step back and analyze a bit more than the first go round. Still enjoyed it and still don't feel like it's anywhere near as bad as many make it out to be.

- Felt like the casino sequence could've been handled better, though I still like the sidetrack where Finn discovers a lot of gray in what's always been a very black and white world to him. I also like that their crazy against the odds mission failed, unlike the usual million to one Star Wars shot.

- Still totally ok with the Luke/Kylo standoff and how Luke goes out, people feeling like that wasn't explained enough is my most confusing nitpick of TLJ.

- The tolerance for Poe's continuous insubordination was way too high.

- Still not big on SuperLeia, though I like the idea of showing that she does have some latent Force abilities.

- Enjoyed Kylo's turn on Snoke, the language Snoke uses as he thinks he knows what Kylo is thinking was well written.

- Still think it's a really well shot film, and still a big fan of the light speed sequence.

- Needed to lose a handful of porg shots, that was played up a bit too much.

- Would have like to see Phasma used better, but didn't mind how their standoff played out.

- Like that Rey's parents weren't anyone of note (at least as far as we know) as that seems to keep more with what we know of the Jedi.

- Feels like we lost Snoke before really figuring out who he was.

As a whole I'm still positive on it. It could've been better but isn't nearly as terrible as some feel, but to each their own.

My prediction is it happens before the SB or the week after the game. So, prediction is no SB commercial.

Delaying for weeks so as to not get lost amongst the Episode VIII buzz only to spend millions to get lost amongst the Super Bowl buzz makes no sense.

The cost of 2.5 minutes during the Super Bowl alone makes it highly likely we will get a full trailer before then and then a 30 second spot during the game

But nothing about this movie makes sense. Heck, you could tell me the whole movie could fit during a commercial break and I might think it's possible

At this point, I'm expecting them to drop a Kenobi teaser during the SB before we hear anything about Solo.

So, with the apparent direction to take Star Wars in a "new" direction with episodes X-XII, would anyone be at least a little surprised if the 3rd anthology film is Kenobi?
