Go back and look at how I rank the movies. In the middle are these four films:

ROTJ = TFA
TLJ = ROTS

They're ALL solidly in the middle of the StarWars films. It's tough to differentiate which is best though. They all have flaws, but they're all also really okay too!

Anakin / Obi-Wan is up there. And there were three movies of direct setup to that moment. The Emperor was barely even glimpsed until ROTJ.

And again, Ewoks damn near kill the rest of the second half for me.

I'm with TC on this. RotS is plagued by what defines the failure of the prequels: god awful dialogue, silly CGI, Hayden C., etc. Take out the Ewoks, and this isn't even a discussion worth having.

RotJ climax delivers so much more than RotS.

ROTJ - best space battle up until Rogue One at least, and the Vader / Luke / Palps stuff is damn good. Ewoks are better than chasing around Osama Bin La.... I mean, General Grievous.

ROTJ: The best lightsaber fight in the entire sage (yes I'm serious), where Luke's destiny and the fate of the galaxy hang in the balance, where he is on the brink of falling to the dark side, letting Vader have it, taking his arm off...only to look down at his black glove, realize just how close to becoming his father he is, and he turns off the lightsaber, simultaneously beating Vader and the Emperor

Vs.

ROTS: Overchoreographed CGI-fest ending in the dumb high ground exchange. Plus the fight in Palpatine's office where all the Jedi Masters go down like a boxer taking a dive. What a great fight that was.



ROTJ: The best space battle in the sage, with capital ships getting destroyed, dogfights, and fighters racing through the Death Star's superstructure

Vs.

ROTS: Little droids drilling holes in the hull of the Jedi fighters. But the crash was cool I guess?



ROTJ: Heroic actions by Wedge, Lando, Nien Nunb, Ewoks, Ackbar, and a ton of other supporting characters

Vs.

ROTS: Wookiees defending Kashyyyk. I'll give ROTS this one, but we all know this sequence only existed to make sure Chewbacca and Yoda were connected. And Order 66 was more or less well done. But the Utapauans sucked



ROTJ: The end of the hero's journey, passes his greatest test

Vs.

ROTS: The "tragic" fall of this "great hero" who everything great he ever did apparently happened between the movies, so we never saw it except much later in a cartoon series. Plus he turns to the dark side, and instead of becoming the badass monster he was at the end of Rogue One, he kills...some kids and those hapless racist cartoons from the Trade Federation. Menacing!



ROTJ: Fitting sendoff to the characters. Luke has redeemed his father, found his sister, and she's marrying his best friend. Chewie's there! Wedge and Lando survived! Yub Nub!

Vs.

ROTS: Well let's make sure we hurriedly make sure all the characters are in the place they need to be 19 years from now

To be clear, I love ROTJ and think it's neck-and-neck with ROTS, but just slightly below it due to Ewoks.

Epic space battle, epic showdown with Vader and Luke.

However, I find the showdown between Anakin and Obi-Wan almost equally epic. It was not only the duel we'd been waiting for the whole PT, but the showdown we heard so much about even in the OT.

Sure there are cringey moments and some crappy dialogue, but it's not enough to detract from the movie IMO. Whereas Ewoks are a MAJOR part of ROTJ. And they take down the damn Empire. A bunch of teddy bears. With sticks and stones.

Also, I think John Williams' score is just fantastic in ROTS. ROTJ is great too obviously, but there's some really top tier stuff in ROTS. "Padme's Ruminations" and "Anakin's Dark Deeds" are amazing tracks, along with "Battle of the Heroes", obviously.

Though, ROTJ has that great Luke & Leia theme that we only hear once in the whole saga. (Up to that point.)

The minutes between Vader saying "and your sister" and Luke throwing his lightsaber at the emperors feet is the best part of any Star Wars movie.

for those who didn't like TLJ, what has it done for your expectations of the Rian Johnson unrelated SW triology that we're getting?

personally, i really liked TLJ and i'm excited about what he will do knowing he has three films to tell a story.

I feel like I am the only one that doesn't have problem with the Ewoks defeating the ground troops on Endor. There are countless times in history where an under-powered force defeats the seemingly superior force.

I think given his own trilogy, he will do a great job. The way Disney works I'm not convinced he really will get to do all of it. Either way, a trilogy in a different part of the galaxy should be awesome, but it will make less money and have less interest than the movies with ties to the OT. As long as Disney is cool making 400 million a film (like the do with marvel) we will be getting Star Wars for a long time. Hopefully more of them are Avengers good and not Thor II good...

In regards to the potential Kenobi film, what if Disney really throws us for a loops and does a young Kenobi film, based on his line in ESB where he says he joined the Jedi order around the same age as Luke did?

after TLJ, i'm a bit concerned with Disney doing a Kenobi film. I'd rather them stick with a new trilogy (play space)

Overall I was entertained by The Last Jedi... currently trying to plow through the spoiler thread which is daunting to say the least.

Same gripes as everyone, but thought there was a lot of good. Mainly Rey and Kylo, and I think Kylo Ren is the best thing about the new trilogy. Such a fascinating villain.


I will say this though, it seems unfathomable, but is Star Wars the 4th best sci-fi movie of the year? I'd have it behind both Guardians 2 and Ragnarok in the space opera category, and if we're including Blade Runner in the same vein, then I'd have to say it's behind it as well.


Which is probably more of a testament to what a great year for sci-fi it was. Although I realize a lot of people don't consider the Marvel stuff true sci-fi.

Looks like TLJ is not even going to come close to TFA's final domestic gross, and it's doubtful to touch Avatar either.

Took in $21M on Monday, compared to $40M for TFA's first Monday and $31M for its second Monday.

Not to mention well below Rogue One's $32M.

My personal sequence:

Star Wars - changed movies for me. I was 10 and there's no way to replicate that feeling seeing Vadar come through the door the first time. Nothing to change - perfect.

Empire. Again, nothing to change.

R1 - pure nostalgia, but seeing young Leia again. Wow. Nothing real

Jedi - I don't HATE the ewoks, but if they'd had been more like Wookies, it would've been much, much better.

Last Jedi - I really enjoyed this move; reviews on the spoiler thread not withstanding Should've re-wrote/edited to have Leia go out like a commander. Force space walk was worse than the casino planet

TFA - new plot would've been nice

TCW - TV had some tremendous episodes and the movie was really good

Sith - I liked the final battle and the connections to the rest of the story (Obi Wan was really good). Too much CGI and politics

Clones - Yoda coming to the rescue was good; Obi Wan too.

Menace - great seeing them all again and loved Maul - should've realized what we'd get when he went down so early in the trilogy.

Exactly. The Emperor, in his arrogance, fails to consider that an indigenous alien species can be a threat to his carefully laid plan. He sets the trap for the rebels at Endor, and has them captured and defeated. The Ewoks' answer with a perfect ambush.

It's not the idea of it that I have a problem with, it's the execution. Make it Wookiees and I'm totally ok with it.

But, it's Ewoks.

I liked where everyone ended up in the last jedi. I dintend like how rain got them there.

I am looking forward to the story he will tell in his films. I am just hoping he gets a talented editor to help him tell the story well.

Never understood the hate for the Ewoks. Wookies would have been cooler, but we got Ewoks. Plus it's not like they defeated the whole Empire, just a small group defending the shield generator.

I remember in history when a small group of natives, who should have had no chance against a mighty empire, fought and won a whole war: the American colonists.

Revenge of the Sith is the best of the prequels, but it is just the tallest midget in the group.

It's completely ruined and faith or confidence I have. I thought getting rid of Trevorrow saved this franchise....but it appears it is still very much in danger.
