Always made sense to me. Centralized, authoritative governments tend to stifle diverse innovation. The longer the Empire was in power the more you saw lack of innovation and degradation. Also thought Lucas even noted this at one point...i.e. that's the canon explanation.

As much as I hate to admit it, at at (rhymes with hat) is consistent with Imperial use. TIE (twin ion engine) is not said as tee-eye-eee by anyone.

That's a stretch of an analogy.

I always pronounced the scout walker as At-Sat so it rhymed with At-At

debating how you say At-At is even too nerdy for me...

Yea, the rebels had ****ty technology because it was the culmination of scrounging up a bunch of crap they could find without getting caught, so that made sense to me. On the other hand, the Death Star was never seen as "inferior" to me compared to the technology presented in the prequels so even the Empire had advanced technology. Obviously the graphics were better, but that's only because the narrator's eyesight was better in the prequels (younger) than in the originals.

That last sentence is obviously joking, but the rest makes sense.

That was awesome. This is why Star Wars rules so much. No other property has SO MUCH investment from the fans and the creators. We rag on the prequels a lot for a lot of reasons, but that connection and commitment is what was really missing.

That reaction reaction video led me to watch the trailer again and I focused on a few less obvious things that make this awesome.

First what grabs me is how deep every shot of the base on Yavin IV is. How busy. We see all these shots of stuff happening. Escorting Jyn through the hanger is not the center of anyone's attention. Everyone is busy building and repairing things. It makes the whole thing so urgent and a little frantic.

Another things I took away is looking at how ragged the rebel soldiers are. We talk a lot about how this movie is a war movie like Saving Private Ryan. These folks look like they've been down in the mud. Reminds me a bit of the Bastogne episodes of Band of Brothers.

I am REALLY excited for this movie.

If you aren't aware, John Knoll came up with the idea for Rogue One and is getting a story and executive producer credit along with his usual visual effects work. He and his brother also invented something called Photoshop.

Aren't there A-wings in Return of the Jedi? I'm pretty sure one crashes into the bridge of a Star Destroyer
Correct. One crashed into the bridge of the Executor at the Battle of Endor in ROTJ.

IIRC only X-Wings and Y-Wings were present at the Battle of Yavin, and I believe A-Wings were added into the special editions for ESB within the hangar at Hoth Base.
Are you sure you didn't see snow speeders? I watched TESB earlier today but never saw any A-Wings. I know Lucas easily could have digitally inserted them, just did not see any.

Alright, one more thought that I had over the weekend. Before the lightsaber fight in the forest, Kylo says:

"It's just us now. Han Solo can't save you."

When we watched this a few weeks back, my kid spoke out after the above line and said, but Luke Skywalker could save them, dad.

For whatever reason, I was thinking of my thought process when I saw the movie for the first time. The line above stuck out to me in the theater. And then moments after that line, we get the ESB callback with the lightsaber being wedged into the snow. Did any of you think in that moment that perhaps Luke was going to return to save the day in the forest? I kind of did, though it was a passing thought for maybe 2 seconds. I'm so glad that they wrote it the way that they did - it allowed the new cast to shine and really rounded out Rey's power. I would expect most movie franchises would have used that opportunity to return the hero for a cheap thrill moment that feels empty by the second viewing.

I def thought Luke could show up at that point. I don't think it would feel cheap on later viewings, but it probably wouldn't have made much sense.

Secondary thought, it seems like Kylo is talking about himself as much as he is talking about Rey (and Finn) here.

Luke never really was a "come out of nowhere to save the day" kinda guy like Han was.

"It's just us now. Han Solo can't save you."

Is this maybe implying that there was a previous time that she was saved directly and overtly by Han Solo? Why would Kylo say this? He didn't know what relationship Rey and Han had... Or is he talking to a past relationship that Rey doesn't remember?

Maybe Han dropped her off on Jakku in Lukes shuttle?

I think so too. It's Kylo telling Ben it's all over.

And honestly, the moment that the saber hit the snow, I expected it to fly into the metal grasp of Luke

How did Rey escape Kylo the first time on the ship? She used her force powers to get out of the room, but then she somehow ended up on Han's ship, right? Maybe he is referring to that?

I think I see what you are saying, but the order is mixed up. She was with Solo after escaping Jakku (this could be termed her first escape from the FO) and Snoke mentions Solo explicitly to Ren. Then during the mind probe, Kylo refers to her feelings for Solo (fatherly figure). She doesn't end up on the MF post-capture until after the battle with Ren.

I think we are overthinking Kylos comment about Han saving her. He knows or its completely logical to assume they are connected considering Han showed up on Starkiller and its logical to assume he felt him on the planet they attacked where they took Rey.

He killed Han right before that fight and is simply stating the obvious to her.

Question about Ep 7, 8, & 9: I know the scripts weren't all written concurrently, but does Disney or Lucas or whoever's in charge have a general map of where the story is meant to go? Or is that up to the writers of each script?

Nerds are pissed off...

quote:
For those who don't know the nitty gritty details, here is the short version. For years, the Star Wars saga continued outside of the core films, with various books, comics, and video games telling additional stories set in this beloved universe. For true Star Wars obsessives, the "expanded universe" kept this world alive in the years between movies. But it was also assembled without much overarching care and the results were often inconsistent and messy. When Disney bought Lucasfilm and decided to continue the series with The Force Awakens, they decided that their new films would not be constrained by the EU and deleted much of it from the official Star Wars continuity. They then assembled the Lucasfilm Story Group, which would oversee the new Star Wars canon. The old EU stories would live on and remain in print, rebranded as "legends."

Naturally, some fans weren't happy about this. And then some of them raised almost $5,000 to pay for this billboard, which now sits in San Francisco, California at the corner of Steiner and Lombard.

quote:
The Expanded Universe Billboard Project, put together by some of the more outspoken members of the Star Wars fan community, has been done with nothing but love for what is now known as the Legends Universe. It is an entirely fan funded and created effort to speak directly to those who have the power to do what we, the fans and consumers, want. It is for this reason that we have pooled our resources, both financial and creative, to bring Lucasfilm this message of passion and appreciation.

quote:
As far as inherently insane requests from passionate fans go, it's reasonable. It's never going to happen because Disney is too smart to muddy the waters of the massively popular and lucrative multimedia franchise it controls with an iron fist, but hey, at least they're asking politely.

That's pretty pathetic. Why not enjoy it for what it is - well written fan fiction? Who gives a crap if it's canon or not?

I think they have a roadmap. But, Abrams assisted Rian Johnson on the story for Episode VIII, and Johnson is providing a story for episode IX. I think Colin Trevorrow is doing the actual screeplay with someone else (forgetting right now). So, there is definite continuity, and like I said, a general roadmap and collaboration with the Lucasfilm story group.
