I'm still sticking to my claim. Could it be the best movie of the year? Maybe

Will it be better than TDK? NOPE.

So excited about Man Of Steel. Have been reading and hearing great things despite the silly embargo. Warners will be rolling in money.

terriwoods ‏@terriwoodschels
Know various people who have dm'd me stating it is fantastic. Really wanting to break that embargo.

terriwoods ‏@terriwoodschels
One dm I got for MOS stated that it made him weep it was that great. He wishes he could write about it and beak this embargo.

Man Of Steel is unlike any Superman film you’ve ever seen. Initial thoughts: Looked amazing, action was stunning, Cavill & cast excellent.

More from that Daniel Dalton guy...

quote:
More of an origin story of Kal-El than Clark Kent - if that makes sense - from the opening scenes on Krypton to the arrival of General Zod and the threatened genocide of humanity, Man of Steel is about what it means to be human - how Kal-El finally accepts he is Clark Kent, and how human kind accept Superman as one of our own.

It’s a film about being an outsider - being different, and accepting yourself whether others do or not.

It’s a film about fathers and sons, and - with more than a few sly biblical references - it’s a film about faith. Not necessarily religious faith, but faith in others. Faith in yourself.

Negatives would be the lack of character development in anyone other than Kal/Clark - Martha Kent and Lois Lane both suffer from underwriting, and Lois Lane especially is denied the chance to develop beyond two strong scenes, becoming a damsel in distress/love interest by film’s end.

Not quite at the same level as Batman Begins, but gives a stronger platform for sequel development than Superman Returns did.

I didn’t intend to write so much, but it’s been on my mind all day. I look forward to chatting about it with you all when it’s out in cinemas!

There's a reason why they told us not to tweet about the movie we just saw: IT'S TERRIBLE!!!

Jenn Murphy ‏@jambot0110
Also it definitely fails the Bechdel Test. Seriously can big budget movies create a decent role for a woman? It's getting pretty ridiculous.

I realize this can be a legitimate complaint, but it's obvious she didn't like the movie BECAUSE it doesn't have "a decent role for a woman." Not because it's actually a bad movie. But, whatever. She's vegan (per her Twitter profile), and vegans can't be trusted anyway.

I need to go into this movie level headed. TDKR came in with such high expectations that when it was just good and not great, I think I felt it was worse than it probably was. It was the weakest of the three movies and not the ending of the trilogy that I'd hoped for, but it was still a very good movie. I'm afraid that if this just ends up being good but not great, people are going to dump on it for being worse than it is.

For comic book fans, it's just going to come down to which character you like better. I know Batman fans that would NEVER admit that MOS could possibly be better than Batman Begins or TDK.

And by the way Jenn Murphy, this isn't a movie about a woman it's about Superman. Jeez.

Exactly. I don't mean to jump all over the first person to dislike the movie - and like I said, in the broad scheme of things, her complaint is valid - but in this specific instance it seems pretty ridiculous. It's like complaining that one of the bridesmaids in Bridesmaids wasn't a man. Or that the male cop love interest in the purposefully-all-female cast was underdeveloped. Who cares? It's not he point. Not every movie needs to feature equality for all, especially one whose sole purpose is for a super-being to ultimately decide if he's a MAN (of Steel) or not.

And AgMarauder04 - I laughed.

I'm a Superman fan and I absolutely loved TDK. No one comic book movie comes close to that one. I'm hopeful MOS can be in the same room, and based upon the reports it might be, but we will have to wait and see.

I don't think Heath Ledger's Joker will ever be topped though.

Edit - Meant TDK

I'm going to try one last time tonight to see a Man of Steel trailer on the big screen. I struck out with both Iron Man and The Great Gatsby.

Which is the least bad movie, Fast and Furious or Hangover? Or would a MOS trailer play before Star Trek? And yes, I know it's weird to see a movie based on the trailers that are playing.
TCTTS
How long do you want to ignore this user?
And yeah, I'm totally fine with both The Dark Knight and Man of Steel potentially sharing the "best ever" moniker. They may end up on the top of the mountain together, and like you guys said, it'll come down to individual preference of character. That could be pretty cool, and I guess how it's always been, in a way. No matter how good MoS is though, it's gonna be really, really tough not giving a slight edge to TDK. That movie captured lightning in a bottle in a way we may not see for quite a while. But it sounds like MoS is definitely a worthy challenger...

I think TDK and Iron Man are 1a and 1b.
TCTTS
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Aggies76 - I saw the three-minute trailer before Star Trek (in IMAX 3D). And then saw the latest two-minute trailer before Fast & Furious 6 (and I'll guarantee it's with Hangover as well). FF6 is dumb as hell, but kind of fun, and I seem to be one of the few who halfway enjoyed H3. Just depends on which you're in the mood for, I guess. Decent comedy or stupid action.

Iron Man is great, and I'd probably agree that it's the second best superhero movie to-date (close call with Batman Begins and maybe a couple others, IMO), but there's no way it's even in the same vicinity as TDK. TDK is transcendent. It's on another level.

in my opinion, TDK was a great movie, without any "superhero" classification needed. i can't say i've seen any comic book movie that comes close.

i honestly liked iron man 3 the best of three, btw.

Exactly. No other superhero movie can claim that in the way TDK does.

Have to agree with yall. I popped TDK into the bluray the other night and was still amazed.

The first bank scene takes on a whole different level when you've seen the it already because you know who is who and the whole movie is just shot phenomenally well.

I just sort of realized, all of a sudden... OMG less than TWO WEEKS! Staring at the date on my calendar. Have no idea if there will be a run on tickets in Dubai or not, but I don't think I can buy them early, so we'll just cross our fingers.

First review - of sorts - from Comic Book Movie. Spoiler-free...

http://www.comicbookmovie.com/superman_movies/news/?a=80625

quote:
• I think the one word I would use to describe this film (as cliche and overly used as it is) would be EPIC. The scope of this is unlike anything we have seen in a CBM. The amount of destruction in this movie is jaw-dropping.

• Those worried about action... Should not be. That is all I'll say about that.

• As far as the story goes I would say this is one of the most focused stories I've seen in some time. The writers/filmmaker knew exactly the story they wanted to tell... and unapologetically told it. This could be viewed as a negative by many due to certain characters not being fully fleshed out, although I LOVED it. Very refreshing to not have a convoluted plot.

• Zod is now the 2nd best villain in CBM history (No one can beat ledger's performance in my eyes). Michael Shannon is nothing short of sensational.

• Cavill... Is... SUPERMAN. Best interpretation we've seen... Including the animated versions. I was blown away at how this man encompassed everything we've ever loved about superman. You could tell how into this role he was. I know many were worried when the didn't show a lot of dialogue in the trailers... But you will be glad they didn't.... On that note...

• THEY HAVE SHOWN NOTHING IN THE TRAILERS. Literally all the best moments have not been shown.

• The CGI is some of (if not THE) best I've ever seen. Zack Snyder has such a way with special effects and even though it's so over the top... You believe you're actually witnessing these things occur... Which is a huge testament to the world they have created.

• Keep your eyes (and ears) peeled... There are in fact references to the DCU (however minor they may be)

NOW FOR MY NEGATIVES (though this is nitpicking)

• Amy Adams didn't fully sell me on Lois. Though it's not necessarily her fault. She surprisingly didn't have a ton of screen time. Hopefully she will be more developed in the sequel.

•....... Well... I guess that was my only negative.

I will be writing a full review as soon as I am able and dive into the million things I loved about this movie. Is it the greatest CMB of all time? If it's not... It's pretty damn close. Snyder should be embraced by fanboys across the globe when this hits. I know I can't wait to see it again and again.

From the comments section...

quote:
I will say it's a very fresh approach. Definitely not a standard CBM. Tone wise I'd say it's somewhere inbetween the "grounded" Nolan movies and the fantastic cinematic spectacle that was the Avengers.

quote:
The fact of the matter is Lois is a huge part of Superman's story and I felt it was a slight negative that she wasn't incorporated more.

As far as the characters go I think I spoke wrong when I said Lois is underdeveloped. The fact of the matter is this is 110% a story about Superman. The rest of the characters add to the story but never are the focus.

quote:
I will say this... If you liked BB and TDK you will LOVE this. There has been so much emphasis on Nolan's Batman being in a seperate universe but to be honest the feel of this film feels very in line with those movies. I will say this IN MY OPINION this is just as quality of a movie as the Nolan movies.

quote:
It is inspirational. Honesty it sounds so corny but I teared up a few times. It has this very strong undertone of hope. Some of the scenes mixed with Hans Zimmers score gave me chills (that's an understatement).

Zimmers score could not have been more perfect. Better than his work on TDK trilogy in my opinion.

quote:
I don't want to give anything away but you will not be disappointed with how Krypton is portrayed.

quote:
I would say this is definitely a masterpiece. Snyder clearly respects the character and mythos very much and you can feel it throughout the movie.

Also, here's a fantastic, 13-minute behind-the-scenes featurette with bits and pieces of those interviews weaved in. The movie footage used is mostly stuff that's been shown before, save for two or three extended looks at scenes, with actual conversational dialogue (something we haven't heard much of in general). So don't watch if you don't want to see that kind of stuff, otherwise, it's a really great peak at the production...

Wow, in that link that TCTTS just posted, you get a taste of what Cavill is bringing to this role. Starting at about 3:12 in a great scene you see him confronting two Kryptonians and there's a mixture of determination and fear in his eyes. It's like he's trying to figure it out as he goes. I don't think we've ever seen that in a Superman before.

LOVED that. Can't wait to see that scene in context. Having an unsure, figuring-it-out-as-he-goes Superman will hopefully go a LONG way to make the character more sympathetic and relatable.
