Fartyget sjönk 25 juli 1956 i Atlanten utanför Nantucket efter en kollision med Svenska Amerika Liniens M/S Stockholm. 56 personer omkom och värdefull konst gick förlorad!!!

M/S Stockholm var namnet på flera olika passagerarfartyg inom Svenska Amerika Linien (SAL). Det sista av dessa fartyg byggdes på Götaverken 1948. Båtens namn blev välkänt sedan det på natten den 25 juli 1956 kolliderat med den italienska atlantångaren S/S Andrea Doria, som sjönk och 51 passagerare och 5 besättningsmän omkom!!!

Stockholm såldes till DDR och döptes om till Völkerfreundschaft!!!

Efter några år som flyktingförläggning i England såldes fartyget 1992 till Italien och genomgick en omfattande renovering. Efter 57 år (2005) seglar Stockholm fortfarande som kryssningsfartyg under namnet Athena!!!
