You always hear about the perils of a large portion of lottery winners; I don't buy it. The sample set is not your average person. It is a lower class person who likely has past addictions and demons, and has family and friends are similar to him, and with the windfall these problems come out of the closet.
I think you're dead on, except for the part I bolded. Unfortunately, I bet the sample set is absolutely reflective of the "average person", as sad as that may be.
Yes poor wording on my part. The winners are absolutely the average American. I meant not the average texagger. A college educated person with a career.

Some states you have to disclose who wins, others you don't. And some may have restrictions in place preventing an LLC or a trust to claim the prize, forcing the purchaser to claim it. This all varies by state I'm sure. So do the taxes of course.
I'm not sure which would result in the more spectacular train wreck, an "average American" winning, or an average TexAgser winning. :-)

Dear Lord this please.

I can already picture all the threads now....

  • I just bought Scimi
  • How many Yeti Cups does 450 mill buy
  • I just bought out Sumlin's contract and have paid Saban to come coach
  • I just bought TexAgs now all the hot GB girls can post noodz
  • Oh crap there are no hot GB girls
  • Tonight I'm gonna party like I'm Johnny Football

And lets not forget...

  • I just ran out of money....Please donate at GoFundMe

Not sure if you can setup a blind trust in Texas and claim the prize that way. If not and you won the lottery, it'd be in your best interest to just disappear for a good year and let things settle down. Your life would certainly be hell, and it would suck for your closest family members as well (parents, siblings, etc).

Take your mom to Taco Bell, and never call her back.

I think I would most likely take 1-2 years just to travel around the world regardless. But I agree, the immediate aftermath when everyone finds out would be a **** show

You could just hire an attorney, give him limited power to manage the affairs and movement of cash, temporarily hire a security detail, and get out of dodge for a while

Just had a flashback to the Adams Family Movie and Gomez going down deep under the castle to get the money for the "expenses"

Bingo. My ass would be in a hotel room under a false name somewhere where nobody knows me until I could get everything squared away the way I want it.

I'd go to the most isolated place in tbe Rockies or the blue ridge and build a decent house, nothing too extravagant. I'd have a helo pad and air strip big enough for netjets to land on.

I'd travel to all sorts of sporting events and might buy an apartment in Manhattan just to flip it in ten years.

Immediately photograph front and back, don't sign and drop into ziploc bag and go right into firesafe. Lawyer up and claim via newly formed LLC within the week and no one knows I have it. Make minor lifestyle changes year by year for myself/parents/brother and start treating my closest friends to hunting trips we go on anyways of increasing fancypantsness as if I were generally excelling in the career I'm already knee deep in.

Honestly, not much would change except the partying balls I currently do on weekends would go exponentially more ridiculous, but not outside the realm of possibility where people would straight ask for money. Everything else (parents house, cars, etc.) could be upgraded within reason on the down-low. No one needs a 5MM house and Bugatti, and my kid wouldn't have to worry about college.

Of course, I'd have to be dumb enough to go buy a lotto ticket to win said money.

I wouldn't say it's dumb to play. Just a gamble. I have a coworker going negative nancy on me "you're not gonna win. Do you know what the chances of you winning are?" I know I'm not gonna win, but you can win if you can't play.

Also, all of Y'all convinced me to take the lump sum if I were to win, so thanks

so is anyone here actually buying a ticket?

I have one ticket. Bought it yesterday when I filled up with gas and had to go inside to take a leak. Figure what the hell, it's only a couple of bucks.

I do occasionally. I figure I'm going to blow the cash in my wallet on something stupid anyway. Might as well be a lottery ticket instead of a coke or candy bar at the office.

I know it sounds crazy but I play from time to time. When I am having a string of bad luck I like to buy a ticket. I figure maybe some of the bad luck will be used on me not winning. I know I'm not going to win. Maybe losing on that ticket will help turn my luck around. If I lose then I'm only out a buck. If I win even a dollar then that is just a bonus. Silly I know but I don't really care.

Yeahtoast says he would not change much if he took home over 200mm cash?

Sounds like a cool dude to party with.

That amount of money would absolutely completely change my life for the better. Houses, boats and toys. Real estate and investments to keep continual cash flow (like multi-family housing and commercial warehouse rentals, etc.)
Lots and lots of travel with wife and kids. Not 'work' again (what I did with my time would not feel like work)
And still have plenty left over to gift to immediate family, friends, and a few generations below me.

If you continue to lead a lifestyle to where no one has a clue you came into that kind of money, then you're doing something wrong. I'm pretty sure my family/friends would notice we're traveling 6-10 weeks a year. And I had a second or third residence. And I quit my job and opened a brewpub.

$5 million lottery, ok yeh, not any huge changes, just a great (and early) retirement, and nest egg for kids and siblings maybe.

But $200 million?

I used my Christmas scratchoff gift winnings to buy one.

I seem to remember that you could turn in your winning ticket to the lottery commission without actually claiming the prize (giving you time to set things up legally). If that is true, I'd want to do that. I think that I might be paralyzed with fear that I might lose or accidentally destroy the ticket.

In texas, it is public information who wins. So you can't claim it annonymously.

You can wait to set up trusts, lawyers, etc. before claiming it. There is a group out there that does this sort of thing for you.

Set up accounts
Have someone live in your house for about a month while you leave
Hides all phone numbers of you and checks mail
Writes wills/PoA/etc.

Essentially you show up to the lotto office, take a photo or two, then get back in a limo to take you to an airport to fly you out for a while.

Then you go back underground.

If I win that $500 million I'll personally put up $100 million of it for a lazy river around Kyle Field.

Poopslap bet on it.

My company just bought 35 tickets between 14 people. Then they spent the next 3 hours setting up how splits go, how much each will get, a percentage that goes to an equal ownership investment fund, and then how they are going to elect a general partner to run it. Included was calls to an attorney signing paperwork on the splits and language to make sure no one gets screwed over. Best $5 I ever put into a pot watching that go on

Yup. And within those negotiations there was side negotiate from some of the older folk who didn't want to put part of their money in an investment count getting some of the younger crowd signing buyout agreements. It was really bizarre

That is stupid. A time traveler would already know the winning numbers and would have kept that information along with a winning ticket to themselves.

I think the 2 best things I would do is make a $1mm donation to Obama's presidential library in the name of the TA politics board and another to planned parenthood 8n the name of the r&please board.
