99 don't beat yourself up. I know this is difficult but you actually did the right thing asking IF he played golf. That was my point. Find that out first before just assuming he's a golfer and asking how he approaches playing hole #12 at Torrey Pines. See it's easy. It's not about offending someone. It's just accepted social practice and quite frankly common sense. Sounds like you have both.

I agree with OP. It's not good social behavior to assume someone is looking for a church. I don't randomly ask people if they have found a good mosque, or a good scout troop, or a good bible study group.
Reasonable social interaction would be to first find out if a person is religious then ask about their Church. Don't just jump in with the assumption that they are religious and start asking them if they have found a good "church home". Its seem a little weasely and passive aggressive (whether it was intended that way or not).
But because we all seem to want to share our ever move on social media; good manners are flying out the window these days.
Just like you don't ask a man if he's a Texan. If he is, he'll let you know and if he isn't, well, you don't want to embarrass him.

It'd probably be less awkward if you'd just be honest with them, so she doesn't think that she is asking you a question that she believes is relevant to you.

Want to make it really awkward? Respond with "why on Earth would you ask me such a personal question?" That's also good for when are you getting married and are you planning on having (more) children.
The point here is that it's a harmless question. There are people on these boards who get offended by the most asinine things. Don't be one of those people. Someone asks you a question, roll with it. Don't get your panties in a wad.

I bailed on the whole Christian thing 25 some odd years ago and have never felt awkward when someone mistakenly assumed I was Christian. Seems like a silly thing to dwell on.

I move a lot but finding a church is one of the first things we do. Worshiping God brings joy, fellowship with others is great, and I find opportunities to serve others. Why wouldn't I want others to have the same joy?
So what would you tell gays if they tried convincing you to join them, because they want you to feel the same joy they have?
