I hope people don't confuse the Westboro people with being true Christians. Some of them may be personally saved, but they don't have the grace or kindess that true Christians try to have. Yes, all people (including Christians) have their vices, but those of Westboro are a different breed.

As I said before, you want to design things so you DON'T get to that point. A lot of times, your job, if a fire breaks out and you cannot contain it or remove it (think of a burning hand truck; push it into a lake or something), is to move everything out of the path. With explosives, you are required to keep only X amount in a bunker/magazine (actual name, IIRC). You have to have the magazine Y feet/yards/miles away from ANYTHING depending on how much you store. AN shouldn't fall into that category (it might, would have to look at the federal rules for this at home).

You can do things to prevent the distance requirements, but that would mean burying the magazine, putting up hills, blast walls, etc. or reducing the quantity of materials.



If you go back a while ago, there was a fertilizer place in Bryan that caught fire. They essentially let it burn out, since it was mostly AN. Since there was no water poured on it (IIRC), it just burned. Sucks and you lose material, but that is the safest method. IF (and this is a big if) oxidizers got onto the AN, THAT is why/how it went boom instead of burning (the water onto AN, making it NO2, which reacts with AN and goes boom).


As stated before, if they have a rail car and a fire breaks out (or there was a fire nearby from a grass field or whatever), the fire fighters try to fight it like a normal larger industrial fire (if they have the training). If they didn't have training, but decided to fight it none-the-less, that could have lead to things escalating quickly.



I know for a fact the official MSDS firefighting method for thermite is "quarantine the area, "rope" the area off with sand and allow to burn". Unless you could dump MASSIVE, relative to the amount burning, amounts of water, thermite is just going to burn and be done. Stop other things from catching fire as well.

and i assume you wouldn't put stuff like AN at all near other flammable materials (let alone within the flammable materials assumed fire circle)

But are the Westboro nutcases going to go to the funeral in a car or a pickup truck? Surely one must be better than the other.

Apparently there was around 50,000 lbs of AN in the dry barn, so there's no way they would have been able to get enough water on it to neutralize it. In that case, no water would have been better, as Dr pointed out.

SuperDave, would you be able to distinguish between where flammables would be stored from an aerial?

I'm looking at the google map aerial and trying to find what was stored where.

In the 3rd pic, the red line points at some vertical white tanks. The large grey building to the northwest is the ammonium nitrate dry barn. The small horizontal tanks directly to the south of the barn are the anhydrous tanks.

I have quite a few friends in west. It's very scary what happened. Lots of pics on my facebook feed. May go out there tomorrow after work. Here's my friends car.

Honestly, I'm not sure BS. My knowledge of the situation is coming from my good friend and coworker. He's from West and has intimate knowledge of the facility and surrounding area.

I don't know anything about design of these facilities.
