Rock, how can I put on muscle if I stop working out? I think we'd all love that problem! Don't work out and yet still have to try to not add muscle

If you're trying to gain weight don't do much cardio at all, but concentrate extensively on lifting. Make sure you do legs at least one day a week.

Also eat at least 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight (though this is something that everyone should do no matter if they are gaining or losing). Keep starchy carbs low, fruits and vegetables high, fats (good fats like olive oil and meat fats) decently high and you should be good.

I would definitely recommend you look around the bodybuilding.com articles for even better nutrition advice.

What I meant was don't spend a year building muscle by lifting if you aren't going to continue to lift for the rest of your life.

That muscle you built up for that year will turn into nasty fat the day you put down the weights.

So should I just add on those 20 lbs of fat and then lift weights again afterwards? That would put me closer to your target range although still not in it probably. Should I do cardio to at least stay in shape? Will the weight still come on if I do that? I assume it would if it's "natural".

That would be ideal, keep working cardio and tabata exercise to build lean mass while putting on weight, and once you get to around the 150 lb range get into a gradual program like Starting Strength.

I just recommended this program(from a body building site) for a cadet who was below weight standards that you might be able to use once you get above the 150 range:

quote:
You will do 3 work outs per week on non consecutive days. The first work out is your heavy work out. The second work out is your medium work out, use 10% less weight for your work sets. The final work out for the week is your lite work out, use 20% less weight.

Do a lite warm up with 1/4 of your work sets weight. Do a medium warm up with 1/2 of your work sets weight. Do 2 work sets with the same weight. Choose a starting weight and start light.

These are the seven exercises you will be starting with.

Squats
Bench Presses
Bent-Over Rows
Overhead Barbell Presses
Stiff-Legged Deadlifts
Barbell Curls
Calf Raises

You will be running this program on a five week cycle as follows:
The first week do all 4 sets for 8 reps.
The second week do all 4 sets for 9 reps.
The third week do all 4 sets for 10 reps.
The fourth week do all 4 sets for 11 reps.
The fifth week do all 4 sets for 12 reps.

If you got all of the required reps on the fifth week then increase the weight by 10% and
repeat the cycle. If you didn't get all of the reps on the fifth week then repeat the cycle with the same weight. You shouldn't need more than one minute rest between the warm up sets and you shouldn't need more than one minute thirty seconds between the work sets.
Do some cardio and abs work on non weight training days.

absolutely false! Muscles and fats are made up of very different types of cells that have completely different functions. You get fat by not adjusting your caloric intake when you stop.

Rock, thanks for the clarification

Vander, your advice seems solid and what my instincts tell me, but dublin mentioned about being 13-18% body fat before lifting, which I'm not close to right now.

Dublin, could you clarify if I really should stop lifting? Why must I be in this range? Is it bad for my body?

It takes me a little less than a week to drink a gallon of whole milk.
That is a very long video.

I want to know what a dude looks like if he is fairly taller than me, but almost weighs the same amount and can lift 300 pounds.

??

Uh yeah, no that's not how the human body works.

Well that's how my body works just from personal experience.

I put down the weights one day and all my muscles got soft and weren't there a few months later and I had some fat where they used to be.

Dublin, sounds terrific. Thanks for the help. That workout looks good. Should help with my lower body.

As for the rest of you, WAY too many contradictions. I don't know who is right and who is wrong. Just glad I've got a good head start when it comes to lifting thanks to my mind

If you start lifting before you get more weight on your frame you can do long-term skeletal and joint damage. When I put my weight on I kayaked ran every day until I hit around 150, and at that point I got the okay from the trainer to work hard lifts.

Also, if you're at 8% body fat, you're going to have to have an insanely high-calorie diet to sustain any prolonged workout program. Getting your body-fat up means you can push your body further without getting into a dangerously low body-fat range that can lead to serious illness and muscular atrophy.

Ouch. Were you previously pretty skinny? Any moderate increase in body fat percentage is going to make you feel lethargic if it isn't deliberate.

As mentioned above, the fat comes from not adjusting your diet. Your muscles will obviously atrophy if you don't lift, but they will not "turn into fat".

It is impossible for both of these things to be true, even if you're a heterozygote carrier.

That isn't what my doctor said though Ryan.

I think I'll take a trained PhD over a broscientist internet forum guy.

Can't believe a thread about being ripped is 5 pages in without a diehard post followed by the olds bashing him. He's just posted on the height/weight thread so maybe it won't be much longer.

Rock, do a simple google search. Fat does not turn into muscle, and muscle does not turn into fat. Or better yet, understand the composition of muscles vs fats and you will understand why it is ridiculous.

Looks like ODB did the work for you. You should thank him.

Allstar, I'm not an attention hoar, I don't fish for compliments. I'm passionate about health and fitness. I have a good body, but I'm not a meat head, nor am I the ****** who dates himself. I actually hate them just as much as the olds, but they stereotype.

AgAllStar I forgot to tell you this. Since you are on the lightweight side you may be tempted by things such as anabolic steroids like creatine, however do not give into these easy routes. They are only cheating you and hurting your body in the long run.
