* The name comes from a Maasai phrase which translates to "the place of cool waters". However, it is popularly known as the "Green City in the Sun."
* The area was an essentially uninhabited swamp until a supply depot of the Uganda Railway was built in 1899, which soon became the railway's headquarters.
* Pressure exerted from the locals onto the British resulted in it's countries independence in 1963, with this city as the capital of the new republic.
